Help positioning speakers in a Magnepan home theater

Hello,

After moving into a new house and (finally) getting an HD TV, it was inevitable that the old home theater had to be upgraded. So out go the Pioneer VSX-26 receiver, Ryan mains, Jamo center and Polk surrounds. I've ordered an Onkyo PR-SC5507P and an Outlaw 7700 (200 W/ch). What I'd really like is a 7.1 setup using Magnepan 1.7 mains, CC3 center and MC1 surrounds (or MMG-W). Probably getting two Hsu ULS-15 subwoofers.

As you can see from the photo, the room is not exactly ideal. Lots of nooks and crannies and a big opening on one side to a dinning room. TV and mains are shifted off center to avoid a door. Putting the TV under the window is not an option.

I could use help in positioning the surrounds. I've enclose photos and a diagram. The photos are as if you were in the center of the room, turning around and looking at each wall. The ideal placement for one (or more) pair of side surrounds (in blue) would be on the soffet 8 feet off the ground. The MC1 would be angled down toward the listener. I have no idea how well this would work. Probably OK in the forward firing direction, but you would get reflections off the cathedral ceilings... which may be great or terrible. But I like the idea of them way out of the way and moving them around easily.

If not there, then I'd have to attach them to a bookcase and to a cabinet (in red), so positions are limited. Freestanding is an option, but they would get in the way.

The back surrounds (in yellow) would be off the ground to the left and right of the smaller windows, angled in (?) toward the listening area. I'll probably forego the back surrounds at first, just use the Polks before springing for the maggies.

Should I abandon the idea of using a Maggie HT setup for this room? Hate to do it. I may have to anyway if the partner freaks at two 2001 Black Monoliths in the den!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

mark

Magnepan includes directions for ceiling mounting and angling down with the MC1s so it should work. I'd budget for some room treatment to help even out the response.

If it helps, there are directions online for building stands for the MC1s -- that's what I did, as I haven't quite decided where I really want them, and didn't want more holes in my (floating) walls.
