Is there a spec on that cable? We beta testers were not provided with one. Can it be purchased at say a Radio Shack or Best Buy?

The cable is a standard multifunction phone plug that you are seeing in many new devices on the market. It is not a standard stereo mini phone plug though so you wont find it at Radio Shack. The cable will come with the unit so unless you need an extra don't kno why you would to get it at retail?

Did we confirm whether Netflix will be supported now or in the near future? It's rather nebulously listed on the website.

is walmart going to carry these?
Someone said they saw something like that.

I hope they get them first, I will stop on the way home and get one on that day.

Thanks. As I stated, the "official" beta testers did not receive one with their units.

Thanks for your input in this thread. I'm wondering if there has been anything interesting done, or noticeable fixes or speed improvements, in the recent (or today's) firmware update? I doubt it, since they must be packaging and prepping for launch by now.

I was really considering the BoxeeBox, but I think i'll go with this. I won't have to convert my BD ISOs to MKVs, and I know what I'm getting with this box. I think the BoxeeBox and GoogleTV will eclipse this eventually, but the NTV550 sounds good right now.

There was a new beta last night. Mostly bug fixes. They did add RadioTime favorites as I had requested.

Bug fixes are good. Even if it doesn't make it into the shipping unit, it should be on the website soon afterwards for updating. I would presume there is an auto-update feature.

Looks like they will be sold at all the major retailers. http://www.netgear.com/wheretobuy/online-stores/

Wonder if they will beat boxee to the market? Since both are $199 it probably will matter imho.
Interesting. My take is that GoogleTV and Boxee are competing in the same vague space, whereas this is competing more with traditional media players such as Dune and Popcorn Hour.

Any reason why SMP8642 can't support a Webkit browser and make Neotv 550 more featured on the internet content front ?

I don't believe that page is specific to any product.

does this do 23.976Hz AND 24.000Hz?

Well that link was found on the web page for the 550. Hope it's real...

What a great new player with a great interface! Thx to everyone for the helpful contributions. If it really delivers what is stated at NETGEAR NeoTV 550 (NTV550) Review this most likely will be my next toy to replace the BD-1 units (quite sadly, HDX still has not been able to deliver a properly working firmware).

Would any of the beta testers here care to comment on how accurate or otherwise that review actually is? It sounds like the ideal player to me but for all I know the review was written by a netgear employee and could be a pack of lies

No disrespect to the author and all that but it just sounds to good to be true

As far as I know, robkwil is the only beta tester on this forum. I'll let him speak for himself, but from what he's told us, everything in the review seems accurate to me.

Edit: and I'll also add that I cancelled my boxeebox order because of this box. Google tv and boxee box are coming out soon, but we don't really know what we are getting with those yet. They have more potential than this box, but at least we know what we are getting (aside from Internet content, but I'm assuming netflix is coming soon) with the 550.

FYI, Netgear's website is now taking pre-orders for the 550. The confirmation email I received suggested a target release date of October 31.
People who ordered about 3 weeks ago got the same message. So, they haven't updated their internal ship dates in a while. I guess that means that Oct. 31 is either accurate or the best case scenario. I would think they would know if they were shipping in <3 weeks.

Thanks for the update!

Online stores in france and uk have it listed as november release so Oct. 31 is probable I think.
For me it's a toss up between the boxee rf remote/pretty interface and the netgear fanless design/bd support.

That's interesting. I've periodically checked their website and each time I have looked it sayd 'out of stock'. This was the first time I saw it say 'available for pre-order'. I guess they've intermittently allowed pre-orders, just not when I was looking!

I'd give it a 99% accuracy rating. The one mistake I found was "Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to edit these playlists from the UI once you've created them. Nor can you add a whole album to the playlist with a singe click, you have to add each track individually."

All you have to do is highlight the album and press PLAY.

And since his review, RadioTime is now supported and working great.

On a side note, the last firmware released to the beta testers was tagged as GM1, not beta. So I assume this is what the units will ship with on Oct. 31

Thanks, that's encouraging. 99% accurate is more than enough for me.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does the GM in GM1 stand for?

general motors?

...or Gold(en) Master, the final pre-release version of a piece of software/firmware that barring catastrophic circumstances will be bit-for-bit identical with what actually ships.

When will Netflix be supported? When might we have the details of what the support will include? November?

Thank you for the info. Can we assume the user manual will be available on-line when the units start to ship?

Hi Bob,

Good to see Netgear on here helping with the information about the new box. Will the orders that were placed online with netgear.com be honored before or at the same time as Frys and Amazon? My order went in Sept 12

Is that something official? Would it also apply to Canada.

First of all: Thank you very much for being here, very much appreciated! IMO the best thing a company can do do get in close contact with their customers.
