Speakers to large or small?

I have a very simple system with an a/v receiver, two front speakers, a center speaker and two surround speakers. ( No sub at this time) The front and surround speakers are bookshelf size and not very expensive. Other that that I don't know anything about them. I don't understand crossover or some of the other things mentioned in this forum. My questions are: 1. Without a sub, should the speakers be set to large or small? 2. In determining the distance to the speakers, I have used a "sweet spot" in the middle of the room as the point to measure from. (out chairs are on different sides of the room) Is this a good method for measuring? 3. In setting the level of the speakers, I have all set at the same level except for the center speaker which is a couple of notches higher. Is this fairly normal?

I know these are dumb questions to most of you, but I'm new to this and just want to have a decent sound system to listen to TV shows and sometimes a DVD. Don't really want anything that will blow us out of the room.

Thanks for the help.

They must be set to large. Small sends the lower frequencies below the crossover to the subwoofer instead of the speakers. But, you don't have a sub. So, you don't want to do that. (With bookshelf speakers, you really need to get a subwoofer.)

Measure to the seat you'll be using.

It's not uncommon to run the center a little louder than the others.
