What is the easiest way to get HDDVD ripped onto a HDD if you don't have a HDDVD drive? I have an old Toshiba player but no drive for my computer. I have a few HDDVD's I'd like to rip along with all my BD's.

I would purchase a cheap drive for your PC (look around on eBay). I actually have two BluRay/HDDVD Rom drives and an HDDVD USB Drive (the one for the Xbox360)

I've seen the 8 drive USB limit several places, altough I haven't tried to exceed it. I wonder if the Dunes with the new chip out this year will be able to exceed 8 USB drives?

It looks like I could exceed the 2 TB limit of the internal drive in my Dune Max fairly soon.

I was going to build an unraid server but want to hold off for now. If I plug in an external 2TB eSata drive into the Dune Max, does it just add to total storage or will I need to manage two drives on the Dune?

I am using Zapitti and would like to continue to have it manage everything on the Dune.

Buy an Xbox HDDVD drive on ebay a lot of them there ~ $25 + shipping.
With power adapter and USB to PC. A bit slow but gets the job done.
Will be recognized by XP Vista and Win7.
Does not need the Xbox console.

Correct, I use mine as a spare PC drive for my WHS. It has come in handy on several occasions.

You'll have 2 drives, but that should be invisible using Zapitti. Just add the new movies location, you'll have two locations configured in Zapitti now. When Zapitti starts, it'll scan both locations. Using the Zapitti interface on the Dune, you won't see anything different than you see now. When you select on a movie the Dune will go to the correct HDD, all transparent to the user.

All that said, when you're transferring movies to your Dune from your PC, you'll have to choose which HDD to transfer too. Not a big deal. You can just fill one and then start on the next, or fill 'em evenly. I have 4 drives in a USB enclosure (Mediasonic); I label them A_G, H_M, N_S, T_Z. "Get Smart" goes in A_Z, "X-Men" goes in T_Z, etc. Doesn't really matter though. I've got about 100 blurays loaded and the drives are not quite a third full.

For those who use yaDIS, version 2.0.5 was just released. The significant change, the movie scraper that yaDIS uses (CinePasion) has been down for days now. This latest release removes CinePasion support (temporarily) and adds support for TMDB. This is good news as the use of CinePasion was actually one of the reasons why I would not use yaDIS

Download link : yaDIS 2.0.5

Code:
2.0.5:
    - Added themoviedb.org support
    - Added the choice of the language for the installer (english or french)
    - Added display of real filenames in the list of medias
    - Added several movie formats (aspect ratios)
    - Added in context menu the link to the movie's page on TMDb (on TVDB
      for series)
    - Added Poland language file (thanks to desss)
    - Added the use of the duration reported by MediaInfo (except for DVD/BD
      structures and isos)
    - Updated some language files
    - Fixed no display of 6 and 9 certifications for Netherlands
    - Fixed the exception when the field "First Aired" is empty
    - Removed Ciné-Passion support (temporary)
    - Removed migration of old 1.0 workspaces

What Kirnak said. Also you might want to consider buying an eSata or USB enclosure and buying the HDD separately. That way when you do build a NAS you can easily pull the drive out of the enclosure and put it into your new NAS.

i have recently tried out the ip control app for the dune and find it works well, other than the power button which tends to freeze the unit up whenever i use it. when this happens, the unit stops responding to even the ir remote power button and can only be fixed with a hard reset. so for the time being, i use my iphone to control the dune's main functions and leave the power off either by ir or from the front panel display. also, after setting up zappiti, i find the interface much richer. i know that HDI is going to release a new native GUI in the next firmware, but i wanted to know from the experts here if its possible to have a 3rd party Gui like zappiti develop an ip control app that can actually launch the movie you select stright from your ipad. xbmc has this already as does mymovies for wmc. im not sure if this is possible for 3rd party, but i would think HDI could implement this natively off of their GUI. what is the general consensus on this... doable or not?

oh and one more thing. does anyone know how to easily get bluray coverart using zappiti as opposed to the standard coverart (that doesn't have the blue trim around) to easily distinguish bluray and SD rips? im trying to avoid searching the net for individual coverart that shows the bluray box around the pic.

thanks.

You can try using Stark Covers. It is easy to have it process your library. The PITA though is that you will then have to manually replace each cover in Zappiti that you want to show as "starked"

I have been doing this over the last few weeks with my collection. Digging up Bluray covers, storing them and then uploading in Zappiti. Gives me something to do while the wife watches junk on Netflix that I don't care to see.

Where are you going to plug it in? Unless you meant "external 2TB USB drive" ...

It is certainly possible, and IIRC MyMovies is promising this for a future MyMovies for iPhone/iPad Pro.

Good point, Max does not have an eSata port.

I didn't know that... Glad I got a Smart! Actually not that big a deal, just one possible drive lost. USB still runs Multiple drives on the Max? I still have not been able to find out how many HDDs can be run via USB on the Smart series. I saw 8 somewhere, but I think that was about the Max. Maybe the Smarts are capable of more? Anybody?

Jon Spakeman reply:

go into your router and set up a "reserved IP" or Bind IP to mac address for the dune.

So you would go to the system info page of the dune and write down the mac address some like 00:14:16:A2:01 or whatever it is, then log in to your router and find the LAN setup area and set the reserved IP (netgear verbage), or bind IP to mac address (Draytec verbage), or whatever your rotuer call its. basically tell the router to give your dune (based on its mac address which you will enter), to always be 192.168.1.3 and your printer will get .4 since 3 is in use.

I had to do that with my dunes as when I set the static ip in the dune menu they no longer saw my shares even though they should no problem.

let us know if you cant find that area to set it up in your router. give model and make if you need to.

Could you please reply with information where the settings are to apply the MAC address to a single IP address concerning my listed router. I am not sure if my current router even has this capability.

okay here is a question for all you ripping experts.

i have ripped about 50 of my blurays to iso and all work fine, using anydvd in the background and clown_bd. now i just noticed something funny for sound output. see attachment for what im talking about.

my intention when ripping is to keep a 1:1 copy with sound always being truehd or dts-ma. in this case though, both ac3 and true-hd are selected. so after ripping this, my AVR shows that the audio stream outputting from this file is dolby digital. so does that mean that by me checking the box for both ac3 and true-hd i have the option to toggle sound outputs? and if this is the case and i only want true-hd or dts-ma then deselect ac3 whenever it shows up?

PS. this is not an actual screenshot of my setup, i found it online as its basically the same as mine. only difference is that under "audio" i only have checked off ac3, true-hd and dts-ma. under "output audio format" i only have checked the box saying "unconverted".

Don't check the ac3. This may not always be the correct audio track, in many cases it is directors commentary or other. If you want to have a secondary ac3 track included due so in the audio options below the track selections

Yeah. Basically anything you have checked above will be part of the output file if you have unconverted checked there. Like Damian said, you can convert a lossless track to AC3 by checking the AC3 box too. I usually have a lossless codec and a legacy codec on my files just in case I ever watch on a media player that doesn't have support for the lossless codecs. You can toggle the audio on the Dune by hitting the audio button.

Can anyone with the HD Smart B1 confirm if it can shift subtitles up/down? I'd like to know if you can shift subtitles up/down during DVD, Blu-ray playback in any form (physical disc, ISO, folder, mkv, etc). Does it reset to a default position when a new movie is started, or does it keep the same position until the user changes it?

Background - I'm considering using this to play DVD and Blu-rays (both discs and rips) for a CIH system. I've got a few disks that have subtitles in the black bars and would like to be able to move them into the picture area.

Thanks!
I was unable to shift subtitles on bluray iso's on the Dune but you can shift subtitles on mkv's. For most of my rips, I rip to mkv and there are no issues. On a few others (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for example), I wanted to keep the bluray structure intact so if I chose the chinese track, english subs would automatically appear so I ripped to iso. On that movie, the subs are below the 2.35:1 area so I took the subtitle track and used BDSuptosub and shifted the subtitles to within the 2.35:1 area. Then I created the iso file with the revised subtitle track and it works fine. I also use a CIH set up so this was important to me. I have a D1 though and use an Oppo for physical disk playback. I wouldn't think the B1 would handle physical disks differently than my D1 handles ripped iso's but I could be wrong.

So you're in effect 'remastering' new ISO, with subtitles in a different default position? With the new ISO, do you still have full playback functionality (menus, chapters, etc)? Since I only have a handful of discs with troublesome subtitle position, this sounds like a good workaround.

You can shift PGS subtitles vertically during playback

Could anyone test the attached subtitles and file to see if Dune Smart support
1. Korean .smi subtitle(Dune doesn't support .smi subtitle, does it?)
2. Korean .srt subtitle
3. Korean file name

I've requested this directly to Dune and a couple of Dune retailer in US. Haven't heard back. I really want Dune Smart as my second media player. This is the only thing holding me up.

Thank you in advance.
