no, it will not accept dsd...

the recent conversation has primarily centered around that...

Thanks. Not a deal breaker for me but unfortunate nonetheless. Based on the reviews here it sounds like the AV7005 surpasses the SR8000 series performance wise. I was going to upgrade to the SR8002 but I may as well get the AV7005 for a few hundred more. I don't need the networking features and HDMI upgrade yet but I may want them later.

How do you get AV7005 to display bitrate
@dbelon...

won't comment on "sq", but feature wise, yup, the av7005 is a superior unit to the av8002...

i'm rather fond of mine... worked "out of the box", nice feature set, no quirks (other than the volume control that accelerates like the super snake, which appears to be a d&m "feature"), looks nice in the rack...

not really sure how many are actually out there in the wild, but we haven't come across any real "show stopping" issues... that may change as more people get them in their hands... that being said, at least a few of us have exercised them pretty thoroughly... i think we've got a pretty reasonable "handle" on it now, and should have it completely deconstructed relatively soon (hopefully to the point that "we" deconstructed the pioneer sc series avrs)...

imo, ymmv, etc.

it will show on the display that is hiding underneath the front panel if you press the "status" button...

darn... it was worth a shot...

before you send it back, try dropping a quick question in the audyssey thread... it's possible there's something that i'm "missing", i'm much more familiar with mcacc than i am with audyssey...

Over the last two nights I have watched "Sherlock Holmes" and "Terminator Salvations" through mine and I have to say I am getting more and more impressed, particularily Terminator it just sounded awesome, increadible dynamics and detail.

Could not be more pleased

In regards to not accepting DSD: If the transfer rate from the source is high, and the signal needs to be converted to mpcm in order for the Audyssey to be included in the process anyway, it's a non-issue for me personally.

Just a little FYI.....

That was a personal review of the product from a guy who recently joined AH and after he posted that review, Gene seemed to really like his review and it I believe they tweaked it a bit and posted it like they did...

You can see his original over here... http://forums.audioholics.com/forums...ad.php?t=69654

I thought it was a nice personal review, but I agree not of the caliber of what an AH full review should consist of, but hey, I don't run the site thats someone elses baby....

Unfortunately I'm packing up to move right now and all my SACD's went into a box this week. I will see if I can find something to test with.

I'm working on the review now but also packing up to move cross-country so probably mid to late January but we will see.

Is the AV7005 using the same Cirrus Logic 8-channel DACs used in the AV8003?

The "Information" menu provides that info, if you don't mind pulling up the setup menu. Also, that menu is available via the web interface if you have it connected to your network.

Well, the AV7005 does not turn Audyssey off with 24/176.4 PCM as it does with a dts MA 24/192 bitstream.

we have white smoke coming from the tower!

Time to buy that SCD-XA5400ES folks!

My DTS disks are all 24/96 anyway, so not an issue here

Thanks Kal!

On it now. Probably March issue.

Kal, will the av7005 apply Audyssey if it receives 24/192 pcm as well? I was under the impression that it lacked the processing power to apply Audyssey to anything(pcm or bitstream) greater than 24/96?

That point was made in the context of bitstreamed HD codecs which require the Marantz to convert them, thereby using some of the DSP power for that. I cannot answer your question at the moment but I will find out.

EDIT: Yup. 5.1 24/192kHz PCM from the 2L Nordic Sound sampler works fine with Audyssey.

No. The AV8003 uses the Cirrus CS4382A, while the AV7005 reportedly uses the AKM AK4358. Marantz seemingly preferred Cirrus DACs in its AVRs & disc players until the shift this year to a common platform w/ Denon. All Denon xx11CI AVRs (including the 3311CI on which the AV7005 is based) use the AK4358 in single or dual differential configuration (4311CI).

Both the CS4382A & AK4358 are monolithic eight channel DACs. Both have similar dynamic range specs, though the CS4382A has slightly better THD specs. And both accept DSD input, but Marantz has opted not to support DSD in the AV7005 (probably because the HDMI receiver or the DSP does not pass DSD).

The Marantz manual indicates that the AV7005 cannot apply any Audyssey post processing to "HD Audio" w/ a sampling frequency >96 kHz. But "HD Audio" is vague terminology. Does that mean bitstreamed lossless codecs, LPCM, or both? Kal resolves that issue. The "HD Audio" limitation applies only to bitstreamed lossless codecs.

It's worse than that. The "review" completely contradicts itself in places.

For example, in the summary of "pros", it says: "Packs a billion features: a true feature creature!"

Yet, in the second sentence of the "review" he says "It doesn’t quite go the extra mile in terms of features..."

Uh, ok.
