Damian,

I tested your file on the VMP75 and it didn't show any subtitles. However, I can say that it does show at least some PGS subtitles in the m2ts files even so they are not listed as supported. Look at my test results here:

Getting support for PGS files in mkvs is relatively new. Both the Dune and PCH just added, so hopefully soon it will be standard across all the media players to support.

The next issue on th topic of subtitles, does the Nixeus respect forced subtitle track flags in mkvs (seems like most players don't although hopefully this will get fixed soon)?

Tested the file , it plays but without the subtitles.

If you would like to send me a sample of similar with forced subs I will try that also for you..

Nixeus have now released the latest Beta of the firmware for the Fusion HD.

Please report any comments/issues either here or at the Yahoo group.

Details of where it can be downloaded from can be found here..

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Nixeus_Fusion/files

Changelog:

Nixeus HD Firmware v01.11.12.17.37 Beta

This beta has been tested by Teddystacker and appears to work well.
Please post your comments/feedback at the Yahoo group or AVS thread.

1) Support added for "sort by date" - at this time, only single files are sorted by date - this is a VERY useful feature if you have a download directory with 100's of un-sorted files in it.It allows instant access to the most recent file.I know of no other media player that has this feature.

2) Support for "My Favorites" added this works on USB, HDD and network shares. At this time only single files are supported but hopefully Folder support will be added in a later firmware. To use this, browse to the file you want to bookmark using the file browser , then go to the options on the right hand pane , click on the star , and that file will be bookmarked. The go back to the main page and click on the Yellow star , you can then play your file directly from there.

3) Support BD ISO playback - BD-Lite Support now added ,it is hoped that this feature will again be added to in a later firmware.

4) Copy and delete feature from USB or HDD is now working again (see page 42 of the manual for full details). This was broken in the last beta firmware release.

5) Fixed date setting issue when first booting.
6) Fixed DVD menu not exiting correctly when USB removed.
7) Fixed DVD menu issue.
8) Fixed RSS "Value recording limit exceeded The following were not recorded" issue
9) Fixed YouTube homepage issue.
10) Better Twitter Support.
11) Rudimentary PAL TV System support - this is accessed via cycling through the "TV OUTPUT" options on the remote control , there is no option in the setup menu as yet , this will be added later.

Has anyone tested if the Fusion supports mkvs with header compression? I know it was discussed earlier but no one tested from what i can see. I tested on a couple of players already. For the Dune it works, for the PCH you need to have the latest beta RC2 fw for the mkv to play (hopefully public fw will be out shortly). You can see more information on header compression here:

http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010...-side-effects/

What has improved ? Is it fully BD-Lite (ie. subtitle and audio tracks selectable during iso playback ) now ?

Thanks. So for mkvs the following support hopefully will be added or still needs to be confirmed:

- PGS subtitle - not supported currently
- MKV chapter support - has anyone confirmed?
- IDX/SUB Hi Res (i.e. 1080p) subtitle support - has anyone confirmed
- forced subtitles, does Nixeus respect?
- header compression - not supported currently

If you supply sample files of these , I will gladly test for you.

- MKV chapter support
- IDX/SUB Hi Res (i.e. 1080p) subtitle support

Just to be fair , the spec of the Nixeus does not advertise any of the above as supported..

Teddy

Nixeus support has been great. If there is a file you want tested, either email them yourself or post a link here and like Teddy said, he can pass it along or someone can if he is not available.

No worries, not knocking the Nixeus, just trying to determine where it stands versus other players in regards to mkv support, and if not supported then hopefully can be passed along to the developers as a feature request. For mkv users (which are a large majority of the folks that use these types of players) the items I had listed above are usually high on the priority list

As far as chapter support, the files I have would be too big. One way to test, use MakeMKV and create an mkv from either a DVD or BluRay. When you play back on the Nixeus you can then test to see if chapters work, as MakeMKV will automatically generate/mux in the chapters. Most media players these days support mkv chapters, but I know there are a few that don't currently.

I will see if I can get a sample of 1080p subs as well as forced tracks

Yeah, that's good news, right? I know for sure Dune 3.0 doesn't support MKV chapter and IDX/SUB Hi Res (i.e. 1080p) subtitle either. And that's all I need now for a decent media player.
One more thing needs to be confirmed. Does Nixeus Fusion HD support UTF-8 subtitles? Thanks.

Correct, the Dune does not support mkv chapters (I have passed this along so hopefully it will get fixed). I have not found one player yet that supports 1080p IDX/SUB subtitles (outside of HTPCs of course), and not sure this will ever be supported since IDX/SUB subtitles are really for SD DVDs (480p) and now many players are supporting hi res subtitles in the form of PGS (1080p)

Never mind. Thank you, Teddy. I know it supports English/ German/ French/ Italian/ Spanish/ Portuguese/ Turkish/ Nederlands/ Serbian/ Hebrew/ Traditional Chinese/ Russian/ Swedish/ Polish/ Czech/ Simplified Chinese/ Japanese (Korean coming soon).
When I tried to test streaming a high bitrate blu-ray rip (>40Mbps) over my gig network, Dune 3.0 played very smoothly, but my WDTV Live got stuttering every 5-6s. How about Fusion HD? Any confirmation? I believe Fusion HD and WDTV Live have the same chip Sigma 8655.

To be honest I don't really know what is officially classed as "BD-Lite , as I read different things in different places that I frequent.Let me explain how this works in the latest beta firmware and then maybe you can tell me if you consider this as "BD-Lite".

1) I created a .iso from a BR disk I own using Imgburn.
2) I Copied this to the FHD.
3) When you hit play a diaglogue box now pops up asking you "Do you wish to play the largest file on the disk" ,

If you say "YES" then the main title of the .iso starts to play automatically. While it is playing , you can hit the "Subtitle" button on the FHD remote and select which subtitle track and Audio track you wish.Once you exit the subtitle screen, the FHD reloads the file and then plays the different audio track and displays the subs.

If you say "No" then then the browser shows the directory structure of the .iso and you have to manually navigate to the .m2ts file you want to play.Again, once selected you can then select any alternate audio or subtitle track.

Do you think this qualfies as "BD-Lite"?

Please feel free to ask any other questions..

Teddy

So what happens for a Blu Ray that is seamless branched (i.e. the main movie is made up of multiple m2ts files)?

I could not fully test this myself for you , as the highest bitrate file I could find was a uncompressed .mvk of 24Mpbs - but it did play perfectly over my wired lan.

If anyone can point me to a >40Mbps file , then I will gladly test for you.But so far there have been no reports of any stuttering at all by Nixeus FHD users...

Teddy

Wow you guys sure give me a workout don't you? , I have to admit normally I like to spend more time watching stuff on my FHD than testings stuff :-)

I am glad that my wife did not ask me this many questions before she married me ha ha ha

I will look thru the few BR disks I have to see if I have one and report back..

Haha, no worries. From testing and reviewing a variety of players I have a list of questions that I typically get asked.

The infamous bird test, could you imagine what the ground looked like below where these birds flew over

Off topic, but the 'real' infamous bird test is the one with 16 reference frames (the files linked above are ones with 4 reference frames)

I think FHD shouldn't have issue with the 16ref sample since WDTV Live plays it without problem, and both are based on same chipset.

What would be interesting is if the FHD plays it (the 16 ref sample) over wired network properly (WDTV Live doesn't). If it does, they may have a different networking stack compared to the stock one which comes with Sigma SDK.. Will try to test out if I go hands-on with one of the units
