Archos...anything better yet.

Gang,

I have an archos 6GB Personal MP3 player/recorder. I'm about to upgrade to the 20 GB drive. Is there anything better out there with at least 20GB of storage that is portable before I spent this extra cash?

I am also currently in the market of a portable hard drive MP3 player.

My current research has found the following three choices:

Archos Jukebox 20 GB Digital Audio Player/Recorder & Hard Drive

Creative Labs 20 GB Nomad Jukebox

Rio Riot 20GB Digital Audio Player

My main concern is ease of use...how easy is it to find a song and play it. Given that you have 20gigs to fill up the menu system is important.

Anybody with the smaller versions of these care to comment.

I have become pretty good at getting through the directory based screen on the archos lately... I had to have the record capability when I bought it to justify the purchase for business purposes. I guess I'll stick with the Archos....they have a new one with a video player too.

So far I am really leaning towards getting the Archos Jukebox 20GB Player/Recorder.

Positives:

Unit can act as basic hard drive. So if the MP3 thing does not work out, I have another portable hard drive and not just a brick.

Unit is compatible with USB 2.0, which I do not have now, but I suspect will be on the next computer I buy.

Unit can act as a recorder, which I suspect will be one of these features that I will never use but like the idea of having it.

Negatives (I think):

Screen is pretty small. I usually load up the songs like this:
Alanis Morissette - Under Rug Swept - 01 - 21 Things I Want In A Lover.mp3

If all you songs are loaded like the above, can the small screen see all that info or would I have to change the way I title MP3s.

I read a couple of things about how replacing the batteries is difficult. Can these batteries be recharged inside the player?

Any help would be appreciated.

The archos has an autoscroll feature on the screen...so you would see the entire title...eventually.
Mine came with two sets of rechargeable batteries. I have never swapped them but I did remove them once...pain in the ass, take about 5 minutes. But they do recharge in the unit. I took them out once to reset the unit totally.

Bad thing...10 hour charge time using the free charger. Good thing 10 hour playback time.
I hear there is a new car rapid charger.
I still love mine but like I said am going to upgrade to the 20GB drive...
Hope this helps.

gmiles, thanks for your help

I did not know what you meant by "upgrade to the 20gb" unit. But I found on Ebay a guy who sells hard drives and instructions to upgrade your Archos unit yourself. You can buy a 20, 30, or 40gb hard drive. A 40gb unit would be larger than anything available on the commercial market.

This self upgrade is commonly done for ReplayTV and Tivo in the DVR market so it is not surprising to see this as well.

So if all you want is more capacity and you are not afraid of a little installation and you believe in EBay vendors then this may be an option for you.

Below is an URL for the 40gb drive on EBay.

Archos 20GB unit power. I have changed out the four batteries in the Archos with 4 rechargeable ones. It was pretty easy, but it did say not to use different batteries but it has worked fine and they recharge in the unit. Carry an extra set of batteries and you just have to pull the two side pieces of plastic off.
