Howdy friends!! I know I promised input and pictures on Saturday but it simply took me more time to get everything set up, listen, watch, change, listen, adjust, listen, reposition, liste aso...my apologies for the late response!!
Now, after a week of use my impression is simply STUNNING!!!
I know that coming from a 5.1 setup with the Onkyo SR606 and Infinity Beta 40 speaker system this is like comparing a plain Taurus with a BMW M5 but still, I feel like I'm in heaven.
I cannot say I really have any complaints about the Onkyo/Infinity setup, but the main thing it was lacking was real UMPH - not enough power, dunamics and sound pressure to really enjoy music at good level with full depth or great action movies.
Now, with the new system - WOW. I realize that much of this comes from the fantastic Palladium speakers (especially the sub impresses the hell out of me, 1000W amp and rated down to 16 Hz) but boy do I have UMPH now!!
Ok, this is the AV7005 thread so I guess I should get to the point
Take a look at the pictures. I searched long and hard to find the right cabinet to house my components but I am very please with how this looks - and I love the 7055-7005-7055 on the bottom shelf. They work very, very well together and I know I will keep this for a very long time even if my speakers will sound better with even more powerful power amps. When listening near reference levels the 7055s do get really hot and the built in cooling fans work pretty hard (but you cannot hear them at that level of course!!) Remember my speakers are 4 ohms and the 7055s are recommended only down to 6 ohms, but a Marantz engineer in Germany ensured me they could handle the Palladiums - and they can.
Setup of the 7005 was a breeze, after all the great tips picked up from following this thread - Thanks guys. Upgraded the firmware, no problem. Did the room calibration with all 8 points (found I had swiched LF and RF, easily corrected). I use only HDMI from my cable TV box, UD5005 and Oppo BDP-93EU (which I actually have not turned on yet!) so the default setup in the 7005 worked right off the bat. Downladed the AirPlay update and can now play music directly from my iPhone, turn on the system using the iPhone and operate everything using the Marantz app - way cool
Quick question to Chris (ccotenj) - how do I turn off the system using the Airplay function?? When I start it activates it and turns on the system, but it doesn't turn it off when I stop playing - I'm sure there is a useful trick!
So, it was time to listen and to watch. To me, apart of the increase in UMPH, the best way to describe it has been done here before - it was like a vail was lifted, it produces such clarity I'm just amazed. Minor details I cannot remember having heard before suddenly pops out from right, left, behind, in front etc. Watching movies is at another level now!
I have only partly watched one BluRay yet, I threw in the new Sourcerers Apprentice with Nic Cage - and oh my God, the 65" Panny with this new system makes me question why I should ever go to the movie theatre again - picture and sound is simply awesome - especially the sound. My couch/floor was shaking - I am in heaven!! My brother dropped by (I couldn't hear him until he stood at the top of the stairs yelling at me
) I replayed the Dragon scene in Chinatown and he had the biggest grin on his face!!!
Ok, before this turns into a long essay I guess you can all tell I am a happy boy and very pleased with the 7005 so far. I have not explored too much yet but will contunie to play around in the coming weeks (knowing that after a few hunderd hours of breaking in the speakers and when I am happy with all the tweaking I will rerun Audessy again).
A second question to round things off though - one thing I liked about my Onkyo was that when you pushed the "Surround" button on the remote once it showed you the surround mode you were using, and a second click got you the next mode and so on. When I hit the "Surround" button on the 7005 remote it immediately jumps to the next mode, even though I just wanted to confirm which mode I was in - do any of you know how I can quickly see which surround mode I am in on the OSD??
