I respect the 303D and its current users. However, from experience, I'd rather deal with a HTPC. I was hoping the Dune 303D would be more turn-key and reliable, but I was wrong. Evidently, it'll be some time 'til Dune get XBMC, but I'm not waiting for that day to happen.

I'd build a reliable HTPC, with a slight added expense.

I still think the Dunes and the iPad app 10Muse is still the best set-up I have ever dealt with. If the developer created an Android app in order to get cheaper tablets (or different sizes) I think it would be an absolute killer combination.

I really like the XBMC jukebox. It's the best out of all the jukeboxes I've used. However, I've been having issues with Netflix and Hulu addons. Neither will work at all. I can install them, but when I try to access Netflix it gives me an error. The TV303D isn't a bad media player. So far it has been good.

I need to give 10 Muse another try, and see if I end up liking it.

The third party add-ons have been a headache for me, as well. Even YouTube's content that requires age verification doesn't seem to work on there, after I sign in. However, you can't hold The XBMC Team responsible for third party authored add-on's not working correctly.

I am very pleased enough with the very functional scraper, and custom skins available. I recommend the "Transparency!" skin, if you prefer to have fanart backdrops viewable.

Yeah I agree that it isn't XBMC fault. I was just trying to see if I could make an all in one device c

I would not mess with the addons just add shortcuts. to netflix.com and hulu and dont worry about the addons. When you use an HTPC and while it seems ti can be seamless it usually easier to take the easy road its not as user friendly but gets the job done

Tivo compliments a Dune perfectly. I use my Dune H1 to play all of my Bluray files and a Tivo to play everything else. (Online services, music, DVD files.) With all the sales Tivo has, even with a lifetime service upgrade it's very price competitive with an HTPC, zero hassle and completely wife friendly.

I did see a 303D running XMBC at the NAB show this year.

HDi always brings out vaporware to NAB and other shows. How many models have they shown that have never ever seen the light outside of these shows... I can count at least 6.

I've recently moved my Dune HD Max to my main home theater where it is now connected to an Anthem D2 processor. It can accecpt 5.1 LCPM over HDMI for decoded DTS-HD/MA, and TruHD. Previously, it was connected just to my Plasma in the Living Room. All of my Blu-Ray rips are .mkv with High Def Audio. Can the HD Max properly decode DTS-HD/MA and TruHD from the .mkv rips?
post #10452 of 10812
Yes it should be able to do it. Make sure your audio settings are not set to decode but to bitstream. Also make sure you select the right audio track.
post #10453 of 10812
Thanks. I tried a movie with both DTS-MA and TruHD tracks. DTS-MA sounds fine, I just have no way of confirming I'm not just getting the Core DTS track. TruHD had no voices on the soundtrack. I think the rip is fine, so I'm not sure if that is a Dune issue with TruHD?
post #10454 of 10812
I just reread your post; your anthem does not decode DTS-MA nor Tru-HD, is this correct?
If so, then you have to let your Dune decode your lossless audio tracks. I am not sure if the output would be LPCM, but it may very well be. It may be also the case that it may not work properly as I am guessing that most people use bitstream or stereo out (older TVs) and it hasn't been fully tested.
I wish I could try it out for you but all my HT gear is in a container waiting on my new house.
Maybe other users can give it a go and post back.
post #10455 of 10812
Hi. Correct. The Anthem I have does not decode DTS-MA or Tru-HD. This must be done on the player. The Oppo Blu-Ray player I have does this without problem. Wanted to make certain it was the same for the Dune. Should be--I see in the Dune HD Max documentation, it claims it supports DTS-MA and Tru-HD, I just want to confirm that it works.
post #10456 of 10812
Yes it supports both. I had my setup similar to yours. Oppo for blu-ray discs and audio CDs and Dune for Mkv rips. No problem with lossless audio; It was setup to bitstream to my Marantz. I was however using the option to decode to stereo in the Dune when I connected it to an old Panny plasma and it worked fine. I never tried the other decoding options.

+1
post #10458 of 10812
So the Dune will decode both DTS and Dolby loss-less formats on .mkv rips?
post #10459 of 10812
I think you need a patch to be able to decode hd audio to lpcm. search this topic for it.

It's the way business is done! They just got it working and said the newer models would be able to run XMBC. No time frame was giving! Or a positive release! Thing is with Dune I much rather them bring products to show, them just release products that are going to be a headache! Think HiMedia 900! Brand new tech lets let the public guinea pig it! People seem to forget Dune just works!

I agree that the Dunes just work but they always show off at least one device every year that never ever makes it market. How many "Pro" units have they shown that never ever made it out of the show. What makes you think that the XMBC version of their players is any different. No one has seen it working outside of shows or factory demos.

Fool me once, shame on you...fool me 6+ times... I am calling bull$hit.

The just works Moto Seems to have gone out the door now they finally bumped up to the light weight SDK They have had the same issues that plagued all models on the sigma lightwieght sdk. When they kept on the older sdk versions they were rock solid. The strange part is they say "they just got it work" Do they mean they are doing there own microcode now or they had a test version of the SIGMA/xbmc partnership. Sigma demoed a partially working xbmc at IBC in 2011 if it still has not matured past that I dont think it will.

My wife likes watching her TV Shows on Hulu, and at times watches some stuff on Netflix, and other times she watches a movie on the Dune. So, rather than having her and the kids using her laptop for Hulu, the PS3 for Netflix and the Dune for all of our ripped movies, I am trying to make one HTPC that can do all that.

I love my Dunes, but it is time to move on. The Dune Smart Series are outrageously priced, and even Dune has started to build a HTPC with XBMC support rolleyes.gif So, I will be selling my Dune TV303D, and building an HTPC. If everything goes well, I will be selling my Dune D1 next to build another HTPC. One for the living room and another for the bedroom.

Even their scraper is better than Zappiti, Yadis, and YAMJ combined. I scrapped all of my movies with 100% accuracy. So, far my testing with my Win 7 PC has been pretty good. I had a minor stuttering issue, which I can't replicate again. Now, I'm must continue converting my folder structure movies to MKV with MKVMerge...approximately 75 left to do.

Have you ever tried using some kind of "all in one" remote type device.... I use roomie remote and it consolidates everything perfectly for me....If you wife wants to watch Hulu, just program a key named Hulu and have the remote switch it to that exact setup...same thing with the kids and Netflix.... I bought the Zappiti player hoping it would be an all-in-one streaming device for me...well, I ended up scrapping it and going with the smart series because they just plain work...

Im done with trying all in one solutions lol...(unless its a remote control)...because buying the devices that work best at what they are praised for and then having one touch access to them via remote has been the only way I have ever achieved AV bliss...so I'm sticking with that method...

I've heard about but never thought about trying it out. I'm at work right now working a 14 hr day, but I'll prolly bug you about this tomorrow. Thanks

Got a zappiti question.....

Is there a way to "keep" users in the Zappiti GUI and not allow them access to the Dune interface...I have customized the remote and removed all the buttons that would allow access to the Dune GUI...problem is, I had to remove the menu, stop, return, and a few other buttons to do so and now you can only navigate forward through the program...I really would like to use the return button but if you hit return on the start up zappiti screen, it will navigate back to the dune GUI...same with the stop button on the Zappiti GUI, it will go back to the Dune GUI....but I would like to keep the stop button because during playback of the movie, using the stop button will go back to the Zappiti GUI...I guess to summarize, if I could:

-- Disable the return button on the first Zappiti screen (the one that comes up after autoload or when you start the program) and
-- Disable the stop button during use of the Zappiti GUI

I would be a happy camper....that would keep anyone completely out of the dune interface....

I have the full remote so that I can access, change, edit whatever I need to, but I would keep that out of the hands of everyone else using the system...

I have had a very good experience with mine...

zappiti isn't a program. It's simply a dune_folder.txt file speciying an image to show and a file to play (possibly another folder / dune_folder.txt) conceptually what you want to do "might" be possible by writing one's own php plugin (i.e. able to catch events), but that's a bit of a job (no good documentation on how to write one to start)

so I've been annoyed with the fact that the dune doesn't seem to turn off automatically if not used (it just goes into screen saver mode). could be something I've missed, but assuming its not working on a shell script that monitors the dune's log files for updates and then shuts down after a delta has passed without any usage
Code:
#!/bin/bash

path=/var/log/run
files=("play.log" "shell.log")
minutes=15

delta=`expr $minutes \* 60`

while [ 1 ]
do
        max=0

        for file in "${files[@]}"
        do
                if [ -e $path/$file ]
                then
                        filedate=`stat -c %Z $path/$file`
                        if [ $filedate -gt $max ]
                        then
                                max=$filedate
                        fi
                fi
        done

        max=`expr $max + $delta`
        date=`date +%s`

        if [ $date -gt $max ]
        then
                wget http://localhost/cgi-bin/do?cmd=standby
        fi

        sleep 60
done

now just need to get it hooked up on each boot
