Mitsubishi 3D Checkerboard Converter + Gefen HDMI Detective = 3D on Samsung HL61A750 - Page 9

Absolutely,
Gefen tech already explained to me about how one can retrieve the code from the cloned Gefen and email it.
However, I forgot the steps and can't remember what computer stuff I needed.
Someone with an access to a 838 series should contact Gefen for the steps. I live in the sticks with no stores with any DLP's.
I can still source and clone Gefens, but wating to see if the dip switch settings work, which would negate me ordering a case.
Kevin,
After my original clone, I disconnected and put option #5 into memory. When I pressed the button, the light was green and stayed that way... No rapid flashing green.. Tried several times. I concluded that maybe the clone and option #5 was one in the same.
This would kind of go along with tru3d's claim that is the memory was errased, you could get it back via dip swithches.
It is possible though, that the resolution part is what is reprogrammed and that the other part of the EDID info stays elsewhere in the memory.
So we will just have to wait a few more hours for the ones that are going to test the dip switch setting on a fresh Gefen.
Hope the new software update last night got Geaux up and running. If he didn't get the upgrade, he should be able to force it.

Gefen advised me that I could email them the Gefen file and they would sell direct with the updated memory... Once we get the right clone. Anyone could call them and they will explain what to use and how to edit ourselves. They explained, but I didn't write anything down. Ask for Christopher.
Does D* now support the 838? I believe they didn't support it at first.
Another BAD thought. I believe the 838 supports side by side natively and is waiting for a late summer upgrade to support checkerboard. If so, it might solve the 5.1 sound problem, but the Gefen would tell the adapter to forward only 'side by side', which the Mit's, of course, wouldn't accept.
After the possible mid summer 838 upgrade to do checkerboard, who knows.
I am giving myself a headache.
The info about the 838 doing side by side now and checkerboard later may be wrong. Doesn't make much sense, but it's the way I understand it from reading 838 reviews.

The 838 series support both SbS and CB. The manual USED to say that there would be a future firmware update. That statement has been dropped and the manual now says that an adapter is required for top-bottom and frame packing 3D formats.

I played with it a little and I believe it will only edit to an inf file which would override the hardware EDID on a computer monitor. For hardware EDID write I believe you need their Powerstrip utility and it has to be registered ($30) for write capability.

Also, although the 838 can accept SBS natively without the requirement of an adapter, I believe the adapter just changes all 3D formats to checkerboard.

I'm unclear on whether the Mits (838) displays 3D in SBS or just has an onboard checkerboard adapter for that format.

Just an update, I lost 3D yesterday for some reason. Maybe my AVR got turned off at some point or maybe the 3DA-1 got shut off. In any case, my D* and BRP stopped showing 3D.

So I followed the steps to get it working again and got it all back up and running on the first try. Its pretty simple:

Turn off TV, AVR, and sources.
Unplug both the IN and OUT HDMI cables from 3DA-1
Unplug HDMI port from the TV
Turn TV, AVR, and source on
Plug HDMI cable from HDMI OUT on the AVR into the HDMI IN on 3da-1
Plug HDMI OUT from 3da-1 into HDMI IN on TV (wait a few seconds)
Unplug HDMI IN from TV
Plug HDMI OUT from 3da-1 to HDMI in on Gefen
Plug HDMI OUT on Gefen to HDMI IN on TV

Done. When I get a chance, I'll start drawing up the "instruction" sheet as a PDF. Then we'll establish exactly the steps needed for setups that differ from mine.

White worm,
The list looks good. I just had to go throgh it, caused by the new DVR software download rebooting the DVR. Did you get the new software and have you seen any improvement with the 3d?
I haven't noticed anything obvious with 3d, yet.

Jim,
In step 4, should I also set switches 1, 2 & 3 in the OFF position?

Also, What 3D content can I test it with on D*? ESPN3D seems to be devoid of any programming and the other channels dont have the "3D" insignia. And where are you finding the 3D ondemand content?

This might be too involved and it's probably getting ahead of ourselves, but if we could start gathering all the EDID's for the mitsu's and even some AVR's, we might be able to start an EDID library for all to test and use. In the end we would know the best setup for each persons individual situation. Just a thought.

I have had similar issues while connected through the 3da-1 to gefen setup. Not often, but it has happened where half the image might lock up and be layered over the screen, or the bottom quarter of the screen might be fuzz etc...

Until I read this I haven't been too worried, just took it as handshake differences between the actual tv and the edid from the gefen. I haven't noticed any issues that I can't easily correct by either reconnecting or changing the input back and forth. But if this is something that will become a big issue in the long run, it might be something I need to look into.

Any ideas?

Geaux
I know you're still in the sleuthing mode now to get it all working again. But based on your original statement when it was working, "I AM NOW ABLE TO WATCH 3D ON MY SAMSUNG HL61A750 AND THE PICTURE IS STUNNING. ", I'd like to ask you one question please.

I also have the Sammy 61A750 and typically run it on high LED setting and always assumed I would go to MAX if and when I get to 3D. What were you running the LED at for your 2D HD programming? And are you on MAX for 3D? How much brightness do you lose? Does 3D look really good brightness wise, or just so so?

Thanks

Ron

Cruppel,
Sorry, I was away.
Step 4, no just flip 4 on.

Channel 103 works.

104 is greyed out and 105 just takes you to VOD channels to record.

I wanted to post some steps re: trying the dip switch method. Some were in the manual but easy to overlook. I had it working via dip swithches, but it was after a clone which was erased before I tried the dip switch.
To start, have the Gefen disconnected from everything, then:
1- Make sure the "Write Protect" switch is in the "E" enable position.
2- Use EDID #5. Switch 1= 0n, 2= off, 3= on, 4=off for now.
3. Follow instructions for a clone. The dip swithch settings MUST be written into memory. Hook up the power supply, push the button until the green light starts to flash rapidly, release the button and wait for the light to glow steady green. Disconnect and "Write disable" the switch.
4- Place switch 4 in the on position. Important.
5- Attach the 3da-1 in the order found in the manual. Even though I am using DLP Link glasses that don't require an emitter, I connected the sync cable from the TV to the 3da-1. I don't know if this is necessary.
6- Now do a reset of the Satellite receiver (My sat settings are listed below.)
7- Whether you have set the dip switch method or cloned. The most important step in connecting (in my opinon) is with the Gefen not connected to anything, and after connecting the 3da-1 as in the instructions, connect the out of the 3da-1 to HDMI-3 (renamed to SBT Satellite). This is done with the DVR, or other source, on and tuned to a 3d channel like 103. After a few seconds (you will get an error message on the tv screen.) disconnect the 3da-1 from the HDMI-3 port of the tv. Connect that 3da-1 out line to the in of the Gefen, wait a few seconds. At this point, if you have opted to connect the DVR digital audio out to a AVreceiver, you should get sound.
Now, plug in the out of the Gefen to HDMI-3 and wait several seconds for a picture.

*For info only: Others use different DVR settings, but I am using "Native off", and in resolutions supported by the TV, I am not checking 480i or 480p. All other resolutions are checked. I use Native off as it seems to change between resolutions and 3d much more quickly with my setup. A reset after the DVR settings are checked is recommended and reconfirm your DVR settings stayed.
Renaming HDMI-3 from PC to SBT Satellite (Thanks to Kevin) makes a cleaner and quicker channel change. Maybe due to the number of resolutions and timing needed if a PC is connected.
You then need to set the Samsung TV, Tools button/3d mode from off to either mode 1 or mode 2, which ever mode works best with your glasses. Mine works best on Mode 2.
Hopefully, you shouldn't have to change the mode on the 3da-1. Mine seems to just default to checkerboard. If you get L-R or Top-Bottom, just try changing the mode of the 3da-1. Do not turn off the power of the 3da-1, unless you want to start all over!

Note: If you are cloning, the Gefen comes with dip switches all off except 4 on. Per Gefen, place all 4 switches off before cloning. There is a previous post on naming the input on the Mit's prior to pushing the clone button. Seems to work OK if you don't. After the clone, write protect, then start with step #4, above.
Disclaimer: I'm not an expert, just trying to help.
JIM

Okay, thanks again for the walkthrough jwitt. I received everything today and tried the dip switch method but no joy. I am still getting the 'tv not 3d capable' message . I do have a denon 2809ci, but I bypassed that completely for now, just to see if I could get it working. Guess I will have to try the clone method on my buddies Mits...

I did the same thing fresh out of the box with no luck.

I found several compatible Mits television at a rent-to-own store. I pulled the EDID off one and rushed home to give it a try.

I have a Samsung HLT6187S. I connected everything in the correct order (as you have listed) only to get the "mode not supported" message. The 3da-1 lights up the 3D light when on the correct Directv channels, but I cannot get the signal to show on the television.

I have used the TV extensively with my computer and 3D software in the past so the TV itself is not the problem.

My PS3 managed to display after a few tries, but can't recognize the TV as a 3D device and I haven't been able to turn 3D mode on in the video settings to try out the demos.

Of course, I tried every which way of resetting/retrying with only one side-by-side view of 103 until I disconntected/reconnected. Then it disappeared for good.

Disgusted, I programmed the mode 5 with the dip switches. Afterward I couldn't get the 3da-1 to light up the stereo light. I will have to go back to the store and redo the EDID.

I'm running straight from directv to television. Trying to go through my Onkyo resulted in blank stares from my tv.

Any ideas?
Anybody try using the EDID for the Mits converter box to program the Gefen?
I tried mine tonight using the preset DIP switches tonight and it didnt work. I'm going to try one more time tomorrow morning and then head to FRYs...
Still trying the DIP switch method. When I follow Jims step I get close. I tried it with my PS3. When I have just the 3DA-1 through to the TV, My TV allows me to select 3D mode in the Menu. When I do that, the 3D device not compatible with this TV message appears. Then I put the GenFen in line and I can even get a picture on my TV. What does that mean?
Ok,
Those having problems, try:
Unplug power to gefen.
Unplug all hdmi cables from 3da1 & tv.
Unplug power of Hdr for 20 minutes.
Repower Hdr, wait a long time. Needs to load guide, etc.
Repower gefen. Plug source into gefen.
Turn tv on .
Plug 3da1 out into hdmi 3. Tv on 103 without gefen plugged into anything.
Wait40 seconds, disconnect from hdmi 3.
Plug 3da1 out into gefen in, wait 30 seconds
Plug 3da12 out into hdmi, wait 30 seconds
If u lose the error message, just turn on 3d mode on tv.
If no 3d, check settings of hdr as in above post.
If you power off 3da1, or reset hdr, you will have to redo the last cable swaps.
Have to go to wedding, I won't be back on for awhile.Good luck.
Jim
Quick,
Someone try PaulGo' Question above in post #256 for the clone, then do
the rest of the steps. Maybe try just a direct connection without the cable swaps and if that doesn't work, go through all the last cable swap steps. Worth trying before you go out and clone a Mit's.
I tried it but it was before we figured out the steps.
Also, if you are having problems, please advise which DVR series you are using.
Thanks, JIM

BOOYAH! I have 3D!

I went to Fry's and cloned a 82738 (holy cow... people actually have 82" TVs!) I came home and hooked the PS3 up following Jims steps again (thanks Jim) and boom... worked like a charm. Then, I disconnected the PS3 and the genfen.. connected PS3 to the 3DA-1, connected genfen to 3DA-1, genfen to TV... Boom... 3D TV on channel 103.

I have a couple of questions about D* 3D. ESPN 3D and channel 103 work. I dont even see 105 on the list. I've got my favorites list turned off so it lists all of the channels and I never see it. How do I get 105? Also, It wont let me record channel 103... is that normal?

I have:
HR22 D*
56A650 TV
*Old Yamaha AVR with Toslink only (Not using sound through HDMI)

P.S. It was hilarious watching my 4-year-old daughter try to touch the elephants on the safari show...

Ok, here are some additional things I've discovered:

The method I used to set the whole thing up is working all the way up to the point the television receives the signal. I hooked up the DirecTV optical to my receiver and I can hear the 3D channels come on. The "mode not supported" error is likely some issue with my television. I say this because I can put the 3DA-1 and Gefen before the SR607 receiver and the setup works fine. I assume my receiver is modifying the HDMI stream somewhat and my television accepts that particular signal. So, all of that works as long as it is connected before the receiver. It does not work after the receiver or without the receiver in the mix at all. Since others seem not to be getting the error on the Samsung much I imagine I have issues with my particular set.

Interestingly, while I was testing I would go DirecTV->3DA-1->TV and then 3DA-1->Gefen to enable stereo mode (the Gefen does not have to be connected to the TV--this is following the current jwitt protocol). I could then unplug the Gefen altogether, and connect the HDMI out of the 3DA-1 to my Dell computer monitor with an HDMI to DVI cord. The Dell monitor (a 1080p display) displayed the checkerboarded image perfectly (although not usefully, since I can't sync my glasses to it!) for as long as I wanted. This makes me wonder if the 3DA-1 is looking for MITSU codes to stay on or looking for Samsung codes to turn itself off. I thought perhaps the DVI conversion had something to do with it, so I put a DVI to HDMI connector back on the end (effectively going HDMI->DVI->HDMI but couldn't get it to work with the Samsung television.

The other thing I noticed is that the HDMI inputs on the Gefen are touchy! It doesn't take much cord wiggling to lose the signal. This explains some of the frustration I had last night when losing my signal with various combinations.

I still can't get my PS3 to recognize that it is connected to a 3D capable source. I might have to take it to a store and hook it up to a new model to turn it on. It's my understanding that it will store that info from then on.

The only downside to my situation is that the arrangement causes my receiver to use the 2-channel HDMI signal passed through the 3DA-1 or Gefen instead of the optical, since I can't chain them after the receiver. I have seen others with this problem so I'll see how that turns out.

I'm glad I recorded a bunch of 3D programs during the summer. They are amazing!

Thread Starter
Hopefully, now that we are watching 3D consistently we will soon be able to tackle the issue of the audio being limited to 2.0 PCM. Cloning a Mitsubishi that accepts 5.1 audio sounds like the most promising proposal that I have heard. We also need to find switches that will work to allow multiple 3D video source inputs. A big thanks to all those who have made this thread a success with a special thanks to Jim.
Thanks Geaux its been a team effort,

Cruppel,
Regarding the channels... I was away today and maybe the guide was different and your channels are back now. But if they are not, Channel 103 is recordable and working for me at this hour.
105 is not recordable and is only a shortcut to 3D VOD where several recordable shows are available to record. With my setup, its the only way I can get to 3D VOD.
You need to be networked or able to get to VOD with regular channels. If not, 105 will not be visible or available to you.
If you are able to get VOD and still no 105, only suggestion I have is to reset the DVR and let it download and rebuild the guide. Afterwards, you will have to do the last steps with the HDMI cables.
Hope this helps,
Jim

Anyone just getting fresh equipment and ready to start, probably forget the dip switch method....Tried a few times and doesn't "Get Err Done"
It would be a good expierement to try PaulGo's idea, post 256. It would be quick and easy if it works.

Hey. I got new equipment. Well not completely new as I've tried both a clone from a WD-60735 and the DIP method and neither worked. But I can try the clone from the Mits 3D adapter method. Let me know what I need to do. I'm trying to play 3D games with my PS3 and it's getting a bit frustrating. I'm using a 61A7501AF if that makes any difference.
Just tried PaulGo's method and no dice. No sound and PS3 won't recognize the 3D display. I''m gonna go up to fry's tomorrow and see if I can clone a Mits DLP. Will probably use a WD-73838 or WD-73738. Whatever fry's has available on display that is 3D capable. Thanks for all your help jwitt and Geaux Tigers. I read this thread from top to bottom looking for a solution. And yes, I agree, Samsung can burn in hell for not supporting their 3D DLP TVs with an adapter.

Thanks for trying! As I have previously stated HDGuru 3D has written that according to industry sources a Samsung compatible adapter will likely be available soon. I probably will wait a while to get that adapter so I can avoid purchasing the Gefen.

Well I am happy to say that I got it working now. Used a WD-73838 from Fry's. Hooked it up using Jim's method. Got the message for a 3D display from my PS3. FINALLY!!! Now I can enjoy all the 3D goodness.

Geaux,
Looks like we finally have someone with an 838 clone. I think your think'n what I'm think'n.
I'll check with Gefen tomorrow and get instructions for the electronic lobotomy. Then everyone may have a path to 5.1 via HDMI.
