why use gom vs speaker grill cloth?

What is the difference in the two products? Is one better than the other? I need to hide my speakers on the front wall and hide my surrounds as well.

Thanks, Drew

GOM is available in a wider variety of colors; and is fire retardant (speaker cloth may or may not be - partsexpress material for example is not). Folks who use GOM over wall treatments still often use speaker cloth in front of speakers.

GOM is a tad more durable as it began life as office wall fabric. If you've done any hard time in a cubicle you know what I mean.

Ouch, that comment hit a little too close to home (*pauses to feel the fabric on the cubicle divider, considers performing a blow test, but thinks better of it*).

So for covering front wall speaker grill cloth will be ok? Will it hide the yellow oc 705?

I'm essentially using speaker grill cloth for my false wall panels. There has been some debate about fire retardancy on the forums that I don't care to get into. Suffice it to say, I'm not concerned about using it for my panels.

As far as hiding ability, I would say it would hide just as well or better than the GOM cloth. The GOM has a wider weave (bigger openings between the threads) with thicker threads. It should hide whatever is behind it, as long as there is no direct light shining onto the panel. In that case, nothing will hide what's behind it unless it's solidly opaque (not a mesh).

If you can still see the 703 behind it, then you can just use some black muslin in front of the 703. Won't change the properties but will help hide the yellow. Can't use it in front of the speakers though.

Yup, covers the OC703 just fine. I used it over OC703 bass traps, as well as front and lower sides of my home theater. Purchased the stuff from Jo-Ann Fabric. Click on signature for pics.

In addition, it melts/snuffs out any flames as it's a nylon product (melts like plastic).

The black muslin is the way to go, use bpape wisdom.

Besides the fact that it cover the 703 so you don't have to worry about it, it locks in all thoose fiberglass fibers that keep falling off it every time you tuch it.
