OEM or Retail Blu-Ray ROM?

Hi All,

I remember someone said it's better to buy a retail blu-ray rom which can be upgraded with firmware. OEM is not capable of being upgraded with new firmware. Is this true?

Thanks.

I've always purchased oem and firmware upgrades have not been a problem. If you get a drive that is exclusive to a particular manufacturer such as HP, you may have more difficulty.

You may have to buy bluray playback software in addition to the drive. But an OEM drive will work just fine.

I'm from Toronto, Canada and all of the oem drives I saw came with a cut-down version of PowerDVD. Even my retail LG came with PowerDVD which I don't like. I prefer to use TMT3 which doesn't come with any drive as far as I know.

The drive you saw was an OEM LG 10x BD drive, with DVD writer,(Not BD Writer) for $60 with coupon code at newegg. Its a great deal. I ordered one - still unclear whether it will have software or not - I'll find out next week

Way wrong. There is no difference whatsoever between the drive you get in a retail box vs. the drive you get when buying "OEM". Firmware upgrades are the same for both.

The retail box may include a manual, CD (with usually crippled player software), cable(s), screws etc. while the OEM drive may simply be packed in bubble wrap w/none of the above.
