Onkyo s5300 setup

Hi,

I just purchased the Onkyo s5300. I am very exited to try it out, but i'm having problems.

What I currently have:
- Plasma TV with HDMI Inputs
- PS3 with HDMI Connection
- Desktop with HDMI Video output
- Regular Basic Cable for Basic Channels

I installed all the speakers and connected to the reciever as indicated in the quick setup guide. To start, I just wanted to test the PS3, as it seems the simplest. I connected the PS3 to the Game Input on the Onkyo reciever via HDMI cable. Then I used another HDMI cable to connect the HDMI Output on the reciever to HDMI input on my TV. I put the video (HDMI 2) on my TV, and Game Input on the Onkyo reciever, but I'm not getting any video or sound when I turn on my PS3. Am I doing something wrong?

Another question is, how would I connect the Basic Cable so that I can use the Onkyo as well?

- you can click the rear view to see the connections.

Thanks in advance!

You may need to go into the receivers main menu and turn on the HDMI out. That might be set to off by default. Did you have the PS3 set up via HDMI before? If not you should probably do a re-set up of the PS3. The PS3 does do an auto set up for video when you first connect it. You should always go in and check out what settings it has picked for video and audio. You may need to manually adjust these settings.

Thx for the promt reply .. yes the PS3 was connected via HDMI before directly to the TV. Also, how would I connect the basic cable?

Hi kavkazi, does basic cable come with a STB (set top box)? If not then connect (basic cable) direct to Tv and run optical cable fromt Tv to receiver.

Don't know what kind of cable box you have. If it is just a standard non HD box it should have a set of analogue RCA's. The red/white for sound and the yellow for video. You could connect those to the Onkyo's analogue cable satellite in's. Then I think your Onkyo should send that out over it's HDMI out to your TV. I do own Onkyo's but not this particular one. With this kind of connection you will be a little limited with audio and video though.

If you can do what JChin said. That way you can get the true 5.1 DD from your cable box. Digital coax will also work for the audio.

Unfortunately I dont have a digital box right now .. Just a basic cable ...

So I would connect that to the tv, and should I use RCA or Componnects to connect to the reciever? Thx

Sound like a possible handshake issue. I suggest try connecting the PS3 to other HDMI Input jack (1, 2 or 3).

And also try resetting the PS3 by holding the ON button for a few second.

Do you have the cable feed going straight into your TV now? If so then you should just hook the cable coax line straight into the TV. I thought a set top box was needed no matter what. Even with non HD. Your television should have an audio out of some sort. Connect that to your receiver. If your TV has a digital audio out use that one. By using a digital coax, or optical cable there is a slight chance you will still get DD 5.1. At the least you will get 2.0 and have to let the receiver matrix the audio to 5.1.
