How to Train your Dragon (in 2D) - Page 5

I was just flipping through the extra features on the copy I rented from Netflix and I'm a little confused. The extras section from the menu lists the following:
  • Viking-Sized Cast
  • The Technical Artistry of Dragon
  • Filmmakers' Commentary
  • The Animator's Corner
  • Trivia Track
  • DreamWorks Animation Video Jukebox

There is also a "Keep Out!" section which contains some trailers for Megamind, Shrek Forever After, The Last Airbender and The Penguins of Madagascar, as well as a Shrek: The Musical trailer and "This Is Our Story" featurette, with a couple of video game trailers for How to Train Your Dragon: The Game and Kung Fu Panda World.

A decent collection of extras, but I am not seeing some things mentioned in reviews such as deleted scenes, The Story Behind the Story and How to Draw a Dragon featurettes, the Your Viking Profile and Racing for the Gold interactive features and the Legend of the BoneKnapper Dragon short. There don't seem to be any BD-Live links anywhere either.

Unless I am operating under a total menu usage fail here, these don't seem to be on the rental disc I have. Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of some of these missing items on their own retail or rental copy with info on where yours came from? Thanks!

Those additional extras are on the DVD that comes in the Double Dragon BR pack...

The extras menu displays different options depending on whether you are currently watching the movie vs accessing it from the top level menu.

Took me a minute to figure that out last night after watching the movie.

IM2 was a little overboard on the LFE. Someone mentioned in the IM2 thread that just because it was loud and "boomy" didn't necessarily make it a good soundtrack.

The one thing I liked about HTTYD's LFE is that it was used only when necessary. The film's never loud for the sake of being loud, and I think they intentionally saved some of the big booms for the finale, where they belonged, and where it would make the most difference. Top notch.

You know, I'm probably gonna watch this again today... thanks, guys. LOL

Am I the only one that loves this movie?

We did our viewing party last night for this. Everything I remembered from the commercial theater - and more. I expected the vibrant colors and detailed textures but the blacks are incredible. Best blacks I have seen in my theater. Audio was fantastic. Better than IM2 in every way, imho. The lfe... Had it all. Some low rumble, lots of couch shaking and when the big boy showed up everyones skin and hair was fluttering and tingling. My five year old thought she was getting tickled all over. The adults even enjoyed and were touched by the story. I think this is the best AV and story combo I have had at home this year. Makes me realize how much they dropped the Audio ball for the Avatar bluray.

And I thought the bass in my theater was decent. I haven't had that sort of feeling since I was one of those youngen's driving down the road that you could hear coming from a mile away. Then again my wife would throw a fit if I had that much bass. She already complains about the floor vibrating in the family room as it is. :P

Yeah, I don't like hearing other peoples car bass, but in my theater, underground, I do not share it with the neighborhood - even on the back wave. Seeing this movie, commercially, motivated me to upgrade my home bass system in time for the release. This bluray did not disappoint.

I don't care for it either but I love it at home. When my 2 subs were in our family room my wife came home one day with my sister in law and they thought they heard thunder and it turns out it was my subs (didn't realize it could be heard outside the house). Thankfully the sound is now kept inside the house now. You must be getting some major bass if you can feel the air move in your room. You can feel the move and other things vibrate in the room but you don't feel air moving. I'm jealous.

Indeed, on this one (assuming you have the output and ability) Toothless breathing actually sounds and feels like a dragon is in the room with you.

Movies like this are why we do this stuff called HT, this is what it's all about!

I found in some scenes, I thought the damn movie looked real. Great flick and I put it up there with Panda. It's so nice to enjoy these movies, even when you are 36
post #131 of 179
Panda is still the king of Dreamworks Animation IMO but this is a pretty good entry. However, the voice of the lead was a bit annoying. Still, absolute perfect video and audio.
I thought the video looked really good, but was a touch processed looking and hard. Compared to Kung Fu Panda, I think Kung Fu looks better. If you watch the extra animated feature on the Dragon disc, it looks substantially better in terms of dimension and fine detail. I don't know if it is the increased resolution from being 1.78:1 vice the film's 2.35:1 aspect or what, but if the whole movie looked as good as the included short, this would be an absolute 5 star reference transfer. Right now I would probably give it a 4.5 tops.

I thought the pictures is on par with the best. No flaws that I could see. The picture is just stunning.

I couldn't find those extras on my Netflix copy either. I really wanted to see LotBD too.

I'm curious if those that rented this title from other rental sources were also missing those extras on their copy.

The extra features are on the DVD that came in the combo pack.

Awesome post. I loved this movie as well. It went from a rental to a must own for me. Excellent PQ and sublime AQ.

Good to see you posting Kris. You must be really busy nowadays since you don't post much anymore.

That's funny that you say the included BoneKnapper short had better detail. I found something about that entire short to be off - it looked more blatantly computer generated, and had a feel similar to CGI television shows I've seen. I don't necessarily mean it was less detailed or less dimensional (I did not compare the two in that regard, so I have absolutely no opinion on this at the moment). But in terms of cinematical qualities, and the overall feel of the visuals - I felt the actual movie was far superior. Watching the movie, I was fully engrossed. Watching the short, there were frequent points where "This is CGI" ran repeatedly through my head.

Perhaps these discrepancies are related to some soft-focus effects or motion blur or some other series of filters done to the full length film that were not applied to the short.

Not entirely true, the Legend of the BoneKnapper short is on the same blu ray disc as the movie (with the Blu Ray + DVD combo pack).

Correct, BK is on the BD. You can't access the "Boneknapper" short from the menu while the movie is playing. The movie needs to be stopped. Then in the main menu under 'Extras' you will be able to watch "Boneknapper." Now I'm not sure if certain rental discs come with all the bonus features or not. I recall reading somewhere that some of the rental discs are just the movie, no bonus features. I've received some rented movies with the word 'Rental' screened onto the disc itself.

The only issue I had was the beginning 10 minutes or so seemed a little out of focus or something. These are dark scenes with a lot of motion but then I did not notice it the rest of the movie. Not sure if it was just my eyes wigging out because of the dark background coupled with such vibrant colors?? This is on a 126" scope screen.

I will say my adult guests who have seen plenty of movies with me, including Pixars, were floored by the PQ. The ocean shots were mesmorizing.

I'd have to say that from a strictly movie standpoint, KFP has never really been that high on my list, and doesn't come close to Dragon for me. A/V quality may be another matter, though.

I may have noticed the same thing. Some scenes looked like I had the sharpness turned all the way up or something (which I most certainly don't).

Is that a dragon in your room, or are you just happy to see me?

The bullet list I posted originally is what's accessible through the main title menu's "extras" and "keep out" sections, not the in-movie popup menu. Anyway, running BDInfo and examining the files on disc, the BK short is definitely not there.

New release rental versions from Fox and Warner are regularly stripped of all extra features, but I'd never seen Paramount/DreamWorks do it before. What makes the whole thing strange is that *most* of the extra features are present - usually rental versions are either completely stripped of features or are identical to the retail disc, not some wishy-washy middle ground.

I'm curious about that too - I'll ask in the Blockbuster thread.

Thanks everyone for the responses!

Thanks for taking the time to scan your Netflix copy and for the confirmation that the BK short isn't on the disc.

I was wondering if maybe it was just me and that I couldn't find it because I was menu-challenged.

Watched the Bone Knapper short. It was decent but nothing special IMO. Definitely not on par with the movie.

My wife did not like it at all. Cracked me up. My kids & I didn't mind it. For a bonus short, it's decent.

Boneknapper was solid for a short. We also liked the drawing lesson for Toothless.

From the story and production standpoint I didn't think the short even came close to the quality of the feature. I am simply saying that the detail and dimension of the characters in the short was far better than I saw in the feature. This is a comment on the video quality alone, not anything with the actual story or production value.
