Thanks for the reply.

What tool(s), preferably free, do you recommend to accomplish this task?

It should be noted that the Updates posted at the above address are not the official Beta FW.

They are more like Alpha Builds intended for internal testing only.

Official Beta FW is posted at the Netgear Beta Forum, here:

Netgear NeoTV 550 Beta Forum

Just a heads up, especially for new users.

I recently switched from a Patriot Box Office to the Neotv 550. The Neotv recognizes an external 2TB USB hard drive as an optical device. It works fine with the PBO and various computers. All of my other external drives work fine with the Neotv. Just the drive manufactured by Cavalry is getting recognized incorrectly. Does anyone know of a solution?

Hello, new user, was using boxee, can't quite figure out the initial setup. I have all my BD rips on 2 external drives (ripped with DVDFAB, folder format)...The neo finds my 2 external drives, but that's about it- last night it was letting me browse the folders, but wasn't playing the movie, would just go deeper in the folder...today it prompts me for a location to save when I try to go into the folders...a scan results in finding nothing...thanks for any help, probably just missing something simple!

Are you pressing the Play button when on a folder name that contains the BDMV and CERTIFICATE subfolders?

A sad day for my NeoTV. I finally gave up on it because of the lack of streaming support in favor of a 1st Gen Apple TV running Crystalbuntu. So far, the 30 second skip is a godsend. If NetGear could have added the features they promised, I wouldnt have to bail on them. Oh well.

Good luck with this awesome hardware, and the mind numbing software.

This is our final take on the Netgear NTV550:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5129/2...-the-boxee-box

Awesome hardware and build, but let down by unstable firmware. I am not hoping for any more improvements.. Netgear, do you want to surprise us with some updates?

I think we all agree that the state of the art of media players is not good if you want just a single device to do local and streaming. The conclusion is, for now, you have to buy two devices. What two do you recommend? Netgear NeoTV 550 and a Roku 2 XS?

Not sure I entirely agree with that. My WDTV Live does most of what I want for both local and streaming functionality in a single device.

I was originally interested in the 550 from the perspective of it's BluRay playback abilities. But the remaining issues currently outstanding caused me to shy away from this option.

I agree with your conclusion, for now, you have to buy two devices, one for local playback and one for online content. May be boxee box for local playback(but right now cannot play back hd audio perfectly, but you can downmix it or use alternate sound track available) and Roku 2 XS for online content.

I guess I'm in the same boat, trying to make a recommendation for my brother. For me, I have 2 NTV550's. I was considering recommending a NTV550 or the WDTV Live for my brother but I'm a little concerned about the NTV550 with the lack of focus to fix things. My brother may use the NTV550 in different ways than I so I don't want him to face problems. He will want it for local playback mostly.

popbox is also fine for playing local content. 130+tax

This is from popbox forum.

v8 now available in the US, which is what I would expect since the 3D is no longer being developed.

Completely on the mark! Very happy with the NTV550 so far...wish it got a few more updates to iron (few) remaining issues and make it even more stable. The remote is such a pleasure to use over all other competition, including the Dune. Boxee remote plain sucks!

Thats the way I went too. NTV550 for local, but WD TV Live Plus for streaming. Roku has more channels, but the WD had better quality of video for Netflix (slight but noticeable to me). WD also had the option for local streaming if move to another room temporarily. I miss Amazon on it though.

Netgear also released the NTV200 for streaming. Reviews seem promising so far, but does not have Netflix 5.1 or subtitles and Amazon is missing too. Wish these get added soon!

I just don't get people who bitch about the remotes!! I can't believe that anyone that uses a media player does not have a decent universal one!
But, that's just me I guess...

Yep, just you...maybe a (very) few others. Have you actually tried the Boxee remote? It's RF and so does not work with my non-RF Harmony. I am also refering to the fact that the remote allows easy access to Audio / Subtitles / Aspect etc. Boxee needs too many key presses for that, not to mention difficult to use in dark.

LOL...well said! And even though I have a $90 Harmony (for a few years now), I actually prefer and use the universal and learning remote than came with my Onkyo 707 receiver. Go figure!
And I didn't like the 550 remote, I kind of like the boxee remote, and otherwise use my harmony 890. This is all personal preference, and I don't think any of us know who the minority are. We probably all are.

Actually I have the same issue. What type of SDHC Card are you using? Mine is Patriot 4GB Class 6 SDHC card. Tried on firmware version 3.0.325 and 3.0.335.
I've tried both FAT32 and EXT3 (formatted by Neo) formats, but somehow it won't work normally with SDHC card - not for movie wall and the same with actual Bluray movies that have BD menu.
As for movie wall - it behaves strangely - each time i cleared the library and formatted the card it behaved differently. Few times as you describe - it was picking one of folder.jpg files to display all "unknown" folders with that image. Another time it simply could not load all images in cache - the second row in each folder was without cover arts, although they were all specified. Lastly, I do open each folder by folder and it shows everything correct (all movie wall covers) when it reaches a certain limit and then it cannot show more covers and even already viewed ones disappear randomly - only a standard folder icon is shown. Really pisses me off
As for BD menu - it also had different glitches. One time it managed to open the Bluray movie with all menus, but everywhere it was showing some pink lines in front of image (in menus, in playback, etc.). The last time i tested, it simply hung on opening the same BD file menu.
For now, I have attached a USB drive to the back port and use it as a cache location and BD menu cache. Works just fine and smooth for all of the above. Just as supposed to.. But it is not a normal solution. I mean, WTF.. how is it come that normal SDHC card simply does not work on the device?
Btw, I checked and tested this very SDHC card on my laptop with special software - it found no errors, passed all tests. I also recorded media (photos, movie) to this card and it all played fine on Neo. Only the fact remains - that it DOES NOT WORK WITH CACHE (nor image cache, nor BD menu cache). Are there any solution to this? I tried to search but no luck. I seriously want this to be fixed

I too have been pulling out my hair on this issue. I believe I've found a solution. The secret is to reboot the NeoTV to clear in-memory cache.

1. In Settings -> Audio / Video -> Playback Options screen, change Image Cache to (none).
2. In Settings -> Media Locations screen, Clear Library.
3. Reboot
4. In Settings -> Audio / Video -> Playback Options screen, change Image Cache to SD cartridge and insert a freshly formatted (FAT(32)) SD.
5. In Settings -> Media Locations screen, Scan for media.
6. In Video -> All video(s) -> paging through the movie list will put them in cache permanently.

Looks like a major bug in video wall.

I am thinking about buying this.

Does the NTV550 suppport the playback of blu rays via BDMV folders?

Does it support NTFS external HDD's?

Does it support playback of BDMV folders from those NTFS external HDD's?

And finally, if you use it to playback BDMV folders, and it is connected to your AVR via HDMI, will it bitstream hd audio (DTS MA/ True HD, I don't want the NTV550 to decode, just to passthrough this audio to the AVR)?

Everything I've read seems to suggest the answer is yes to all of these questions, but (especially) playback of BDMV folders isn't something I can easily find the answer to as to this device. Thanks!!

Thanks! I've ordered this and am going to give it a shot. For my needs, I could care less about networking issues, netflix or other type services on the box, etc.

Just need it to play BDMV folder movies on an NTFS external HDD and pass video via HDMI and audio via HDMI to AVR (DTS MA/ True HD or in the case of some of my older blu rays, uncompressed PCM).

Downstairs in our living room we have our HTPC which does the blu ray ripping, which I like to rip to folders. Using that HTPC, we watch with TMT software.

But in our home theater, all we have is PS3 and 360, and they are horrible for such playback. We thought of even buying another HTPC for the HT, but it seems like a waste to spend so much on a computer for simply one function. (We even used to lug up upstairs our HTPC to watch stuff off of it and then bring it back down, but that is such a pain) I was thinking there HAS to be a way to play these files without a full blown comptuer, and sure enough, looks like I have found the solution. Thanks again.

I was having a lot of problems with choppy playback when using MKV files with 3.2.16 Installing the 3.2.22 test firmware seems to have resolved the issue.

I'm looking for a media player to play local content from a USB drive and can play MKV files that have HD audio tracks (both dolbyHD and DTS-HD). I'm not worried about streaming any videos/movies or using services like Netflix.

I currently have the original WDTV media player and it works ok but is having trouble playing some of my MKV files. I have to remux them quite often.

All I plan to do is jack the hard drive in with my movies stored in individual folders and play them through my Onkyo receiver and Vizio TV.

Would the NeoTV 550 do the job?

Thanks!
Shane

Assuming they are straight forward MKV files the NEO should be just fine. What are you using to create them?

Hey guys,

I'm on the fence about buying this device but before actually doing that I'd be very happy if someone could answer my question.
I would use the NTV550 with my hdtv (via hdmi) and my Logitech Z-5500 (via optical).
I know that the Z-5500 can't decode Dolby True HD or DTS-HD.
If used in combination with my Blu-ray player it would just put out a 5.1 dts or dd mix if the source was Dolby True HD 5.1/ 7.1 or DTS-HD 5.1/ 7.1, since I could adjust all of this via the settings of the Blu-ray Player. Now if I connected the NTV550 to the Z-5500 via a digital optical cable would it do the same thing?
I just don't want it to end up putting out 2.1 or, in the worst case, nothing at all if the source is DTS-HD / Dolby True HD 5.1 or 7.1.

In this review http://www.anandtech.com/show/5129/2...he-boxee-box/6 it is stated that the NTV550 can actually decode all these formats, so it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Yes, just set Audio Output to SPDIF (Decode). You will get 5.1 for TrueHD and DTS-HD and other AC3 / DTS audio tracks. However, please note that DTS-HD LBR (usually a component of PiP / BonusView audio tracks) will not be playable in your system because NTV550 doesn't have decode support for that codec.

Thank you for your answer, jakmal! That sure sounds good. Unfortunatley, or should I say fortunately, I just read about the region lock which really kills it for me, since it completely destroys the advantage of playing Blu-ray ISOs with full menu, if the menu is "set" to a different region.

Edit: Or is there a possibility now, to get rid of the region lock, or reset the region changes for good?
