New Dune HD Max and HD Smart anticipation thread Q3 2010 - Page 319

Finally I have my 303D, my first transfer tests are poor.

Internal ext3 formatted DISK
My network is 100mbps (NO Gigabit)

SMB download 4.5MB
SMB upload 3.7MB

FTP download / upload 7.5MB

Testing with http://jell.yfish.us/ videos

Internal disk: Jellyfish-120-Mbps.mkv (PERFECT)
Jellyfish maximum SMB-30-Mbps.mkv
Jellyfish maximum DLNA-60-Mbps.mkv

The most important bug is that if you turn off the WIFI from the menu, really continuous radio broadcasts, and if you have the router / AP to hand, make noise and packet loss in the network.

I open the telnet service to check it really does not load the WiFi module (8192cu.ko), but still continue to emit.

On the other hand I have no way to activate the application Torrent.

Sounds like your transfer speeds is an issue with your network (100). I have a gigE and have no issues playing I think up to the 110Mbps jellyfish and Planet Earth scene over SMB to theTV303d.

I don't use wireless so I can't confirm the issue you noted

Hi Damian!
I think it is not a good performance. In my same network (100Mbps), a transfer between two windows by samba PC is 10-11MB / s.

A transfer of 3-4MB / s uses only 30% of the bandwidth of a network of 100Mbps.

On applications and pluggins, can you tell me? no torrent, no youtube ..

Thanks!!

Damian, did you continue to test and watch more movies muxed with DTS-HDMA on your TV303D?

Unfortunately no, I spent much of the week out of town for work. My goal is to try and complete testing this weekend so I can put together the review next week. As of now from when I tested DTS(MA) played fine and TrueHD played fine so far (one mkv, Star Trek, for whatever reason the TV303D is having a hard time playing)

Honestly I don't think you can use transfers between two PCs as a comparison to a transfer on one of these media players, completely different hardware, etc... Transfer speeds for me are always a lot slower going to a media player then transfer speeds I get going from one PC to another.

I didn't dig into the app/plugin section yet to see what was available, but I will try to take a look tomorrow.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to set up NFS with the Dune, I have never been able to get it to work. I have NFS set up on my WHSv1 machine, no issues accessing it from my other media players (Mede8er and PCH). The NFS Server doesn't show in the network browser. I hit the pop up button to manually create a new network shortcut, enter in the information, but when I go to access I get an error message "Something about network folder not existing".

Got most of my testing on the 303D done but wanted to do a few checks over NFS (used SMB)

Hi Damian,
I test on gigabit and get 25MB / s / 208Mbits approx. That does not even reach 30% efficiency of a 1Gbps network.
Same thing happens on a network of 100Mbits. about 30-40% efficiency.

That is probably the speed I would expect with these media players tbh. I think this is just in part a hardware limitation of the media players (especially when comparing against a PC). EVen on a PC you won't come anywhere near 100% efficiency

My new results are spectacular, on a 100Mbps network. (the problem was the router).

Who said these processors could not exploit a 100Mbps Ethernet network old!

About FTP / DLNA efficiency of 95% of a network of 100Mbits.
About SAMBA efficiency of 70% of a network of 100Mbits.

SAMBA 64Mbits / 8MB
FTP 95Mbits / 11MB aprox

With the test videos:

DLNA -> Jelly fish 80Mbits
SAMBA -> Jelly fish 55Mbits

Impressive.

You could try giving this a shot.

I'm interested to read your review of the 303d as I'd like to replace my WDTV Live with something a little more robust.
I just tested by NFS and the results are awesome!

NFS 11MB / s 88Mbits. (with the DUNE TEST)

Summarizing actual streaming with Jelly files:

In 100Mbs ethernet:

JELLY SAMBA 55Mbps
JELLY NFS 70Mbps
JELLY DLNA 80Mbps

in gigabit

NFS 32MB / s
SMB 25MB / s

Impressive as many NAS market would achieve these values, and why in theory is specific processor for video.

Thanks. Pretty sure I used the IP address for the NFS share and it didn't work, but I will reconfirm. No biggie if I can't get it to work. NFS works on every other player I have so don't want to start messing around with the settings on my server.

Should still be on pace to have my TV303D review up by the end of the week

Only tested SMB but I can confirm your results over gigE (as well get 100Mbps Jelly over smb)

np. I use the haneWIN nfs server with my WDTV box so hopefully I won't have issues if I decide to go with the Dune.

How does the video playback quality compare between the TV303D and the 1000x3d for 720p and 480p source material? I'm going to upgrade from a WDTV Live and was wondering if it's worth waiting for the Dune to start shipping.

Thanks

I did that and after awhile same hdd is lost. So, it is related to the particular hdd.
It is still very odd because the two drives are the same model. Maybe this one is defective somehow.

Did you test 7.1 output via HDMI in both bitstream and PCM? I think the full sized units are the only ones capable of 7.1 while the smaller units are 5.1 only.

I don't have a 7.1 setup so I didn't check. I will see as I should be able to tell from my AVR display though if 7.1ch is being sent through, just need to grab a few movies that I know have 7.1

dbone1026,

You wouldn't happen to have an ETA for the firmware that can enable the Dune to boot up to Zappiti?biggrin.gif

Not sure. It will be in the next fw update, so hopefully soon. It is a great feature!

Great review, thanks! Will you also get a base 3D to review? Or will it be pretty much close to the 303D?

3D ISO and BD folder structure is key for me, do you think waiting for the Max/Intel unit would be better for me as i wouldn't have to use BDLite? Thanks!

They are not strange, he just modified / edited them.

Not sure why they look weird, those are the Xener transparent png icons (I have been using them with Media Browser for a while)
I guess that you didn't change anything in zappiti compared to your usal Dune and you're just using the same export folder. Right ? So on your smart, those icons look normal (Xener only, no default icon behind), but here it looks weird.

Could be the same problem than the system clock that you can't remove and which always visible even when you use yadis or duneX.

Didn't change anything. That screenshot is exactly how it looks on my Dune and on my PC.
so there's a problem because I think you should have the same display than GusGus (BTW : he also have this weird double icon problem on the main menu, but his icons are twice the same, just look closer to his first screenshot).

Did you have the same thing on your Smart or is it new on the 303D only ?

I would also like to know this. A review on possibly the zappiti player or dune max 3d(when it comes out)?

I should be getting a Base3D hopefully in the next few weeks when it is available, and will do a similar review. I doubt I would get the Zapp player as it is just nothing more then the Base3D with Zappiti on top (which with the auto launch feature you get the same effect on the Base3D). If something radically different comes out with the Zapp player I would get for a review.

Also, I will definitely get my hands on a Max if/when it finally arrives (thinking not until Q3 this year)

As far as 3D ISO and BD folder structure, hard to answer. If Dune is able to fix the seamless branch and forced subtitle bugs then the Base3D/TV303D would be great for 3D ISO and BD folder structure. Until then you will have to deal with those issues. Since the Max still revolves around a lot of speculation I can't say yet how well it will work

Awesome thanks!

Also in the review of the 303D, you mention a patch to decode DTS-HD MA to multi channel PCM. I believe this patch decodes the DTS core and so you don't get HD audio multichannel PCM. Major bummer for those without receivers that decode HD audio. At least according to this post from another forum...
