Coming to you October 18th, 2011.

Details for Batman: Arkham City (the sequel one of the best games to come out this generation in Batman: Arkham Asylum) are on the way. Several mags will have blowouts for it in their next edition. Here's the press release:

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Announces BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY™ As the Official Title for the Sequel to the Critically Acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum™

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today announced Batman: Arkham City™ as the title for its follow-up to the award-winning, critically acclaimed hit videogame Batman: Arkham Asylum™. Batman: Arkham City will be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Games for Windows PC and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system in Fall 2011.

Developed by Rocksteady Studios, Batman: Arkham City builds upon the intense, atmospheric foundation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, sending players soaring into Arkham City, the new maximum security “home” for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, this highly anticipated sequel introduces a brand-new story that draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight.

Batman: Arkham City is based on DC Comics’ core Batman license. Fans can visit www.batmanarkhamcity.com to sign up to receive updates regarding the game.

Can't wait, the first one was simply amazing.

Nice.. Batmanning around an open world City would be awesome.

let's hope not. Part of the reason BAA worked so well was because it's set pieces were closed.

Don't want a sandbox game one bit, and I hope they don't go back to that horrible route. Instead, they should take cues from a game like Mirrors Edge.

The one thing I hope they fix (and I'm sure they will) is how advantageous it is to play the entire game with your detective goggles on to see through walls. It makes the game a bit easy and it also greatly takes away from the visuals.

Oh, I don't mean Free Roam Infamous-style.. I definitely think they'll keep all the encounters in the interiors. I just really wanted to crawl around buildings instead of rocks Would feel more authentic somehow.

+1 billion. I had to make myself turn off detective mode every now and then just to admire the view. The problem was that it just didn't make any sense to not use the goggles all the time.

I think I played 80% of the game in Detective mode. It was great but it took away the beauty of the game and made it somewhat too easy.

I hope we will not have it back.

Honestly, they just need to refine detective mode. There's no reason why batman doesn't have a gadget that lets him see visible light combined with infrared and ultraviolet. Add some Solid Eye type computer recognition and readout stuff and you're golden.

In fact, Bruce Wayne needs to go talk to Otacon.

"When discussing things that didn't make it into the original and may be in the sequel, Dini said there was "perhaps a little more Batmobile action" they would've liked to include in Asylum. We don't know about you guys, but no Batmobile segment in the sequel sounds a-okay to us."

I agree with the Joystiq writer. Don't really want a Batmobile segment. Hopefully it is done well, if at all.

It's hard for me to comment on the Batmobile being included without knowing itscontext of the game. It could be done well if, for instance, it quickly gets you from one major exploration area of the city to another. Arkham Asylum was one self contained area. If this sequel has something like five areas around the city, each of them half the size of AA, then driving between them makes better sense than running between them.

Maybe I'm biased about the Batmobile. Before B:AA, my favorite Batman gaming experience was the 3D driving portions of Batman Returns on the Sega CD. Tons of fun, and I still listen to mp3s of the incredible music tracks from the game to this day.

I'm just worried that it becomes a GTA-style sandbox game. If they bring the same style, mechanics, and atmosphere of the first Batman game (with less detective mode) I'll be happy.

no batmobile, i just don't see how that would be fun..

Make it like Eva's ride in MGS3 and 4, and you're gold.

It needs to be a cinematic set piece, that incorporates familiar game-play. If it turns out to be drastically different then the sneak around, beat me up of the first (and second game?), it just won't work. There's something to be said about the flow of a game, and how the gameplay ties into it's genre. Too many time Dev's put too much in and change the play up, and it feels disjointed. Something like throwing in mandatory, die if discovered sneaking areas into a full blow action game, ect.

Problem with trying to jam the Batmobile in is that it's very fast, meaning they have to build huge sections of unexplorable, wasted cityscape to drive through. I've had more than enough of that with a lot of recent sandbox games. Pretty sick of playing someone's urban Autocad projects.

One thing that pops in mind is that the Batmobile is actually pretty good on auto pilot in the comics/movies. It might work out if you sent it to your destination of choice and as it drove you did other stuff, like shooting bad guys and vehicles on the streets or maybe even forensics using the car's mini-lab and computer gadgets. All this isn't necessarily done every ten minutes. Just when you go from one major city section to the next.

Whatever they end up doing, keep in mind that you have to get around Gotham City some kind of way since it is way bigger than the Asylum. You guys don't want him walking do you? Then we're back at the GTA/Infamous approach again some are worried about, and the time to get where you are going will take a lot longer than driving.

The only thing is.... batman doesn't shoot people.

His car I mean. It has dual machine guns under the headlights. He's used them in the movies and comics. I guess you're right that he won't hit actual bodies, but they still can make it work.
Yeah, i was just messing.

Like I said though, I think for this to work it needs to be set up like something from MGS. Batmobile is under auto pilot, or perhaps our lady friend in that art is driving, and batman is concentrating on the baddies.

Any sort of free roam isn't going to work well with a game like BAA

The latest issue of Game Informer magazine has revealed some new details about Batman: Arkham City, the sequel to last year's hit title from UK-based developer Rocksteady. The game is currently set for release next fall for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

The story for Arkham City takes place one year after the events of Arkham Asylum. The warden from the first game, Quincy Sharp, is now mayor of Gotham City, and he purchased a large portion of the city's slums to build a new criminal facility. "Arkham City," as it is called, houses all the insane prisoners previously found on the asylum before Joker left it in ruins. Psychiatrist Hugo Strange is now heading the new facility, and the only rule the prisoners are given is not to escape, leaving them to fend for themselves inside the guarded walls within the city.

Die-hard fans of the first title will be relieved to know Rocksteady isn't going to mash together a quick sequel with a few new villains while recycling a number of art assets.

"We want to top everything that we did in the last game," director Sefton Hill told the magazine. "We didn't want to do an Arkham Asylum 1.5. We want to make the same jump we made from nothing to Arkham, We want to make that same jump again for Arkham City – the same level of ambition."

Two-Face is confirmed for Arkham City, and is battling Joker and other key villains as they recruit inmates to join their respective gangs. Catwoman, meanwhile, will play Batman's love interest, and will team up with him throughout the game. Is she friend or foe? It's unclear what Catwoman's motives really are.

Most of Batman's weapons and gadgets from the first game will return for the sequel, and he'll actually start the game with them all. Those weapons can receive further upgrades. New gadgets include a Bat Claw that can fetch items too far away and a broadcast analyzer to track transmissions.

The combat will also see several new additions, including simultaneous counters, gadget incorporation (such as spraying explosive gel on enemies), and projectile counters from inmates that throw things at you from afar.

Arkham City will have many side-quests involving key characters, harder, more advanced Riddler trophies that involve puzzle solving, and more varied enemy types. The Batman issue of Game Informer should be hitting newsstands soon. Check it out for more details.

Oh man that looks fantastic. Judging by how great the last game looked, these pics will be decently close to how the final release looks.

Those shots are beautiful. I can't see them here but I presume those are the ones that leaked yesterday.

Also, I hope this time around we will get to fight the croc instead of running away like little bat bitch in the sewers

To those saying they should limit detective mode, the only thing that makes sense is to give it a time limit, but that would gimp in an "unrealistic" way.

Also if it was in real color then it just wouldn't be batvision. The point is you're seeing world as if you depended on sonar instead of light.

Personally I never walked around w/ detective mode on, it hurt my eyes after a while. I only turned it on for an extended period of time after I cleared an area and was looking for the rest of the riddles.

Splinter Cell Conviction has something similar to Detective goggles, called Sonar goggles. The Sonar goggles send out timed pulses where you can see through walls for brief periods. Also, if you move while wearing them, things become very blurry.

It didn't hurt my eyes but I would get tired of looking at detective mode. I'd use it and then turn it off. I wanted to see the visuals not the see-through detective mode. So, its effect on my gameplay was minimal.

Also, confirmed for this game is "multiplayer" although no details have been given.
