Synology DS410 or 411+ for use with PCH?

I need to upgrade my storage for the PCH, and while I was doing that I wanted to move my storage to a NAS.

I don't do anything on my media storage but stream it to the PCH. Does the DS410 have enough hardware to do what I need or do I really need to spend the extra money for the DS411+?

Basically I will rip my movies using my HTPC then dump it to my RAID setup. I wanted to move my media storage out of my PC to a NAS. I don't use torrents or most of the extra features on a NAS.

For what it is worth, I have the Synology DS210j in a raid1 configuration. It has served my VMP75 without problems so far. I have been impressed with the Synology firmware overall.

Most of the inexpensive NAS devices will provide enough bandwidth for streaming HD videos as they are more than capable of saturating a 100mbps connection. The only "concern" would be the speed with which data can be written to the NAS device from your computer. You can pay a bit more money to get a NAS with a faster throughput, to save yourself a bit of time when you copy files to the NAS. You'll have to decide if that's worth the additional expense.

Personally if you are just going to use the NAS for serving files to your media player, I would go with a cheaper and simpler solution.

Well the DS411+ supposedly has some really good read/write speeds.

We slotted in four Seagate 1TB hard-drives in RAID 5 configuration, and then measured transfer speeds with 1GB and 5GB files. Reading, the DS411+ managed 102MB/sec with the 1GB files and 110MB/sec with the 5GB files. Writing, the DS411+ managed 94MB/sec with the 1GB and 98MB/sec with the 5GB. That’s surprisingly close to the quoted 112MB/sec read and 106MB/sec write from the official specifications.

What I was saying is that if your only need is to store and serve media files, then the expensive NAS devices like the Synology DS410/411+ is kind of a overkill.

I would at least like a NAS that could do 40/MBs+ on transfer rates. I'm copying data now to a USB drive at 26/MBs and it's taking forever.

yeap, I only use it for streaming though. .Its really well built and has a nice interface.

The only problem you will encounter is when you get unlucky regarding your hdd's just what happened to me. I got an Out of the box click-of-deaths HDD.
