See, that's just it: many of the ships ARE models in the prequels. Many shots of the Naboo fighters, Trade Federation ships, and others are modelwork or combinations of models and CG. If you watch in HD you'll see dents, scratches, burn marks on the ships.

You talk about "realness": how does a real Naboo cruiser fly?

To me, I can see many flaws in the old motion control work: bumps in the track, misregistered elements, matte lines, garbage mattes, awkward camera angles (due to having to mount the model), lack of track, poor lighting, etc.

What did Worf's son Alexander say while in the mud bath with Troi?
"the higher the fewer"

Ponder that for a few moments....

Good points about the older technology, but those points can be improved on today while still keeping the benefit of models over CGI. I didn't know they used models in the PT because they don't look like it. I would bet that those models were designed in computers and not by hand. They are perfectly shaped models. I prefer the older non-computer generated models.

In the original trilogy, you could "feel" the power and momentum of the ships. It felt like they were more on the edge of out of control and had to be piloted well, whereas the PT didn't have any feeling to it and everything was like a video game controlled by a PS3 controller.

Also IMO, the digital Yoda looks like an animated matte painting. The ESB version is WAY better. The puppet in Episode I doesn't measure up to either though.

Sorry this thread is sort of derailed into Star Wars talk, although it is mainly about CG verses models, which also is probably for another thread.

What I wouldn't give to see those damned garbage mattes erased from Return Of The Jedi's numerous space shots.

hithere - well said. I agree with all your observations.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® TO BE AVAILABLE IN HIGH-DEFINITION FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER FOR ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Star Trek: The Next Generation® – The Next Level Blu-ray Disc™ Will Be Released On January 31, 2012

Complete First Season Blu-ray Available Later in 2012

LOS ANGELES – The beloved series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® will be transferred to high definition for the first time ever and released on Blu-ray™, it was announced today by Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Home Entertainment.

All 178 episodes from seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release on Blu-ray and eventual runs on television and digital platforms both domestically and internationally.

“Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® for years,” said Ross. “Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.”

Transferring STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® to high-definition presented numerous challenges – The series was originally shot on film and then transferred to videotape, which was used to edit episodes together. In order to create true HD masters, CBS is going back to the original uncut film negative – all 25,000 plus film reels of it – and cutting the episodes together exactly the way they originally aired. The visual effects were all shot on film and will be painstakingly recompositioned, not upconverted from videotape. The newly cut film will then be transferred to true high-definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. Denise and Mike Okuda are consulting on the project.

While the first full season won’t be available until later in 2012, CBS Home Entertainment is releasing STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® – THE NEXT LEVEL, a single Blu-ray disc to give fans a taste of the series in HD, on January 31, 2012. The disc will include the feature-length pilot – “Encounter at Farpoint” – as well as two more “fan favorite” episodes, “The Inner Light” (Season 5) and “Sins of the Father” (Season 3). The single disc will be available for a suggested retail price of $21.99.

One of the most popular series in the STAR TREK franchise, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012. It premiered in first-run syndication during the week of September 28, 1987 and ran through 1994.

Set in the 24th century on the Starship Enterprise, about 100 years after the original STAR TREK series took place, the series starred Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Jonathan Frakes as Commander William T. Riker, LeVar Burton as Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, Marina Sirtis as Counselor Deanna Troi, Brent Spiner as Lt. Commander Data, Michael Dorn as Lieutenant Worf, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher and Wil Wheaton as her son Wesley Crusher.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® won numerous accolades, including 18 Emmy® awards, and was the first – and only – syndicated television show to be nominated for the Emmy® for Outstanding Drama Series for its seventh season. It was also ranked #46 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time list in 2002.

I'm guessing $89.99 per season.

So a mere $629.93 for the set? I want these discs, but I'll be waiting for a sale lol!
I might pay $60/season... I don't know.

Considering I got Firefly for $16 (normally $40) and all five seasons of Stargate Atlantis for $80 (normally $110), I expect the per-season price of TNG-HD to be below $60... hopefully like $30-50 (street price). They aren't doing the same level of work for TNG that they did for TOS, but they are doing a lot more than just transfering from a digital source. TOS can now be had for $60/season (street price), so I would hope that TNG is no more than that. If I have to wait for it to drop, I will, but I guess it depends on the quality of the sampler.

Sadly, I think I paid more than that for each season of TNG as it was originally released on DVD. I'm hoping that the BDs will be notably cheaper, but this is one of their cash cows that they're trying to milk.

I was being conservative in my estimate

Sold my DVD sets off last week. I figure with each passing week, more people will know about this, and the DVD set prices will do nothing but drop further.
They will probably be $130 with prices going down to $90 via Amazon and other outlets. I can see that happening. I'll hold out for a complete series boxset.
So only the first season is coming in 2012? How many years will it take for them to release the entire series?

I sold off my DVD sets when I first heard about this, and I hope it won't take too long to have the whole series back on the shelf again.

I think one next year, and two a year after that.

I preordered the Next Level disc today. $15 seems like a no-brainer to me.

Strings lead to mattes, mattes lead to dnr, dnr leads to the star wars special edition. Enjoy.

Leave them how they were originally made period.

Don't you think it's a little late for that?!?!?

Getting rid of the matte lines is, arguably, a color-timing issue and not necessarily a material "change".
Heck, if you watch a theatrical presentation the garbage mattes usually disappear anyway. I've seen such artefacts in the terror dog scene in Ghostbusters on every video version ever (LD, DVD, TV, Blu-ray etc) yet on a digital cinema projection - on a huge IMAX screen no less - the mattes were gone.

Video doesn't react well to garbage mattes, not then, not now, maybe not ever. Removing them for video isn't the start of the slippery slope IMO, although KBMAN's right: as we're talking about Star Wars it is indeed a little late to be concerned about that!

Oh please.

It's called digital compositing, recompositing in this case. There aren't any garbabe mattes in digital compositing because the element (usually a model) is cleanly extracted from the plate. No matte lines, no garbage mattes, no transparencies. A lot of the SW trilogy was recomposited digitally for the Special Editions but since time was running out, ROTJ (the film with the most composites of the OT) received the least amount of digital fixes.

DVDmike....you need (sometimes) to RELAX and except WHAT IS WHAT IS....What you WANT AND CAN'T HAVE leads to eventual madness....
