Just for the record, for anyone that might not be sure, the Yamaha S400 does decode Dolbly Digital and DTS,, http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...4&CTID=5000800

fair point

but with the S400 i also run into the same issue i have with any other system that requires a receiver.... i have no place to put it. before i got my PS3, i thought of putting a receiver under the glass, but there is only about 5.5-6 inches of clearance, so ventilation is a problem... hence the need for a plain ol' soundbar. so i either get the pioneer (for the hdmi passthru, and the plentiful inputs for my 3 components), or wait for BA1's successor that may or may not have enough inputs

I did a mini review of the BA3 a few days ago on another thread here, but this is my mini review for the BA1.

OK,,, I wont make you wait to read a bunch of crap first to find my opinion at the end of this mini review,,,,, the JVC TH-BA1 ROCKS,,,, very very happy with it,,,,, it might even be a keeper,,,, and coming from me, as many of you know, thats a bold statement as I change soundbars like I change underwear.

So on with the details,,, random thoughts,,,, in no particular order.

My room is fairly square with walls on each side of my LED/LCD,,, the soundbars I will mention I have tested in this same room, my side walls are about 7 feet to each side from the bar and my display, one big opening further back on the left wall, with my backwall being about 20' from the soundbar.

I think its important to mention the bars I tried in the same setting as different rooms will react differently in different room shapes and sizes.

"Some" of those bars I have tested/owned in my same living room are the Vizio VSB200WS, Sony CT-100, Sony CT-500, Sony CT-150, Zvox, a Bose Cinemate Series ll (not in a bar shape), and the JVC TH-BA3.
While are the bars I mentioned did not suck by any means, in my opinion the BA1 is the best of all of them.,,,,, (actually, the Bose sounded just OK and the Zvox, for me, kinda sucked).

When it comes to a convincing surround effect the BA1 really does a great job, my test BluRays were IronMan 1 (the opening battle chapters) and the new'est Star Trek (the opening battle chapters).
No surround in the back of the room but lots of well placed surround sound from the side's, Im quite sure if some came over to watch a movie they would be positive that I had speakers mounted on the side walls,,, matter of fact I was really suprised at how good of sound I got off to the sides of the bar, its a big room filling sound that is very close to a discrete 5.1 suround effect.

I have seen a few review's saying the surround effect was not that good with the BA1,,,, I have no idea what bar they were reviewing cuz the surround effects coming from my BA1 are very very good.

Its also important to note that the BA1 is a 4.1 speaker configuration w/sub, so it's more of a real surround than the typical fake surround effect other bars put out.

Overall tone of the BA1 is very pleasing.

Dialog,, very good as well, and the fact that you can turn up the center chanel on the remote is really nice "if" you have any problems hearing the dialog.

I ran an optical directly from my Panasonic BluRay player to the BA1, I set my BD player to LPCM at first,, and then Bitstream,,,,, Bitstream made the bar come to life.

Bass/Sub,,,,, sounded very good but not amazing,,, just very good and matchs the system well.

Love, love love the remote, not cluttered and well laid out with just the right controls needed,,, having the DRC control right on the remote is very cool for late night viewing,,,, other buttons on the remote are,,,,, surround effect's 1 and 2 and off, surround effect level, sub vol, center chanel vol, dimmer, and inputs,,,, thats it, a very simple remote with only the controls you really need.

The manual,,,, I didnt check to see if one was in the box.

Tried the BA1 on my shelf at ear level and then placed the bar above my panel, about 2' above ear level,, as with ALL soundbars the sound was better with the bar mounted higher instead of lower.

Set-up was a snap, it took me longer to take it out of the box then it did to set it up.

No HDMI's you say,,, big deal,,,, I could care less,,,,, matter of fact I prefur using my Vizio panel as my HDMI switcher.

Hook-up for me is my BD player optical into one optical on the bar itself with the BD HDMI into my panel,,,, HD cable box and HD DVD player HDMI's into my panel and then the optical out from my panel to the other optical input on the bar.

Closing thoughts,,, I still plan on picking up the Vizio VHT210 this Sunday when it goes on sale (my local Target has one on hold for me) and I will be comparing it against the JVC BA1 but my thoughts are the Vizio is really going to have to kick ass to sound as good as the JVC,,,, I think the Vizio has an up-hill battle, but who knows,,, the Vizio could suprise me.

Anyhow,,, in the world of ever changing soundbars my new TOP favorite compared to just about everything else I have owned in the past is now the JVC TH-BA1.

If anyone has any questions feel free to post them,,,, I know Im forgetting something in my little mini review.

Cheers
Davyo

I have one question regarding the bar. If I plan to use the optical out of my Lg 42" will there be any limitation regarding the sound ? IE : I have a x360 slim ... would it be better for me to use the optical out on the xbox ?

Does this one have individuals adjustements for things such as treble, bass, and subwoofer?

Finding a manual on this is hard.
Haven't found those setting on mine... but I guess that surround, center and subwoofer adjustment does the trick.

Have you purchased this one yet?

Also does anyone here know if Frys will price match bestbuy on the 249.99?
Yup I purchased it on ebay since I wasn't able to find it in Canada... but I paid it a lot more than expected... Base price wasn't too bad for me ... 388 including shipping ... but had a big surprise at my door... 86$ duty fee :| So for a grand total of 474$ ! So if you'Re in the US .. no problem at all getting it on ebay or Fry

You are most welcome and glad your happy with the JVC BA1,,, it really is a killer soundbar.

When you get around to playing a BluRay on it make sure to set your Blu player to output "bitstream",,,, not PCM.

A BluRay with the BA1 really sounds amazing !!!!

Should it be bitstream re-encode or bitstream audiophile?
Another question is, how does the soundbar sound if you do not use the subwoofer? Is there a way to turn off the subwoofer without unplugging it or can you just turn it all the way down?

Thanks.
Figured out the answer to the question I had here on if the subwoofer had to be plugged in.
Also has anyone tried to put the subwoofer behind you instead of up front?

Could have been worse. I mean, if you bought the Sony here, it would be 499 plus tax. If you bought the samsung it would be the same.
Just wish you would have told me you ordered it, could have possilbe saved some $ getting 2 of them.

Hmmm .. dunno if would've been able to save. If you want I can tell you wich ebay seller I purchased from. Next time I order from a seller that takes UPS to deliver I'll ask them to label it as sample...

I did it yesternight ! Still can't tell if I prefer it this way but as for now I'm so pleased with the power outpout... It can't beat my Z-5300 for the loudness and bass presence but ... I prefer a cleaner audio/video setup than a messy one with thousands of wires lol

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that posted about the BA1. Got mine over the weekend, and it rocks.

I was a little disappointed at first, as I wasn't getting much volume or thump from it. I'd have the volume maxed @ 40, and I could still talk over it easily. Changed my Blu Ray back to Bitstream (from PCM), and my XBOX to output 5.1 properly and WOW, what a difference. Gunshots thump the couch, and volume is loud at 25.

The other thing I did to reinforce the bass was to move the subwoofer next to the couch and corner load it. It's in the same location as my older sub, and does a fantastic job with no wires running around the room.

Overall, I'm EXTREMELY pleased with my purchase. The sound quality is fantastic, and I picked up an open box one on Amazon for less than $220, so the price was right.

In the process, I replaced my existing Onix X-LS setup and 17 cables setup that were cluttering up the area around the TV. Plus, with everything (XBOX, BluRay, DirecTV) running as HDMI through the TV, I don't need to give a Master's class on Home theatre management every time the kids or the babysitter want to watch something else.

I've got mine next to the couch. When I got my older subwoofer, I had found that this was the position that gave me the most impact. Seems reasonable, as the subwoofer doesn't have to put out as much power to cover all of the open space between the TV and the couch.

I agree on all of the above !!! Mine is placed next to my couch and the result is exceptionnal sound quality!

Ordered the JVC from Amazon yesterday. Excellent price plus six-month interest free financing if you have or open an Amazon account. Went with free shipping (call me Dr. Cheap) and they show it will not ship until next week which is okay as I will be working in Louisiana all week. Hopefully it will be waiting for me to play with when I return.

Wish I could answer that one for ya, but to be honest I played with my BD settings so much when I had the BA1 I cant remember if I ended up using audiofile or not.

Has anybody gotten this soundbar to work by programming a third party remote, like a DirecTV or Comocast remote? It would be nice to be able to control the volume with the same remote used to run the DVR or SatBox.

I have emailed a similar question to JVC Tech Service as well...will let everybody know what, if anything, I find out.
