Any idea what the fail rate is for hard drives in synology boxes? Debating a 1512+ or spending about 5 or 6 hundred to build a server, but I don't think I want to deal with the hassle of everything. Thoughts?

I'm looking at the 1512 also, not a whole lot to differ from the 1513. I've looked at the Qnap but I like the upgradeabillity of the synology.

I don't know the answer, but would think this is less a question of the NAS box failure rate vs the failure rate of the specific drives you're using. In other words, I believe you're much more likely to get a hard drive failure because of its own failure as opposed to the NAS causing it to go bad. Get drives with a good reliability record and you'll probably be OK with any NAS. Obviously environmental issues can also contribute to the failure.

I've got a NetGear ReadyNAS Ultra and a Qnap TS-659. I found the ReadyNas to be easier to use in my home. Qnap is quieter, faster, and has a lot more 'business' features, but all those features mean you need to know more to set it up.

Thanks for the insights. The only reason I'm considering building my own server is for using Plex if I were traveling and wanted to access my movies/music. I know transcoding is easy for a server with average specs, but I really don't want to have to deal with anything beyond a simple setup and configuration.

I agree. Also, western digital red drives were made for NAS. They work great in my Netgear ReadyNas.

Seagate also has their NAS version. I have run Green, LP, Red, etc.... drives (between Seagate and WD) and for the most part have had good luck with. Right now I have about 15 drives in my server (some WD 3TB Reds and Seagate 3-4TB LP drives)

How is the ReadyNAS in terms of simplicity of use and ease of troubleshooting? I've had a Synology for 2 months (3TB Seagate inside) and I HATE it. Nothing but conflicts and hassles. And Synology customer support is atrocious.

Its very user friendly. Pretty much "plug n play". You can go into advanced mode if you like, which offers deeper options such as folder permissions, users, etc. I've had no issues with mine but they have a forum that offers help if needed.

The processor speed is great as well. I really couldn't be any happier. Especially for the price. I strongly suggest it.

I have issues with my ReadyNAS most recently one would not boot.
I had to sign a for a $350 service contract to speak with a tech.
It turns out it was a bug that occurred when the logs became full.
We got it resolved,I had to push pretty hard but got them to refund my contract fee since they bug broke my NAS.

tech support was great, the company, I guess they need a way to make money

Has anyone noticed slow/stuck loads on particular movies? Went to watch GI Joe rise of cobra and it appeared to load, but just stuck on a black screen. Tried it on bd lite and it started right up.

Happens fairly often on my H1 with full ISO BDs. BD JAVA causes the player to choke, and Lite playback is the only solution. I don't know if there's a way to disable BD-Live on these players, but if there was that'd be the thing to do first.

Yes, but only on particular Blu-Ray titles. Actually, all Blu-Ray rips take some time to load, but a few take a ridiculous amount of time. "Game of Thrones" has 4 minutes of black before anything shows up on the screen, and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" took so long that we went out for dinner while we waited.

It is obviously a Sigma issue, as my NeoTV-550 takes the exact same amount of time as the Dune on each "problem" title.

I've finally caved on full menu support and started converting all my iso's to MKV. They start instantly, I am still getting chapter points, forced subtitles haven't been a problem, and once I got used to used in the tool (I've been using Makemkv), the process was fairly painless. I still haven't finished but after just a few days of converting I freed over 2TB of space on my RAID as a fringe benefit. The only thing I missi is the spiffy scene selection popup menu bars, but it is so rare when I want to use those anyway, it is really a non issue compared to the benefits. For me.

Me too! Since bd-lite looks like the future I've started using it and have gone back and re-ripped any movies with seamless branch issues that I had originally ripped with DVDFab using ClownBD. So far so good. bd-lite is good enough for me.

This is a primary reason why I now prefer the D1 I bought over my 550. The fact that I can use bd lite for these titles. The second reason being, if the device gets screwed up (happens much less often on the D1 than on the 550), I can reboot it with the power button instead of having to unplug the device.

What's wrong at the moment with Dune and their firmware updates ?
I installed the latest beta and it doesn't recognize DVD-ISO's anymore, hey are not even visble in a directory.
A normal VIDEO-TS became now , when opened, a set of MPG's ...... impossible to chose from a menu , they are all separate MPG's without the DVD structure.
Why all those Russian TV and Radio ?

It was perfect with the latest stable firmware, but those updated bèta's give a lot of problems.
My advice : do not install them !!!

Check the set up and be sure you're not showing system files...

No Zappiti export to NAS - cured

Posted a while back about my Zappiti data not being exported to my NAS. Problem is solved. The paragraph below is a copy of the post on the Zappiti forum. Thanks to everyone here as well.

OK, I am going to publicly humiliate myself, because it might help someone else out. But I sure do feel REALLY stupid.
I have been fighting a problem of the scraped data not being exported to my NAS. I had posted earlier, asking for help with the problem. Tried all of the suggestions - Thanks to those who replied - but nothing worked. I would get to the point where I clicked the export button and Zappiti would put up the window with the message "Complete - Your entire collection is exported". I would then check the NAS and nothing was there. Well, tonight I was giving it one last shot before giving up. Tried several different things, but again nothing worked.
Then I thought, maybe if I click on the message it will give me some type of error message. So, I clicked on the message. No error message, but my data was exported to the NAS. All this time, I thought that "Complete - Your entire collection is exported" was a status message, but it was a button waiting to be clicked, to do the export. DOH!!!

Anyway, Zappiti works now and I am really pleased with the results. Good WAF also.

I need a clue here. neither of my dune players suddenly find any network attached drives via SMB. Media players like tversity work just fine but don't see isos.

The dune players see each other but not the drives. The networked machines are win 7 pro.

Could one of my routers suddenly be filtering that sort of protocal and be defective?

I need a clue.

Any ideas?

This happened to me earlier and it happened randomly so I stopped using SMB. Been using NFS and it has been much more stable between the 2 dunes (H1 and D1).....sometimes you can't access the locations just accessed by the other unit and changing the TCP/UDP modes on the settings to flip seemed to do the trick every time (quicker way than deleting and adding again).

Good to know that you got it working. I switched from Zappiti and Yadis to 10Muse now biggrin.gif

I wish 10muse would expand. Been waiting for an android version for over a year. thought they said they were working on it but guess not. Seems pretty nice and with the cheap 7" android tablets they make for awesome remotes. I currently use yamj/eversion for the tv skin then the iskin for the tablet it works good enough but would like to explore other tablet options.

My wife and kids love the 10Muse app. It's much easier for them now to pick whatever movie they want to watch. Now, I am doing some research on what will I need to get the TV, AVR and Dune to turn on all at once. Harmony remotes are not an option, I own one, and it sucks.

The biggest issue when I spoke to the developer at the time was that there were too many branches of Android to make it worth while putting resources in. I know there were also looking to see how the Windows Mobile devices took off (which obviously haven't fared that well)

I know there is that iRule App, however, I think all the appliances you want to turn on need to be able to be controlled over IP.

I actually have 2 Harmony's (one IR and one RF) and for the most part they work well. I was actually looking at getting the Harmony Hub which will give you RF and you can control everything via their App

I'm looking at Roomie Remote.

That looks nice. The only issue I have is my tvs are not connected to the internet, so I would either still need a remote to turn on/off the tv or get an IR adapter for the mobile device (not ideal IMO)
Irule (what I use) and Roomie both can control IR devices with the addition of a global cache itach device. It takes IP WiFi signals sent from you android or ios device and translates to Ir and is sent out to your equipment.

Dune player itself can be controlled via IP but most TVs, older AVRs, etc still need ir.

Itach with wired connection runs about $100; WiFi a bit more expensive.

I was reading through some of the posts in Logitech hub/ultimate forum here on AVS and I'm lead to believe that the RF portion only works between the hub and the remote. A poster was trying to control his video screen and it would not work.

Here is the post: Quote:

Correct. The Harmony remotes can not control things via RF. Only via IR or Bluetooth. RF is only used for communication between the remote and the hub.

Can someone point me to the IP commands for the HD Max?  I would like to control my unit with iRule and prefer IP.

Thanks,

Nick
