JVC HM550 and external hard drive

Thread Starter
I have a new JVC HM550. While it transfers movies and pics to a computer with no problems, it is also supposed to work directly with standalone external USB hard drives. However, my HM550 doesn't recognize the external hard drive (I tried several models, from a 2TB Cavalry to a 400GB hitachi) when connected per instructions. When connected, a special "USB" menu is supposed to be activated which allows file transfer between camera and hard drive, but nothing happens. The hard drives were already formatted and properly functional. JVC tech support hasn't replied to my email.

Thanks for any advice.

I do not own a JVC HM550 but my experience with a Sony and a Sanyo camcorder with this similar function may or may not help. For both the Sanyo and Sony, you need to connect the camcorder using AC power and not on battery, this is to prevent file lost in case of battery running out of power. For my Sanyo, the external HDD must also be on AC power while my Sony can work with both AC powered and USB powered HDD. Also my Sony needs a proprietary USB adaptor cable and the Sanyo came with their own proprietary cable and a generic one will not work so you may want to check the USB adaptor cable for the JVC.
