I am also selling my 2 channel ( for music only) preamp

Onkyo has released a new firmware update for 3008/5008/5508 today. Can't wait to get back home and resume my Audyssey Pro calibration! I hope this firmware resolves my issues.

Were your issues related to AudysseyPro? If so, how?

I have been getting communication issues with Audyssey Pro mic and the 5508, and was told that the new firmware would address those issues. I have read the release notes on the new firmware, but, do not see anything about communication issues. Will know if it works (or not).

The update was a breeze. I just downloaded and completed it via online connection and it took a total of about 3 minutes to download and write to the 5508. I am surprised. When I got it about 6 weeks ago and tried it it the process froze. I ended up doing via USB which was very quick also. Between the two, over the network is faster.

What was improved in this release? Anyone tried already?

It was just to make setting internet stations easier from wat I read.

My 5508 froze after the upgrade and I'm getting a message 'MMPU setting' on the front channel. Hard reset does not seem to work as well. I tried with net first and then tried USB. What did you do to unlock it in your case? Onkyo support asked me to get a replacement from the dealer, but I would rather not go thru that process.

I pulled the power plug in the rear. Let it sit for a minute and plugged it back in. When you do it just reverts back to the previous settings.

The service area link did not provide any more info on what is in the firmware but it did give some good precautions. Turning off rihd is important as well as not using the device for hdmi at time of update.

Thanks for the information.

If I were a betting man I would bet that the upcoming Integras and Onkyo prepro have 11.2 channels. It has been announced that the Denon flagship prepro will be upgraded to add this capability, and that should serve as incentive to Integra/Onkyo. Conversely while it is unclear whether Denon will also be offering DTS Neo:X, Denon can read Integra/Onkyo's plans as we can so I doubt they would pass on adding this feature.

Well, if Hugo's information is correct there will be other receivers and prepros that have 11.2, so don't dispair.

I recently upgraded to a 3D projector. I bought an inexpensive, but very capable HDMI switch so I can bypass my current Onkyo PR-SC886 prepro when I view 3D Blu-rays. This permits me to defer upgrading my Onkyo until I see a compelling collection of new features, in addition to of course HDMI 1.4a switching. Nonetheless, it seems that upgrading is inevitable sooner or later. The following new features interest me.

• Audyssey MultEQ XT32
• Sub EQ HT
• 11.2 channels with both DSX and DTS Neo:X

Also I believe that soon DTS will be offering its competing room correction processing. It will be interesting to see which preamplifier is the first to offer it. Whereas its feasible to offer both Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo:X surround processing in the same device, I doubt two room corrections processes would be feasible.

DTS is coming out with a room correction product? Geez, no wonder Audussey is pushing into other products. RC is about to be commoditized.

Yes, I think so. As you know historically DTS hasn't developed proprietary products to be exclusively installed in their own hardware, as is the case with say Harman, Yamaha, Pioneer, etc. So if we get an indication that DTS is entering the room correction market we can reasonably assume that there is now another major player in the licensed room correction product market. Whereas I doubt that Harman would ever use someone else's room correction, I can envision a situation where Yamaha and Pioneer might want to get out of developing and maintaining room correction processing if it turns out there are now two competing products that can be licensed. For manufacturers such as Denon and Onkyo/Integra I think it will be difficult for DTS to dislodge Audyssey, but the proof is in the pudding and if DTS is more effective, faster, more customizable, etc. then who knows.

Here's the abstract of an AES paper that James Johnson presented this month. When a commercial product will actually be available for licensing is unknown, but this should be considered a warning shot in front of the Audyssey ship's bow.

If this is to be correct and I have no doubt that it is... Kal, next time something like that happens, could you please, just try to test this type of product a bit earlier... as I also have no doubt that your findings/problems where decisive in Onkyo finally providing a solution to this potential Audyssey Pro access problem on the 5508...

Hopefully all this won't be forgotten on the 5509...

For those that have a desire for 11.2

what are you looking to utilize in 11.2?

I can see 7.1 and then the second zone....and I guess there are about 10 movies( to date) in 7.1. I do understand planning ahead but

why the drive for 11.2?.... is it just to run multiple zones

Generally speaking...I don't like to listen to any movie or music other than the way it was encoded

I know there was a big deal made about the new Dolby system to make older stereo and prologic recordings sound better. I was never on that band wagon..meaning I never thought it was all that great

also..and this may have been addressed before
Has anyone ever A/B'ed the Onkyo 5508/Integra 80.2 and the corresponding Onkyo/Integra receivers( utilized as preamps) to see if there was any real difference in sonic quality?

It seems that a lot of people in these forums buy a higher end receiver with the sole intention of using it as a preamp

You probably meant MultEQ XT32...


In my opinion the initial concept of DSX was never meant to be 11.2. The best example being what Chris has always said: DSX only adds W+H channels...

Meaning though that if a signal (which is the case in 99% of cases) is 5.1, DSX only knows to process 9.2 (W+H). And if one wants the "full glory" of 11.2, this can only be obtained through a hybrid configuration, incorporating DSX associated with DPL IIx or DTS Neo... An experience that I personnaly made (when I had an Denon A100) and that I didn't like.

So this new DTS Neo X is really innovative per se, as we are now offered for the first time, a complete 11.x processing... And this is maybe why Onkyo limited its previous series to only 9.2 processing... But now with Neo X why not go further as this is a completely "integrated" (at least ?) 11 processing...

Now somewhere here on AVS, Roger D. has stated that the approch/process of creating the W+H channels is different between DSX and DTS. I'm though very interested to hear this new product, as in my opinion DSX 9.2 W+H gives a VERY impressing result (with the 5508), so let's see now what will be the DTS's added value with this full 11.2 processing.

My problems with Audyssey pro continue. I still get the mic not connected message even after the firmware update.

How do I rule out that the problem is not with Audyssey? Or if it is?

You could try using the mic as a source. Leave it connected to the input used for setup - turn the volume way down - and select that input. If you can tap the mic and hear it from the left front channel, then the mic/preamp is working.

Well two issues:

1. I cannot connect with the USB. The only way to connect is using the network (LAN)
2. The microphone is not being detected during the calibration. I get an alert saying that mic not found or something like that.

Issue 1 I can live with since I anyway use the network to connect pro. However issue 2 is a show stopper and it's been almost 3 weeks since I raised this issue with Audyssey and Onkyo. I was told to wait till the firmware was released and see if would resolve my issues.

I am getting frustrated by all this to say the least.

Jeff ' suggestions are good; make sure the cable from the preamp is in the correct RCA in put and attached to the preamp out. Make sure the cable from the mic goes to the pre amp in. Then tune to the correct input and see if you hear the mic when you clap.

What I know now is that the issue I am dealing with has not been addressed in this update. I will remain obscure until I have something explicit to report.
