Onkyo SC5508 Surround processor [No Price Talk] - Page 89

OK, well confirming your suspicion, if you are playing a stereo soundtrack, there is no LFE.

Have you tried telling it there were surround speakers to force a 5.1 into your 2.1 system? You would need to NOT use Audyssey.

I know a stereo soundtrack don't contain LFE.

I use DTSHD from the source, and have the processor in Stereo.

I have tried telling the processor I have a center and surrounds. It was still weak, so I am beginning to think it might be my setup. Weird though, since it sounds sweet with music.

If you are using Dynamic EQ, it might be artificially boosting the bottom due to a "misalignment" of the offset.

Well, I don't know what to think.

I hooked up my center channel and reran Audyssey. This way there are surround modes available. Tried it again, and still feels anemic. Literally feels like cheap bookshelf speakers. without a sub.

So, I hooked up REW and did some measurements. Turns out the measurements are pretty much flat from 20Hz and up a good way, and rolling off gently with a -3dB at 15Hz. So, that shouldn't feel anemic.
Next I fired up youtube and a subwoofer demo sequence just to be sure I'm using the same setup as the measurements, and again, completely anemic, even using the same setup and source that measure it flat.

I use Dynamic EQ, but ran all tests at reference, so that shouldn't do anything. Verified offset was at 0dB.
Verified levels with Radioshack SPLmeter, checks out.

Something is amiss with a setting somewhere. You could try your BD player decoding and outputting 5.1 analog to input to the analog direct inputs. That way you would rule out some system issue.

Yes, i'll ahve to try some different things. I haven't entirely ruled out acoustics yet, though. But the system should pump out some serious energy, but I don't find it anywhere. Been walking around the room and house to see, but it's like the energy just isn't there.

The peculiar thing is that it measures flat from 20Hz to 15kHz but clearly doesn't sound 'right' to you. I wouldn't know where to go with that if it was me, TBH.

Yeah, I know!

I have not set these subwoofers up before, neither have I had the system in the room, but measuring flat should produse a pretty tactile experience at reference.

Just for reference the system is three identical front speakers with dual beyma 15p80nd and a beyma TPL-150H horn, driven by one Behringer EP4000 each, through a MiniDSP 10x10hd. Subs are a pair of JBL 4645C driven by an EP4000, also throgh the MiniDSP. The room is 4,3 x 8,1 meters. And the measurement I posted is unsmoothed, so that's a real result. Incredibly flat in the sub region, imo.

One test I haven't done yet is set the fronts as large and see if the subs output anything at all then. That should confirm that I am getting the LFE channel anyway.

Meh....

Completely mystified. Most people would kill for a low frequency FR like the one in your graph, especially at 1/48th smoothing!

Did you/he check for setting a volume limit in the setup ?

I did check for a volume limit. There is none. Also checked that I didn't run into a trim issue with high trims limiting my volume. My master volume goes well beyond 0dB, and measure almost exactly 75dB with a -30dBFS signal, so I AM at reference with MV at 0dB.

Again, i will check with fronts fullrange that the LFE channel actually get through the system, and report back.

Sorry for the double post, just reporting back.

Fronts fullrange and subs are pumping, so I do get LFE through. Fixed my NAS so I can stream BD rips again, and tried alot of typical demo tracks. They sound fine, so I think I must remember the Wall-E sequence wrong, or my other room had a resonanse or something. Watched Skyfall in it's entirety, and it sounded very nice and plenty of bass. So I'm a happy bunny again! smile.gif

That is always a possibility. We can get used to a room-induced peak (or peaks) pretty quickly and they become 'normal'. Removing them and it sounds as if 'something is missing'. It is - the peak!

Glad you are a happy bunny again!
