Not for nothing. If you need to obsess, it's not a bad thing to obsess about.

There is something to be said for not doing conversions unnecessarily. Although I'm sure Dune does the conversion correctly, that doesn't mean it's necessary. And why burn HDMI bandwidth for nothing?

I believe the reason Dune does it this way is that the Sigma SDK is coded to accommodate the maximum color-sampling without having to renegotiate HDMI when the sampling is less than 4:4:4.

Going to go get some Excedrin now...

Sorry. Hope your head feels better.

EDIT: Looking back, I guess I just contradicted myself. The subject I used was "Nothing wrong with . . .", but "Nothing damaging with . . ." would have been more accurate, as an unnecessary conversion could be considered "wrong".

Not all BluRay players do it correctly
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/techn...roduction.html

My Panasonic does
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/blu-r...r.html?start=3

And what does my WHS sent to the Dune according to MediaInfo

Frame rate : 23.976 fps
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.473
Stream size : 25.9 GiB (84%)
Color primaries : BT.709-5, BT.1361, IEC 61966-2-4, SMPTE RP177
Transfer characteristics : BT.709-5, BT.1361
Matrix coefficients : BT.709-5, BT.1361, IEC 61966-2-4 709, SMPTE RP177

after a rip to BDMV with DVDFab for 2012

In Source Direct, the only alteration made to the data is a conversion from 4:2:0 color space to 4:2:2

ah, beautiful, there's the answer to "what am i missing?" i never knew that displays (i assume that includes vp's too) can't accept 4:2:0.

on a more dune related note... thinking about how i'd like to go back to voting for a source direct mode, did anyone else notice that they took the features voting page down all together?

According to Mike at duneplayer... Source Direct is not going to be an option... At least with current chipsets. He said it was tried... And it was a major disaster!

And even though the new Dune Pro says it has source direct as an option in its specs... No Dune Pros have yet to be produced.

Just another observation.
I connected my HP Notebook HDMI to the Duo and tested with 2012 from the WHS which MediaInfo reports as 4:2:0

Tested with MPCHC, Win7 Media Center, Arcsoft total theater platinum, Windows Media Player and Power DVD 10 and Jriver Media Center.
In each case the Duo reports the input as RGB and the output to my display as YCrCb 4:4:4 which is what the Duo is set to do.

None of these report the incoming colorspace, even MPCHC which has the most complete view options.

The HP has the IntelHD graphics and the AMD graphics processor. This test was run with the AMD.

So make of this what you will.

Could someone point me in the right direction - when I play blu-ray disc folders through Zappiti it doesn't resume from where I last left off. Is there any way I can enable this? I've got system storage set up.

That's a good question. I haven't tried that yet so I am not sure if it works. However, I would suggest sending a PM to dbone, and he should have an answer for you.

Unless, he reads this first and answers it for you as well.

I think that if you want to be able to resume a BR you need : full rip with menus AND a BR that allows resuming. From what I understood, being able to resume a Br is not a problem from the player but from the disc allowing/not allowing it...
That's right. The disc itself has to enable a resume feature. That is the way it is for blu ray players as well so it is not Dune or media player specific.

Is there a way to build the resume feature into our rips using BD authoring software?

It is technically possible. Theoretically, if you're doing movie-only ISO/folder rips like ClownBD does, it could add the necessary logic to the BD structure.

I believe it's tsmuxer that creates the BD structure, which unfortunately is not open source and no longer maintained. So it looks unlikely that it will happen any time soon.

I smell a compelling new feature for DVDFab...

Fab does have a BD making tool. I have not checked it out yet. I put all my movies in MKV structure.

My Popcorn Hour C200 could resume any blu-ray rip. I've just enabled BD-Lite on the Dune and does resume but there are other problems with using BD-Lite such as forced subs not working.

That's a deal-breaker for BD-Lite for me.

Interesting about the C200. I know there are some complex BD-J discs that make resume difficult for the player to do automatically. With a simple BD rip like ClownBD makes, it's evidently possible for the player to do it.

I would love to see such a feature on the Dune, but I'm not holding my breath.

I tried enabling BD-Lite on my Dune... Still no resume on BDs.

That's interesting... The auto resume seems to work reliably on my D1 in BD-Lite mode. It always remember where I left off, viewing my BD ISOs. BD-Lite, as mentioned before, has its shortcomings (no forced subtitles, no proper rewind functionality), but the auto resume is one of my favorite features in that mode. Do you have local storage on your Dune?

I am using an 8Gb thumb drive.. I also don't like the fact that I have to press the "Enter" button twice for the movie to actually start playing.

Are there any rip requirements for BD-Lite to work. I am ripping my BDs with Clown BD, with no menus whatsoever... maybe this is why?

Thanks

I rip mine with DVDFab (movie only), but I don't see why this should make a difference
I agree with you that the double Enter is annoying.

I am using the thumb drive as my yaDIS location... I will add another thumb drive for system storage only... maybe that will help.

What are the pros of using BD Lite with BDs that are ripped with Clown BD for main movie only?

If FAB ripping allows for BD Resume... does it require BDF-Lite to be enabled...

I use AnyDVD just for its decryption power... nothing else ClownBD does the bulk of the work... If I were to aquire FAB which version should I get to enable BD Resume on all my rips?

Thanks

I believe you need to have system storage installed for the auto resume to work. There's probably nothing wrong with your ripping methodology using ClownBD.

Based on my observations, the pros of using BD-Lite are the auto resume feature, and the ability to zoom when viewing ISOs.

EDIT: I've also noticed that the movies load faster in BD-Lite mode, whereas an HDMI handshake is negotiated when playing them in full-BD, delaying the start of the movie by a few seconds (on my system, at least.)

Why would you want to zoom?

I rarely use it, but sometimes I zoom to 1:2 on 1:2.35 movies. I listed it as a "pro" simply because you have the *option* to use it, whereas the zoom doesn't seem to be available in full-BD mode on ISOs.

Surprising I read through all their BD player and Receiver reviews with the HDMI benchmark data and 1/2 of them have color space conversions issues of some sort. some were quite severe. Its nice to see Cambridge produce a reference BD player that competes with the Oppo and sad to see McIntosh sell a huge under performer of a BD player.

Part 2 was even more interesting:

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/techn...follow-up.html

for now in the media streamer space there is nothing close to the top tier physical players like the oppo or cambridge it appears. no big surprises here.

It seems to me you're comparing apples and oranges. For their cost, convenience, and features I'd rather use a Dune for media streaming and a Blu-Ray player for playing Blu-Rays.The fact that Blu-Ray players are beholden to the rules such as 'No ISO files' and DRM games such as Cinavia and Region Codes means they don't make great media players. At least that is my experience.

The only thing I really wish Dune didn't do is scale videos, but honestly I never notice anything glaringly wrong. Perhaps that is because my VP cleans things up and does the proper color space conversion.
I finally tested the "remember where I left off" feauture, and my Dune remembers where I left off. Even my AIOS media player does it as well.
