New House = New Room

Original Post

Yay for getting a new house! I am very anxious to get everything set up in the new room but things are not moving along as fast as I wanted it to. I guess I got lucky the first time I started this project at the old house, either that or I know more about it now and want to do more tedious things. I have yet to be brave and open up walls to hide cords and wires, so for now it will do as is.

The old house had a decent room for the media room but could only be used during night time since it was a sunroom (pictures below) Room had many big big windows so reason for not wanting to get window treatments as it would of been expensive.

The new house is a 4 bedroom house with no extra room for the media room... so I used the master bedroom as the media room. Some may think this is a terrible idea but its my house and I think its a awesome idea! I have my bedroom in the next biggest room and it's perfect for what I need. The master would of been to big as just a bedroom. Plus I live by myself so I got the rest of the house and rooms for other dedicated things like my office, guest room, etc. The room is 14x20. It is above the garage so during summer time it does get very warm in there. I wanted to set it up length wise but window on one end and weird wall layout on both ends prevent from doing so without building a false wall. So I am setting it up width wise. Just waiting on the new projector mount and longer HDMI cord. Just have to mount and run the HDMI cord and then put up the trackways like I used in the old house to hide the cords. Thats about it, Im hoping for now. Enough talk and onto the pictures.

Can't wait to see how it turns out. I like your old theater room also.

Very nice! I like your new look, of course its your bedroom and you can do as you please Turned out nicely if you ask me.

May I suggest you run some tracks for the speaker wires, it would lead to a much cleaner look.

Thanks!

I got about everything done Sunday night. Just have to do the wiremold stuff up on the rear wall where the projector and rear speakers are. I got it halfway done, but not liking the way it's turning out. So I am going to give it a few days let my patience grow back with them and tackle it maybe this upcoming weekend. I am glad to have a media room again though. Watched Clash of the Titans and was impressed with the difference in sound quality without big walls of sliding glass doors.

Update from the first post

Slowly starting to put more time and money into the room again. Just been upgrading some equipment and adding more things to the room.

I have started brainstorming a plan to do it length wise and add risers for seating but more money that I probably shouldn't spend right now. Painting the walls and re doing my wiring is also in the future, but for now the wiremold stuff will do. The room works for me now and I would rather upgrade my equipment.

Latest Update I took down the rear speakers up on the ceiling and moved them down behind the love seat, they are just a little bit over ear height. Really wish there was a easier way to flip the room around to do it length wise for better speaker placement but it is what it is for now. Fixed the wiring mess along that corner where the HDMI cord and projector power cord are. I got some more pictures up on the walls and added another bookcase. Did some under lighting for the bookshelves as well. Still working out the ideas for changing the layout of the room and painting the walls and ceiling darker. I have a good idea of what I want to do but its going to be awhile before it will materialize.

On to the pictures of my progress

New bookshelf. My pops stopped by the other day with some of his Star Trek stuff he had in storage and asked if I wanted them for my room.

New speaker placement and new pictures up. Also fixed my wiring mess along the side of the wall (see original post for the before messy picture)

New lights in the bookshelf. Hard to see but you get the idea.

New pictures on this wall as well and the new bookshelf.

Seemed like a productive weekend. I got a new light fixture and got the Lutron Maestro IR switch. Also picked up new switches for the other switches in the gang. However I ran out of daylight today to get everything installed. Probably have to wait till next weekend to get the fixture done and maybe sometime in between school and work this week I can get the switches done. Also I got another Klipsch Synergy sub on the way Super excited to have two of them in the room and to get rid of the mis matched subs. I'll post pictures when everything gets in.

Thats all for this update. Should have pictures here soon.

Glad to see the room coming along, have you thought about splitting off a separate sub output and moving the mismatched sub to help fill in the rear surround when you get the second Klipsch for up front?

Update

Got the switches done this last week and got the new light fixture put up today. See pictures below, but I couldn't get the track light to follow the lines of the room, so I might modify it later but I kind of like it the way it is for now. The second Klipsch Subwoofer arrived Wednesday. Have a couple misc wires coming from monoprice to redo some wiring later next week.

More pictures to add to the mix.

New switches

Latest Update

So a few weeks have gone by and I have gotten a few more things done. I received my new cables from monoprice and redid a lot of the wiring from when I first did this new room. I have yet another package from monoprice coming this next week to finish up redoing all the wiring. Needed something to do I think some of you understand that feeling. I stole Nezffs idea with the techflex braided wiring loom. I got the front three speakers done and once I receive the new speaker wire for the surrounds and rears I will be doing that to them as well. Also got some banana plugs... wish I would have bought these a lot sooner. I absolutely love the ease of them!

So the Harmony 1100 came in a couple weeks back. For some reason it was giving me fits and I was having a hard time getting it to work so I sent it back to get it fixed or replaced. Long story short, they will be sending me a new unit.

Also pulled the plug on getting the Emotiva UPA-7 They are having a closeout sale on them so decided that now was probably a good time to invest in one. I was going to upgrade the fronts but instead got the UPA-7. Now the sad part is I have to wait till end of March to receive the unit But this way should give me time to modify my cabinet with fans that are very much needed. So now up next on the upgrading list will be speakers. I thought I had them picked out but I want to do more research on maybe doing the DIY route.

Speaking of DIY I also ordered my materials for doing acoustical panels for the rear wall. Been happy with all that is getting done in this room. The spending will soon have to come to a stop but for now Im going to get as much done as my budget allows for.

That is all. I know I don't get much traffic but had to share the good news.

Can't go wrong with Emotiva!!! I"m a happy Emotiva customer for the last year. (and a happy Klipsch customer for years). I'm loving the Klipsch Subs. Now I'm no expert, but might I suggest upgrading those surrounds before upgrading the towers? It may level out the system a bit. TEAM EMOTIVA!!!! lol It is a pity you've got to wait until march though :-/ At least, it will sound a bit sweeter knowing that you waited so long for them

Hi Matt,

Sorry I missed your system, things move pretty fast here sometimes...

Congrats on the new house and system! And I often thought about turning the master bedroom into an a/v room, but I'm married so that's where the thought remained just that. So the garage had to do...

The room looks really good, take more pics as your new toys arrive. If you feel the fronts need upgrading, I would do that first as they are responsible for most of the content.

You're gonna love the remote controlled Lutron!!!

Cheers!

Thanks Brolic.

I was very impressed with the first Sub-10 I got. I was thinking about adding a Sub-12 but decided that two Sub-10's would be perfect. These are my first down firing subs and I am very thrilled with them.

Its definitely a blessing to me for now to do what I want with the room without having a wife's opinion interrupting my stellar ideas.

I may go with Brolic's advice about upgrading the surrounds. The fronts really are not that bad. I am just anxious to upgrade the speakers to something that I purchased instead of them being given to me. (Not complaining about getting free speakers btw) If anything, I want to get rid of the Bose speakers first. They really are dragging the system down. I do love the Maestro. I can't wait to get the Harmony remote dialed in with everything.

Matt you have a great room there!! I think that half of the fun of this home theater addiction is in creating the space and filling it with the gear. Keep up the good work! JT

Thanks JT!

I haven't had to much activity in the room these past few weeks. Just anxiously waiting for that UPA-7 to ship out! I received my Owens Corning for Acoustic Panels, but I have not had time to go buy material for the frames. Still don't know if I want to buy the material separate and build them myself or just buy pre made frames for them. Also I still haven't received my Harmony 1100 back sent the company an email and no reply so I called the other day and told them just to refund my money and I will get it somewhere else. So waiting for that to be settled. I did start to make my speaker cables look pretty via Nezff idea. I have some pictures of them below. Only have two of them done. I have to order more techflex and more speaker cable for the surrounds and rears. Going to be awhile before I finish that project. I have a hard time grasping spending $60 for the techflex lol. Might just be cheap and only techflex the wire that is visible.

Center Cable

Left Front Cable

Thats all I have for now.

It's going to be a good week! Over the weekend I bought the Apple TV 2nd gen. I am very happy with the purchase. I got the NBA League Pass as well for the remainder of the season. I am a Denver Nuggets fan (Grew up in CO) didn't want to send that money to the cable company and get nothing but games in return. I was able to get the broadband league pass for less and can do more with the Apple TV so was worth it to get it. Also just received my tracking number for my UPA-7 so should be here within the next few days. Got the cabinet modified for all the extra wiring going into it. I tried to make it look tidy and organized but in the end turned out slightly better if not the same. Maybe one day when I have the high level of patience to get it cleaned up.

Ill post back with pics in a few days.

The beast is here!!

Happy to report that it is every bit of 66lbs. This thing is definitely telling me I am out of shape.

Got everything set up temporarily for now. Probably going to let it be for now on top of the cabinet. I need to get my patience level up to clean up my wiring. Once I get that rats nest cleaned up I will throw it into the cabinet. Maybe this weekend!

I got my acoustic panels up. Just watched a few clips that were good for testing them... Wow! I am now a believer! Never thought they would provide that much difference but definitely recommend them. I only got two up for now, still haven't decided where I want to put the 4x1x2 at. I'm thinking about getting bass traps for the seating wall corners, so that would compromise where I would put the 412's.

Would love feedback about bass traps if anyone who looks at this thread has some experience with them.

Bad shot for now. I will do some better update shots this weekend hopefully.

I absolutely love it. I wish I could of gotten into the amp game sooner but I am glad I'm in it now. I noticed the biggest difference in my mid bass and more clarity in voices and action. I'm very happy with it. I think I'll be floored by it once I get a chance to upgrade my speakers.

Thanks man.

The panels I got now are Cellulose based. Very happy with the build quality and price from acoustimac. I was planning on making my own panels with OC 703 but decided to return the 703 I received and bought the acoustimac panels.

As far as speakers, I plan on upgrading my rear surrounds next. I am very pleased with Emotiva right now so I think I am going to give their speakers a try. I might be pulling the plug on the ERD-1's later on this week possibly. Just anxious to get rid of the Bose cubes I got on the wall.

Great looking set-up. Are those surrounds a little too close to the listening position? Is there a way to maybe move them up. I would love to have a projector like you have some day but my room just doesn't set-up for it. Well done.

Thanks Frohlich.

The rear surrounds are pretty close, I wont lie about that haha. For the way my room is laid out, its just about the best location I got for them. I have had them up on the ceiling pointing down and I couldn't hear them, so I put them in the current location. I don't have them turn up all that loud since I've put them down by the couch. It doesn't sound all that bad with them there. It isn't ideal but it definitely works the way its laid out for now.
