Streaming music from computer to iPod/iPhone

I'm not sure if this is right place to put this but I wanted to know if it is possible to use my iPhone as a media player. I don't have much memory on my iPhone but I have a lot of music on my computer. I don't always like sitting at my comp and sometimes I like to just sit on the couch with my earplugs but I don't know how to stream music from my computer on to my iPhone. Does anyone know how I can do this if possible?

There are apps for that. The one I'd heard recommended was Simplify Music, but it's been discontinued. Others that seem to do the same thing are Subsonic and ootunes. A search on "simplify music alternatives" might yield some other candidates.

I don't know much in this area, but you could research PlugPlayer. Among other uses, you can apparently use PlugPlayer to stream from a foobar2000 media library using this download.

WiFi2HiFi streams audio from PC or Mac to stereo system or sound-dock in crystal-clear stereo quality, with an iOS device acting as a wireless receiver.

thanks V Turner for the info. Would there be an advantage to getting a Network A/V receiver like the Yamaha RX A1000, or would it be just as good to get Western Digital Live Hub Media Center?

If your computer is always on then do this:

1.). Buy an apple tv/airport express/squeezebox etc

2.). Download remote app or equivalent

3.) turn sharing on iTunes to on (or eq)

4.) listen to music from couch.
