Yeah, I'm getting to the Dune late in an effort to upgrade from a PCH A110. The prices still track @ $329.95 for U.S. dealers. However, the GmBh site still lists the D1 @ the old price. I guess since the dust hasn't settled with the Dune (new chip/old chip AND a price increase on the old model) I'll continue using the PCH for awhile. At any rate, U.S. dealers are listing units as backordered anyway.

I have been using an Oppo 93 without any problems. The UI is really basic...only folders. My Oppo will continue to be my reference universal disc player but ISO support has been removed.

1.) will the Dune support 3TB usb drives formatted in NTFS?

2.) The My Movies UI looks like it will serve my needs...do most people use this with Dune players?

3.) Are there parental controls for My Movies--say if I wanted to restrict access to R-rated material?

4.) Can I load My Movies program on an SD card?

5.) Is there a maximum amount of drives you can hook up to the dune?

6.) Are there Harmony One codes for Dune players?

Thanks!

1) I've been checking into this too and as another mentioned, since the last firmare release the 3TB is working with mixed success. Also as another mentioned, I suspect (but don't know) this may be an issue with how the drive is formatted. For me, I'll continue to use the 2TBs until this issue becomes clearer.
5) I'm interested in this too & haven't found ANY concrete documentation on this issue. It appears very few users like me just want to hang a bunch of drives right on the Dune. But that's what I intend to do, starting with an 8 drive tower.

If you are using a special dune skin, try to change to another one. Some skins have problems with special icons and just changing back and forth can correct this problem.

On number 5....

Yes, you can hang multiple drives off the USB side, but be careful. As you get up in drive quantity, the little processor in the Dune needs to manage all of those connections. I would recommend the following to find the limit that works for you.

1) Connect your drives, and I would start with 4.
2) Navigate to a large file on the Dune, and highlight it, but do not hit enter.
3) Press the "I" button on the remote, and run a read test on the file.
4) Note the read speed number as you add drives

You will see as you add drives, this number will go down. I see this first hand, but helping a "friend" with a unit that was having a playback issue revealed he had connected I think his 15th or 16th drive through USB hubs, and started to see BD playback issues. After taking one group of drives off the unit, this stopped. After further investigation, the read test fell into the 5.0 MBps area.

On 3TB support. The internal SATA drives work fine. I have many "friends" who use them. The problems start with some of the USB connected prepackaged external drives. Would your USB drive enclosure work with 3TB drives? Hard to say, but I would like to see your results.

But... really guy... If you have that many movies, I think there are better solutions than USB attached.... I'm just sayin.....

I hope this helps.

Mike's right - you ought to at least check out other options than USB attached drives. If you've got a spare computer and don't mind messing around, UnRaid is worth checking out. If you don't want to bother with that, you can buy really fine NAS boxes from lots of vendors.

I have tried everything I can figure and can't seem to get it to pull the title and icon graphic like it used too. I have done a soft reset on the dune, which didn't help either.

Anyone have this issue setting up Zappitti shortcuts?

i'm surprised you ever had it behaving how it was before, as i've always experienced the same behavior as what you're seeing now. my index is on my server, like yours is now, so perhaps the previous behavior was related to the fact that your index used to be on an internal drive rather than the server. but i agree it doesn't make sense for that to make a difference.

i only use zappiti for tv shows, so just like you, i like to keep a shortcut on the home screen that goes straight into the tv shows folder of zappiti. any shortcut i've ever created (be it zappiti, my movies, or otherwise) has always taken the name of the actual folder the shortcut is pointing to. as for the graphic, mine have always used whatever icon graphic is specified in the dune_folder.txt file for the folder i'm "shortcutting". so when i first created my zappiti tv shows shortcut, it was called "03", just like yours, and it used the giant orange icon from within the zappiti interface.

to get around this, i created a folder called "TV Shows" on the same level as the "03" folder (same level is important so that the relative paths to all of the image files still work), and made a home screen shortcut to that folder, rather than zappiti's. then every time i do a zappiti export, i copy the contents of the "03" folder into the "TV Shows" folder that i created. i also modified the dune_folder.txt of the "TV Shows" folder to use an icon graphic that was more consistent with my overall look, rather than the giant orange zappiti icon. i admit the workaround is a little janky, but it's only a few extra clicks and about 20 extra seconds of time per export. is there a better, more efficient workaround? maybe. this was the first one i tried... it worked so i stuck with it.

for those visually oriented people like myself, here's my basic directory structure (iirc - not at home right now):

Code:
|
|-TV Shows
   |-Dexter
      |-s01e01.mkv
   |-The Office
      |-s01e01.mkv
|-Zappiti
   |-_Zappiti
      |-01
      |-02
      |-03
         |-<<gibberish folder for each series>>
   |-TV Shows
      |-TV Shows (shortcut points here)
         |-<<copy of each gibberish folder for each series>>
   |-<<zappiti images folder (can't remember it's name)>>
EDIT: fwiw, i originally did my testing on this and created my shortcuts like 10 firmwares ago. i've never had to recreate them so i have no idea if newer firmwares handle shortcut creation differently.

I hear you & thank you for the comments. I'm using a 8 tower Sans Digital now with four drives in use currently not enclosures. I ONLY fire the (PCH currently) up ~ twice a week currently & only on 1 TV. So I have room to grow with the tower but yes, I will need/should be looking into a NAS eventually. By the way, any recommendations on NAS box?

Yes on custom icons. But the old version was as well. Are you strong your Zappiti output on network attached storage or local on the Dune?

The differences in my system are:
- moved Zappiti storage from local USB to unRAID
- upgraded to new Zappiti latest release, completely rebuilt database form scratch.
- formatted system storage clean and hard reset the Dune.

Everything is stored on my WHS (including my Zappiti jukebox), and I am using the Zappiti skin for my Dune

Will give that a shot thursday night when I am back home. Do I recreate the short us to or just change the background back and forth?

TBH, I am not sure if/how well Synology works with attached storage (that is not Synology). I think there are some synology guys here who may know. I have not personally used Synology, but everyone I have talked to who uses it has always had nothing my positive things to say (to the point where if I was in the market for a NAS I would strongly consider).

I am very happy with unRAID. Very flexible, good up to 20 drives, need to be pretty "techy" to do this. It's not overly complicated but I definitely wouldn't call it plug and play.

That leaves me out then!

Don't underestimate yourself. My previous computer building experience was limited to installing a wireless card in a PC. I only used computers for work, the odd excel or word doc at home and internet surfing. I had never seen or thought about Linux. In other words, I knew next to nothing about computers.

Yet I was able to build a 20 drive box pretty easily following one of the builds on the limetech forum. I've been using my unraid server for a bit over a year now and couldn't be happier.

Agree. Like I said its not overly complicated, but you have to "want" to do it.

It's not just buying a box, dropping in a drive and turning it on.

I'm using an NetGear ReadyNAS Ultra and it works well and was easy to setup. The only thing I wish it did was encrypt my data. For that reason I'm looking at QNAP boxes, such as http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=162. Unfortunately they cost a fair bit more than the ReadyNAS.

Here's something you may wish to read:

Just change the skin to another and go back to the first one. I already had the same thing from time to time with the yadis icon and doing this solved the problem (it seems to happen when you just upgraded your firmware...)
Thanks for all the helpful comments yesterday. You've all given me things to learn for future storage/streaming needs. Since I already have a tower which serves my needs today, I'll use it while I'm developing a future strategy as well as saving $s for that next step. Sigh. Meanwhile, the first part (the Dune D1) remains backordered.

Very good thread.

I anticipate these prices will hold firm through the rest of 2012 (my prices went up too).

I am planning to convert blu-ray folder structure content into single ISO file. Most of the movies are complete movies and few of them are movie only. I will use imgburn to create ISO file out of all these.

Let me know any pros and cons. I am doing for consistency since I have mix of folders and isos. I have plan in future to use NAS, but now everything is on 2tb external hard drives.

I use all ISO's (a few MkV's) and have no playback issues I can tie to the ISO format. A few movies have a skip here or there but it's rare am don't think this is due to ISO format. However I recently read that Zappiti will correctly read into folder structures and determine framerate, formats, and other tech data that it never seems to get right. I have not tested this.
I too was using only BD ISOs... but realized that BD Folder structure was and is the way to go if you want programs like Zappiti and yaDIS to read resolution, framerate, audio codec, HD audio type, aspect ratio, video codec, and disc type.

The same data will have to be manually entered if ISO format is used with these programs

but strangely enough Zappiti and yaDIS can both read the tech data of DVD ISOs... but not BD ISOs.

I highly recommend yaDIS!
Hoping for an answer/workaround...

My BD files are currently setup in a folder structure... i.e...Movie Name>BDMV>Stream>...

I have a Pioneer Kuro KRP-500m which is best suited to be playing content at RGB 16-235 (RGB-Limited on Dune). This is not currently possible with BD Folders... but is if you simply play the the BDMV folder one directory deeper... 16-235 works perfectly ?!?!?!

Is there something so different about the BD Route Folder as apposed to the BDMV folder inside it?

I would gladly use just the m2ts file... but I would really prefer to use the OSD / remote control features of the route BD Folder.

Thanks

It's been a while since I looked at them, but does yaDIS do TV shows well?

I wish I had known that, would have set up differently.

My DVD ISO's all come out PAL or 576P even though they are NTSC.

I love yaDIS... and hopefully will never have to go back to Zappiti.

The is an easy way to convert your BD ISOs to folder structure... which I will post next... but since you asked about yaDIAS... I thought I would share some screenshots.

Here is the home screen of yaDIS: I customized it with a Pioneer logo.

here is where you chose the specific tv show:

here is where you choose the season of that show:

you then choose the episode you want to watch:

Here is (IMO the best feature of yaDIS) the search options of yaDIS:

Here is the "All Movies" selection:

Here is a Saga selection from "All Movies":

And here is the individual movie selection from the saga:

I love yaDIS... it is free and very easy to use!

I have yet to find a place to actually download the Yadis software that works. The few times I tried it crashed my computer and or the instructions were in French. Can you point me in the direction of a link? The last time I tried was from MPC Club website.
