And price was nice (80$ on amazon) but now when I need to buy it (because my friend returns from his journey) prices gone mad, 229$ on amazon.....I mean WTF? ((

Does anyone recommend cheap alternative?
Or does NTV 550 have a successor? My guess is it will be cheaper, because the only clue I have for that price is that NTV 550 is dropped by netgear and there are not so many left on market.

Any ideas what to buy for around 100$?

Thanks

You might want to ask aaronwt. He bought one and does not like it and is using a-400 now.

Thanks for response guys.
I'm curious, the alternatives you mentioned, I mean cheap ones......do they have the same great fie support? and how picture quality is comparable to NTV 550?

********************
I searched for models you mentioned and have a question about WDTV, there is WDTV Media Player and WDTV HD Media Player. Price difference between them is 150$, but what is real difference? WDTV Media player for just 70$ also plays 1080p content......what else could "HD" mean in WDTV HD Media Player?

wdtv (I had several) does not play DTS-HD and does not do bluray menus. I think it does DVD menus now.

Hi,

I've had my NTV550 for a few months now and I'm pretty happy with it. I recently bought a 3TB Seagate Backup Plus desktop drive to replace my old smaller WD drive; however, the NTV550 just wouldn't recognize it, both the front and back USB ports. The Seagate drive does power up and the LED lights up when I connect it to the NTV550 though.

Does anyone have similar issue? I've tried upgrading my firmware but it says I have the latest.

Thanks

I recently bought a WD Elements Desktop 3 TB, and of course NTV wouldn't recognise it. I just make two partitions on HDD, and everything works fine. I use Windows Disk Management only, not some partitioning software.

NTV recognise discs (partitions) not bigger than 2TB.

I got wd 3tb working following this:
Two tools that I recommend:
1) Easeus Partition Master Home Edition. It's free to home users and it is a quality product.

2) WDQuickFormatter.exe v1.2.0.3 .The key was to put v1.2.0.3 version exe in the SAME folder as the original WD quick formatter folder.

Using Easeus, I checked the properties of the working drive.
Bytes per sector: 512 and not 4096, then only it will work. 512 bytes per sector seems to be the magic number
Bytes per cluster: 4096

Does the latest firmware still support full BD- iso menus? Anything else I should look out for when purchasing one of these boxes?

I'm looking for something to play my .ISO files in my bedroom and family room. Bedroom has an older HTIB Sony that plays dd/dts but no HD audio. And the family room is just HDMI to TV.

I have no problems with full BD Menus on my .iso files. There have been no firmware updates since I got mine about 2 years ago. Firmware version s 3.2.16NA.

Internet Streaming has never worked, but that is not why I brought it.

One thing that I have done to improve reliability is to set all audio formats to bit streaming and letting my AVR do the decoding. Before I did this I found that some audio formats were not bring decoded properly by the N550.

Good to hear. Going to order one now. smile.gif

If I rip 1:1 bluray rips and set to bitstreaming (which I prefer in my theater) then my stereo tv, and my avr that doesn't do HD audio will work, right?

just ordered one for 178.00 shipped. Not the best price, but the best price at the moment. Not to mention full BD ISO menus are a dying breed.

The million dollar question, can you return it in case it doesn't work?

Yes. Got it on Amazon.

There is another one new in box. For almost 400.00. eek.gif

Gosh I hope mine never breaks down. Will be screwed. Nothing on the market compares with it in terms of price and functionality. Aarron, hold onto yours in case I need it one day!

I paid 178 for mine. If it doesnt do what I want its good to know I can get my money back.

Items are worth what a buyer is willing to pay and a seller is willing to sell. wink.gif

I'm not so sure. I paid $80 for my 550, and in many ways, it is better than my Smart D1, which I paid a lot more for. It's as good as the Dune for Blu-Rays, and far superior for music (it's now my primary music player). I might pay up to $200 if I needed to replace it.

Then again, I'm lucky in that I don't suffer any of the bugs that others have reported.

Funny.,.... I read that over and over before I decided to buy mine. In fact one thread I was reading mentioned PCH - not so good for .ISO, Dune plays 98% of them, Netgear 550- 100%.

Can't wait till mine shows up and I can test it out.

The 550 not only handles Blu-Ray menus with .iso's it also handles Menus on DVD .iso's.

Mine have been rock solid as long as I bitstream audio.

Man I have not even touched my stack of DVDs. Does Dune have a problem playing the DVD .ISO with menus?

I bitstream two out of three TVs. The third is stereo only, but connected with HDMI if that matters. I do full 1:1 rips, so stereo audio should be on the .ISOs right?

God I thought building a theater was time consuming. I've spent more time on servers, players, and the ripping process than anything else.

I've never had an issue playing BD or DVD ISOs with my Dune D1.

Neither have I. But the Dune is definitely the more solid of the two. The Dune does not have the bugs that come with the 550.

Whenever I have a problem playing something on one player, I try it on the other. What has failed on one has failed on the other as well, and it has always been the fault of the file. So I find them equal as far as file compatibility.

The jukebox on the Dune (Zappiti) is less functional, but prettier. So the Dune is on the main TV, where my wife can use it. The 550 is in my lab, where it can drive my stereo and I can use it for testing.

It just gets better. A jukebox on the 550. tongue.gif

Yeah, so you got the same functionality as the 550 for how much more??!!

$80 is a steal for the 550. You are just pimping your own hardware.

The 550 has no jukebox, which is something my wife and kids use a lot. My wife and kids can use their iPads to pick a movie and play it via the 10Muse jukebox / app. Let me know when the 550 gets a jukebox.

A rose by any other name . . .

(sorry for the "cell-phone" image quality)

They actually call it the "Movie Wall", but it is every bit the jukebox that the Dune has. It is even more functional than Dune, as you can search the wall by director, actors, genre, year or decade. I really miss this functionality on my Dune, especially when someone comes over and says "let's watch a Jim Jarmusch movie".

If you go to the NeoTV-550 forum, you can also download iPad and Android apps to control the NeoTV and to browse the movie wall.

As I said - not as pretty as Zappiti, but much more functional.

That's why I use 10Muse and not Zappiti. You can pretty much search by actor, director, year, etc. Furthermore, I can use the jukebox on the iPads and serve as a remote control rather than using the TV, which to me is a lot faster. Yeah, I am hoping that is cell phone quality or else that would give anyone a major headache. Not as nice as 10Muse, but it works.

I still use my PCH C200 from 2009 as my main choice when wanting to see full BD menus. I originally had bought the NTV550 to use at my GFs house but in the end I found it was still easier to just use the Boxee Box I had been using there to watch the BD ISOs. Since the one thing I didn't like about the 550 was that there is no option to view the BD ISOs without the menus. The full menus add alot of time to the process before you are able to watch a title.

I'm re-ripping my blurays with anydvd and the speedmenu option, which also lets you keep original menus. A perfect combination IMO.

Is 10 muse just an i app that controls the zappiti interface? Or the Dune interface? Or is it an entire juke box solution for the Dune?

Entire different jukebox with an iOS app for iPad.
