Another problem I have with the modern martial arts flicks are the heavy and obvious use of wire work. Donnie Yen is a fine martial artist and probably one of the few stars left over from the old days of Hong Kong cinema where actors knew a bit of martial arts or more then a bit.

These days it is any popular actor/singer they throw into the role.

Donnie Yen's mother is a well known Martial Arts master who sent her son overseas so he wouldn't get into further trouble during his teen years. He learned more martial arts and got into acting. I wouldn't expect anything less than something very watchable with him involved. However, the use of wires annoys me. I know lots of movies do this but doesn't make it any less annoying.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon being a big offender in my book for wire abuse. Just look at the leg movement when Jen steals the sword. Doesn't even match the speed of moving up. Just arms wiggling.

Having seen both Ip Man 1 & 2. I thought they were decent action flicks. However, for Wing Chun style on screen. I still think The Prodgial Son with Yun Biao, and Sammo Hung was better.

Wow, from 50gigs to 25gigs? Always have to be weary of re-release for different regions. Wonder what got cut out.

CGI's in films are convincing because of their delicate portrait of movements including gravity.
I agree with you on blending wire work into action and making it believable is the key to convince.
Although sometimes I am not against aggresive use of surreal visual or sound effects,
like the exaggerate use of punchy fist sound or hasty backpull (wire work) from a major blow.
It's fun to watch anyway

Thanks for the link to this link mrhan.

Well this certainly sucks! It seems that Universe Laser has the better picture/image quality but doesn't offer english or english subtitles while Well Go version does but it's picture/image quality isn't as good as the Universe Laser version.

What do you guys think?

I have the Universe Laser version of Ip Man 1 & 2 and they both have English subs..in fact one of my questions was concerning the translation between the Universe and the Well Go versions..is there a difference?. Now it's a moot point for me.

Just watched this night and must say I throughly enjoyed this film.
It was very well acted and the fight scenes were fantastic!
One of the best martial arts movies I have seen and I have seen a lot of them. Was slightly concerned that the movie wasn't going to play at first as all I got was a splash screen that kept looping, but then all the sudden the movie just started playing on it's own.
Thanks Ralph for the review!

Another great review Batman. You were spot on as usual.

For those with the BDP-83 the subtitles can be shifted so they remain in the active image area.

Chewie since you have the HK versions do you know if the subtitles are player generated or hard coded? The Well Go version has player generated subtitles. So I'm guessing the HK version does as well? I'd like to make sure the HK version does before I order. Thanks in advance.

I have the HK version, and I use PS3 to play it. I can have either Chinese, English or NONE subtitle. So, it is not hard-coded. That's for Ip Man. I did not own Ip Man 2 (yet) so I can't comment on that.

Kroenen,
I've never heard of subtitles referred to as player generated or hard coded..so let me find out for you.
I know when I choose English is the subtitle menu, in 1 whether Chinese or Japanese is being spoken there are subs on the screen, and in 2 there are subs when Chinese or English is being spoken.
I don't know if this helps to answer your question..it looks like school is in session for me .

Thanks fight4yu,
Ip 2 is not hard coded either!

Thanks again guys!

If it says Region A does this mean it's only good for a certain country and if so what country is it? Can this be played in US? Saw a HK version but it says Reg A only.

Region A is for US and HK. You should not have any problem. Scroll to the middle for the blu-ray region in the link below.

Ok for those not sure about IP man, I say don't hesitate. This is coming from someone who I must confess just not a big fan of donny yen. I don't hate him per say but he just doesn't do anything for me.

But after watching it today IP man blew me away in every way....story, direction, cinematography, fighting, drama and conflict, etc. I still think donny yen needs some kinda charisma/character boost but this film suits his natural persona nicely. A+ for me.

Just received my copy of IP Man 1 + 2 (Hong Kong/Universal Laser version) and will be watching it tonight in whole! Been watching it on you tube previously lol but this is definitely going to be a treat.

Bought the BR from ebay which came from Hong Kong that's why it took a while to get. Just wanted to update everyone. Definitely a collect!

That's awesome. I hope you enjoy them. I haven't seen Ip Man 2, but I loved the first one.

My copy of the HK Ip Man 1/2 set just shipped from dddhouse.

Thanks and yes i have. Actually just saw the first one last night (in it's entirerity) and besides being awesome that movie made me a lot more humble just understanding the whole thing. IP is truly a legend period. Watching 2 tonight after work. Saw some scenes of 2 from youtube and it looks awesome too.

Tried to order from dddhouse but ran into too many issues so i just bought it off ebay for much less! lol!

If you have a PS3 i'd suggest playing it on that unit instead. Also make sure you get the IP Man 2 copy.

I've already seen it like 15 or so times i've owned the BR and i personally give it a score of A+! Best kung fu movie since Enter the Dragon!

Assuming you haven't had similar problems with other bd titles, perhaps it's a bad disc, or just an idiosyncratic bad iteraction between this disc and your particular player.

I only have obvious solutions to suggest. If there is a forum for the Panny BD-30 you might ask if anyone else on that forum had a problem playing Ip Man.

If you don't own another bd player, do you know someone else who does? If so, see if their player reads it or if the disc fails regardless of player.

If it's a disc you purchased, can you take it back to the store and ask them to play it on one of their players. If it fails on their machines too then you have a good case for a bad disc and, I would assume, asking for a refund/exchange (in accordance with whatever the store policies are). If it's a rental, speak to customer service or (e.g., for Netflix) report it as unplayable and ask them to ship you a new one.

I played over 200 bd titles on my Sony bd player with no problem, and then for "Spartacus" the disc wouldn't even load. The mechanism just kept trying to read it on and on. Disc gremlin, I suppose. Haven't gotten around to trying a different copy yet.

My wife and I watched Ip Man a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it (Netflix rental). We felt that the story was very moving, the acting was strong, and the film looked and sounded very good. We chose the film not because it was a martial arts film, but because of interest in foreign films and the historical period. We have no idea how much the story was fictionalized (a lot, according to some of your posts), but it made for a gripping drama and coming from the viewpoint of martial arts novices, we found the combat scenes highly engrossing. We've really enjoyed a string of movies from Asia recently (Mongol, Red Cliff I and II, Departures, Mother/Madeo) and Ip Man continues the trend. Great film.

For those who haven't seen IP Man 2 i'd highly suggest watching this film as in my honest opinion it's a little better than IP Man 1.

IMHO Ip Man 2 is true to the HK Film industry's adage of making hay while the sun shines. Reminds me of Rocky 4. No wonder Donnie Yen say this will be his last Ip Man film.

That's sad. He played the part very well and couldn't think of anyone else replacing him. Thought still lingers on who's the better martial arts fighter in IP Man 2. Hung or IP Man?

From what I know they are making a prequel. The son ( supposedly the little guy in tricycle in part 1) who is now 70 plus and still teaching yong chun, will be in the show but the main lead will be his disciple. We will know then whether people appreciate Kung fu or acting more HK film industry excel in milking it while u can.

Hung and Jackie chan are classmates for Peking opera along with 5 others. Technically they do not have martial acts background but more 'artistic' background. Hence their scenes are more acrobatics than martial arts per se. Bruce lee, jet li and Donny yen on the other hand has martial arts background. So u can't compare Hung and Donny directly.

I think that was a prequel trailer i saw on youtube about this. I'll definitely be on the lookout for it.

Interesting. So between Hung vs IP Man on 2, who do you think will win?
