This is probably for streaming/broadcast similar to how TOS-R appeared on X-Box and in foreign markets
Very likely.
Well, CBS admitted the X-box thing was a mistake, they never intended the 16:9 exteriors to be interpolated with the 4:3 live action. However, CBS Action in the UK, and on Japanese television is being aired in 16:9, both exterior efx shots as well as cropped live-action. I am most intrigued by this since CBS Action is an actual unit of CBS, and have chosen to created a special 16:9 version of TOS and sell it in the UK market. I thought I sort of understood the reason for the special Japanese edition, but seeing CBS themselves makes the decision most interesting, given their choice of 4:3 for domestic TV sales, and BluRay release. That's what fueled my speculation about TNG in the first place -- that CBS did it themselves. So more than likely they would want a series 20 years newer to also have the same options. The fact that they are doing exteriors in 16:9 would be a good indicator that they also plan to create a 16:9 cropped version as well -- which is kind of sad, for all the reasons stated here previously. Cropping the TV transmitted area to 16:9 will make an already claustrophobic frame composition untenable. And from the looks of it, the cropping on TOS was not great either. Which is sort of my point, if that's what they're going to do, then do the old 14:9 compromise, with narrow black bars on the sides, and crop the 4:3 using whatever additional picture information is available on the sides. Will take a bit more work, but the series will fare better, and be truer to the original intent in the long run. Edited by Mac128 - 7/14/12 at 10:49am
I like the OAR live action and 16:9 external FX shots of TOS on Xbox. Mistake or not, I didn't find it all that jarring. Space is black, so it made for a more subtle transition. You could say it was... the best of both worlds...
If IGN of all places notices DNR that's not a good sign. They're usually awful at spotting technical flaws, crap has to generally be pretty blatant for them to pick up on it.
I'm pretty sure IGN doesn't know anything about anything. Some Blu-ray.com screenshots is what we need
Nice. But I couldn't help wonder about this particular screen cap, it looks like we're actually seeing too much of the right frame ... Or more than we should have, or indeed would have on a CRT TV in the 1980s. Note the soft glow that washes out the right edge of the picture. I either need to see more of it to know its not a mistake, or less of it as it would have been broadcast in the overscan area.

Warning: Spoiler!(Click to show)
Yeah, not certain what's causing that glow on the right... though this is one of two anamorphically lensed shots from the episode that were designed for a pan & scan move in post (the other is Riker standing on a ledge on Delphi Ardu -- that too looked overly soft. That's why spherical lenses are preferred for chroma key compositing) so if they extracted the full Anamorphic Camera Aperture, then maybe they inadvertently picked up some haloing/blooming from the unexposed areas of the negative... or the film is damaged in some way. The original image as seen on DVD did not show quite so much image on the right (or left and bottom for that matter).
If you can't quite read it, it says $59.99 without coupon. So, make sure you bring in a DVD you don't want. You can also get a $10 coupon if you order online and pick up in-store.

Is the DVD trade-in a requirement to get the Season 1 set for $59?
More importantly, where can I get a copy of this ad? The best I was able to find only goes up to 7/21. There is mentioning of "per-ordering" (for $79).

Those were me actually... sent the caps and video to TrekCore early this morning. Adam over there is about to screencap every episode... so don't worry. But give him some time though!
The episodes are somewhat softer due to the lower bitrates and smaller file sizes (looking at disc one, episodes 2 & 3 were about 8 GB and 7 GB, respectively). But they really look just fine. 13 feet back on my 8-foot screen, everything looks sharp and colorful.
I say, buy it without hesitation. I did! The "Energized!" feature is outstanding as well (only VAM I've watched so far).
Ok, I'm stumped. Was the ad posted earlier here a separate one found in a newspaper or something?
My local Best Buy had their print ads by the door like they usually do that are a duplicate of what I can find online in their "Weekly Ad" section.
Here's the relavent ad:
So all indications are that they intend to sell the set for $79. I would rather get it for $59, obviously. I just do not have anything in hand to back this up.

The other ad is this coming weeks ad...someone managed to post a copy of next weeks flyer early.
Got it. And, if I recall correctly, the new ads appear on Sunday. That's cutting it pretty close. I may not be able to cancel my Amazon order in time.
Yeah I would cancel it by tonight or the latest, early tomorrow. I've had Amazon ship my items on Saturday which makes canceling impossible of course. I will probably go with Best Buy this time too...that's a very good deal!
