Best Extended Warranty

Thread Starter
Hi, I am about to purchase a Panasonic 50" plasma and would like to get feedback on extended warranties (did search but nothing answers my questions). Will be purchasing at BB.
First of all, I will get an extra year if I use my credit card to make purchase, so I have 2 yrs. to start (I think Panasonic is 1 yr. wty; the card doubles mfr. wty up to max of 1 yr).

1) Do you recommend an extended wty (it would cancel out my extra year from the card, I believe).
2) I looked at the BB-Geek squad wty and it doesn't say anything about a cash value, only that they will, if inecessary, replace it with a "comparable model"-I assume even if a comparable model may be hundreds less in a year.
3) What company offers the best extended wty and can it be purchased after the purchase from BB?

Thanks for your responses.

I went with MACK.

Great price & In home service.

Only you can decide if it's "worth it". I think of it as relatively cheap insurance and nice peace of mind.

It really depends largely on what your motivation for buying a warranty is.

And I'm not sure how much of a benefit the additional year is you get via your credit card. All that does is lengthen the very limited coverage offered by the manufacturer.

How much peace of mind are you looking for?

The BBY offerings will really baby you and hold your hand, but that level may be more than you want. (in-home service, available option to get a loaner if they can't fix it on the first visit, replacement if it can't be fixed, no-lemon coverage, bad pixel protection (2-3 in a half inch square or 5 in the whole panel), no parts or labor charges for normal use (i.e. don't expect them to fix it at no charge if your kid takes a baseball bat to the screen or pours apple juice in the vents on the top or back).

oh the geek squad guys they are so funny, my tv just got fixed had a bad hdmi port, they replaced the board, but here is the funny part, he told me to take my TV off my battery back up surge protector and plug it into the wall... so now when i get a power surge my TV will prolly fry and im going to demand a new TV, also dont fall for their you will get a new tv if something happens line, if i woulda knew about the bs that they tell you just to sell the wty look it up a few years ago they where sued for pushing the wty on people with lies. this was my first fix on this tv he said if it has to break 1-2 more times before i can exchange.

Sounds like you should have did your own reading of the policy before you bought it. There is no pulling the wool over the head with BB warranty, just do your own research. I'm pretty sure that Mack and etc... warranty company have been sued by somebody.

Name a company that hasn't been sued by "somebody"

All I know is its more expensive than a Mack warranty for a 3 year Square Trade compared to Macks 4 year. Theres also conflicting info about their terms and conditions.

Well, let's clear that up if there are still people confused about it - the BBY Geek Squad Protection for TVs is NOT a replacement plan.

Replacement is only an option if they problem cannot be fixed, OR upon 4 qualified repairs.

Let's for sure clear this up - if there is a question regarding Mack Products and how they compare to the rest of the market please post it here!

I do, but I'm not here to talk about pricing or to sell - just here to address specific questions about the product.

I'm sending you a PM with that information - forum rules do not permit me to talk about price or link to our site.

Exactly, it's so much nicer to deal with real people who are there for you after the sale (not just some random website that wants just your money)!

I just bought a MACK warranty for my Panasonic Plasma. It is for 3 years (beginning when the manufacturers warranty ends) and for what I considered a very good price. This is my first extended warrant in several years, but, considering the high price of TV repair (I had first hand experience with my last TV) it is a small price to pay (only a fraction of what one repair would cost).

Awesome, the good thing about the Mack Warranty products is that they are priced way less than other warranties on the market, have much more clear language in their agreements.

Have you had to use the warranty service yet?

My TV's just a few days old. Hopefully I want have to use either the manufacturer's or the Mack warranty. It's good to know that for four years I will be covered if I do need warranty repairs.

Ah, good to hear - yup you're covered for 4 full years. I hope that you never have a problem with the set, but it's always nice to know that if you do - there's a great company that will backup you up, who's contracts have clearly defined terms so you know what will absolutely be covered!

Terms like "during normal use of your item" or mentioning electrical failure to make is sound as if power surges are covered...

Who covers you for power surges within that first year(if it happens)?

Home Owners / Renters Insurance - No extended warranty covers it, but there is a myth that they do. EWs cover Manufacture Defect the verbiage on some EW sites make you believe that they will cover it, but direct language in the contract is not present.

Huh My BB warranty cover my power surged set.

So I am confused. The website says that a warranty must be purchased within 90 days of purchase of the product. I have read on here that as long as you purchase it with 90 days left on the original manufacturers warranty, you are fine. Which is it?

While I dont work for Mack Camera it has been discussed numerous times that you can buy an EW as long as there is 90 days left on the original manufacturers warranty. Their website is in need of a major overhaul IMO.

You have to have 90 days left on your manufacturer warranty so you have 9 months from the point of purchase to purchase your warranty.
