Wifi remotes instead of RF

I am installing a new AV system, and I think that IR is a failed technology as used to control these systems. I love my logitech, but a one-way network is never really going to work properly.

As a tech guy, I would love to see a universal remote based on an iphone or droid that can communicate with a controller that connects through serial or ethernet to the main components (LCD, AV receiver, Sonos, Blu-ray, etc). It would know the status of each device and be able to accurately switch.

Are there any core components that are really controllable by Wifi at this time. I am not interested in using Wifi to access songs, but as a protocol for controlling the actual device.

Thanks in advance!

Check out iRule (iruleathome.com), and you'll also find him hanging out on the forum. There are other iPod/iPhone-based control systems, and probably a lot more to come later this year...

RF doesn't have to be a one-way system - I think you meant IR... But you've run into the same problem as just about everyone on this forum. Solving it is difficult because it involves so many companies, and none of them directly profit from the work it would take. And as with all tech-related "industry standards", there's a trail of failures for every topic, and only a few really good successes (WiFi being one).

netremote from promixis. It works on any windows device (win7,winCE, win mobile) and uses wifi. You make all the buttons and everything and it'll connect to girder and sendout IR commands through a USB-UIRT. Also it's 2way and has mediabridge that connects to your music and you can pick songs on the device and play them on the computer. Its really simple to switch zones also so you can have a HTPC then easily switch to your office computer and play from there.

I have it on both mine and my girlfriends windows mobile phones which'll auto connect to wifi when we come home. We just open the program, select a song and it'll turn on my stereo, select correct source and play the music. Also we bought an older windows mobile smartphone to keep at the house that controls everything. It doesn't work with winCE6.0 yet but they're working on it next month. Once that's fixed I plan on buying a SmartQ7 http://bestofferbuy.com/SmartDevices...campaign=gbase and using it for my main remote.

Netremote does have a learning curve to program everything but they have samples and you can design and test straight from your laptop or pc then copy the file to your device.
