Now where did I leave that spare 4 grand I had when I sold off all my CDs with green, magic marker ink ?

edit to add: 19.5 freakin' inches deep, for a preamp!? [and that's not even counting the needed connections on the back usually requiring at the bare minmum another 2 or 3 inches] Yikes! I wonder how many people buying it also need to invest in a new audio rack!?

Unlike children that should be seen and not heard. I like my AVR to be heard and not seen. I remote locate my AVR. Just kidding on the kids part.

Well, this is now even stranger. I ran Audissey 4 point calibration and my Front Heights are listed and I get PLIIz and PLIIx (amen). One other thing I did different was to configure everything (inputs, sources etc) prior to running Audissey; since I did both am not sure which corrected the problem. In any case I am happy with my settings. FWIW, I like PLIIz better for movies than PLIIx. It opens the effects better in my room as the surrounds back are too close to my regular surrounds.

Has Marantz came out with the replacement for the av7005 yet? Im looking for xt32 in the next one. Or has Dennon came out with it's version?

If all the information (the front panel display conveys) was availible as OSD, I'd be there too.

I have a question I hope you guys can help me with. I have an Apple TV (2nd gen), connected via HDMI to my AV7005. I have Apple Lossless files at 24bit/96k resolution. I play my music files through my network using home share.
When I go to the AV7005 menu and look at the status of the audio input signal for the 24/96 files, it shows a reading of 48k, 2ch PCM. In fact, even when I play redbook CD rips (16/44), it still shows 48k/PCM. I cannot find where to change the audio signal so it is untouched.
Is the AV7005 downsampling my files? If so, how can I play my files untouched in their original resolution? Thanks
post #8107 of 9386
^^
No, it's my understanding that Airplay is downsampling the ALAC audio to 44khz/16 when streamed via an i-device, although you should be able to stream the original 96khz/24 file from a laptop.

I thought I should be able to stream the original file of 96/24 using home sharing. The files reside on my iMAC in another room, streaming it to the ATV. I thought using Direct would allow any audio input to be untouched, but the status of the signal still reads 48k. It doesnt seem to change no matter what I play through it, 16/44, 24/48, or 24/96. Switching to optical cable won't do anything will it?
Digital audio over TosLink can provide DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 or two channel LPCM audio up to 24/96. Coax can go up to 24/192. Whether your iMac can actually provide that quality of LPCM audio over optical is another matter entirely, of course.
I'm not connected to my iMAC with an optical cable. It is streaming to the ATV via home share and that is connected to the AV7005 with a HDMI cable. HDMI provides the same quality as coax/optical right?
This is different than Airplay too, I am not using that option. The iMAC does output audio at up to 24/96 (I think), but that is via optical to a dac or receiver. I'm wondering if the Marantz is downsampling the audio or if its the ATV.

According to its Wikipedia article, the ATV resamples audio to 48Kb/sec. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_TV#Limitations

You have at least one but probably two bottlenecks in the signal path.

First, the Apple TV (2nd generation) sample rate converts all audio to 48 kHz. So, that is your primary mystery solved.

Second, I am unfamiliar with "home share." But if it is an Apple utility that functions over your W/LAN, then it probably shares the same limitations as AirPlay, which I believe currently transfers all audio as 16 bit 44.1 kHz Apple Lossless.

Thanks Selden. The more I search, it appears the ATV does downsample/upsample to 48k. I need to find another method to be able to stream these files untouched.

Home Share allows one to stream their itunes library from a computer/laptop to the Apple TV. It is different from Airplay in that Airplay involves idevices like ipods/iphones/ipads. Otherwise it's basically the same. The Marantz is showing 48k in the audio status menu so it seems that whatever you stream through Apple TV from your itunes will be resampled to 48k. I am not sure what Airplay resamples music files to.

Here is a link which confirms what some have said here. I encourage to please contact apple and give them feedback about the Apple tv to allow for playback of high resolution files. I just sent them feedback and I hope enough people do that they can modify the code to allow for 24/96 apple lossless files.

Here is an interesting article where a guy experimented on the bit rates:

I was getting very close to pulling the tiger on the Marantz Av7005 and the Outlaw 7500 combo. Took a while to get the money together. Then I start see rumors on the Av 7007 on some German videos. So does anyone have any info or insight on when the AV-7007 will be released in the USA? I would be very unhappy to buy the Av7005 and then Marantz releases the new 7007 or Outlaw FINALLY shilp their new Model 978.
There are only rumors. Presumably any new pre/pros would be announced in the summer for availability in the winter. You'll have to decide if you can wait that long.
what I can gather the 7007 will have one more HDMI in and out and come loaded with Apples Air-Play. But you can upgrade the 7005 to do Air-Play with a software upgrade.

Is there any other New feature on the 7007 worth waiting for? Not sure I want to wait another 6 months.
Since we don't know what features are being added, isn't it impossible to know if its worth waiting for?

They're probably scrambling to think of anything more you could possible add!!

The only things I can think of are:

* A slightly spunkier GUI

* Bluetooth remote

* XT32 (for what little difference that'd make)

I don't want to hijack this thread, but check out the Dune and pop-corn hour. I know the dune will output high res audio just fine and have no issues between it and the7005. They will connect to any SMB share on your network. I am not familiar enough with Mac to know if that is compatible. NFS is supported but I was not able to make it work. There are major threads on AVS so post any questions there and I am sure you will get some help.

The fanboys here certainly think that's reason enough.

Very useful if you two subs. I would def buy a 7007 if it's true 9.1 (so I can use rear and front height at the same time)

I have two subs but then only use a 5 speakers surround sound set up. Adjusting the two subs was a real pain with the old Sony ES DA777.

We now know, according to http://www.avland.co.uk/aasp/marantz...07/sr-7007.asp that the SR-7007 will still be XT, not XT32. I suspect that means the Marantz "AV-7007", or whatever replaces the AV-7005, will not have XT32 either.

Would anyone like to place a gentlemen's bet with me to the contrary?
Not from me

One can hold out hope for an 8007 or 9007, I suppose. Surely one of them would have it!

Along with THX Ultra2 certification, XLR inputs and outputs, copper plated chassis, a full width display and a horizontal tuner wheel?

Well, your link does say that the details are "Tentative".

from the spec's of this up-coming receiver looks as though the only new (significant) features/capabilities are 4K and HDMI Zone-2 output, am I correct?

Can anyone tell me what volume you set it at when watching a blu ray. Most my movies I have to set it to atleast -10db to get decent sound and sometimes upto -5db which seems insane... i e-mailed my Marantz rep and he said that this receiver -10db was normal. I watched Captain America and had to turn it to -7db I hooked up a different receiver to my set and -20db gave me the same output that I got from my Marantz, I know you cant compare receivers but that seems like quite a difference... I have a MM7055 paired with my AV7005 and Totems for speakers.

I am not impressed with it and I dont feel comfortable playing my system at -5 for movies.

I also just recently started to notice my receiver or power amp making a tick noise when watching a movie every few minutes or so...

any input would be greatly appreciated.
