HELP! 1080p playback on i5 661 is stuttering

Hey guys I'm having a bit of an issue on my new HTPC -
Quick specs -
Mobo: Gigabyte H55N-USB3
CPU: Intel i5 661 (Clarkdale)
2TB HDD
4GB Ram
450W PSU
LG Blu-Ray Player

I've finished setting up the PC, installed everything I can possibly think of, and started trying to play 1080p mkv (H.264) movies that I know work well. Unfortunately even though hardware acceleration appears to be running (CPU is about 20% w/ video playback) the video remains stuttering (slightly choppy).

My ultimate goal is to get this working with XBMC but if I can get it working on MPC-HC or VLC for now I'd be put at ease. Everyone has told me that my build has/is way overkill for just playing 1080p movies but yet it still can't under it's current configs. Can anyone help me find out what I'm doing wrong?

Which directshow filters are you using in MPC-HC? Make sure your PC isn't in some power saving mode either, i.e. lower performance.

No, definitely hardware acceleration is NOT working. CPU usage would be ~5% if it were working.

Hardware is good, but the software decoder is not good. Use DSPlayer (built in a version of XBMC) or MPC HomeCinema.

I was actually (inadvertently) not in a high performance mode (which was corrected).

As for the filter - I'm sorry I can't remember the exact name - I did a complete wipe of the system and lost the filter. I think if I remember right it was something like MPC Decoder (i think). Which filter would you suggest when I re-install it?

renethx - What would you suggest I do if I want to get hardware acceleration working correctly for my system. In XBMC there's an option to enable DXVA2 (which I have done) but apparently that isn't working properly. Also - are you suggesting to use DSPlayer as a sort of wrapper for XBMC?

DSPlayer is another XBMC internal player. It is a customizable DirectShow player. Download this version. DSPlayer is essentially MPC HomeCinema, but its UI is completely integrated in XBMC.

With the Core i5 you may have to switch away from the FFDSHow/MPC Internal filters, as they cause green blocking. I just ended up switching to the MS DTV Video Decoder (only downside is you lose DXVA for VC-1 but I have a core i5 as well and it has plenty of juice to play back VC1 without issue). You can also use the Arcsoft or PDVD Video Decoder if you prefer

i was going to build a i3 htpc but a lot of people are compaining about this. so i built a socket 775 htpc.
GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

now i just need a better htpc case.

So I've been messing around with different configurations trying to get the dsplayer setup to work properly.

Almost every solution comes up with roughly the same amount of stutter (never in the same place). Also - as Damian said there would be - there was some major green blocking. So as suggested I followed his guide and have everything setup the way the guide follows (setting up everything as a fresh setup) for MS Video Decoder but I'm now getting a different error: "An Error Occurred when trying to render the file".

To give more info - I know there are issues with subtitles and I'm working to demux them out of the files (Sunshine never had subs of any form) but I'm not using those for testing.

Also I know this question may be better suited for the XBMC forums at this point and I'm searching endlessly for a post that already exists, but in the instance someone can potentially help me - that'd be fantastic.

I would try MPC HomeCinema (a standalone player) first and find the best source/splitter/decoder combination, then use the same combination in DSPlayer. If a problem occurs only with DSPlayer, then DSPlayer is the cause of the issue... (Use MPC HomeCinema as an external player then. )
