not sure where you are located but in Canada Napster has closed it's doors therefore no more Napster for Canadians. While it was working, it was well.

Guys -- I need a professional to help finish installing my Marantz SR7005 with my speaker system, and to help set up a universal remote, etc. I'm not able to properly set up the system. Any recommendations for someone in NYC/Manhattan? Much appreciated. Thanks.

Too bad, then it is time to cancel my subscription with Napster

Just didn't know that I had to go to Marantz's website and input in the S/N, MAC Address and then finally the Upgrade ID for the AirPlay. Once I did that....THEN finally I could upgrade to the Added New Feature. Followed the OSD and in 10 minutes the download was complete and receiver rebooted and all is good!

But I doubt I'll use it as I have Apple TV and also don't have an iPhone, iTouch or iPad. Just an iPod but that's in my car. But if anyone that comes over does have any of those wireless devices then yes, AirPlay will come in handy. And since it was free, it was great to get it.

Ok. I did some tests. There is this Norwegian website (2L) that hosts multichannel high resolution FLAC files you can download for testing. I downloaded a 5.1 / 24 bit / 96kHz FLAC file (Mozart: Violin concerto in D major - Allegro). Using Audacity I cropped it to 40 seconds and then exported it to a lot of format variants:
  • FLAC/WAV
  • 16bit/24bit
  • 22.05kHz/44.1kHz/48kHz/96kHz
  • 2/3/4/5/6 channels

Copied these 80 files to a USB stick and tried them in USB/NET mode. Here's what happened:

Code:
                  2 channels
            FLAC WAV
            16 bit 24 bit 16 bit 24 bit
22.05kHz OK FFE OK OK
44.1 kHz OK OK OK OK
48 kHz OK OK OK OK
96 kHz OK OK OK OK

                  3 channels
            FLAC WAV
            16 bit 24 bit 16 bit 24 bit

                  4 channels

22.05kHz OK OK FFE FFE
44.1 kHz OK OK FFE FFE
48 kHz OK OK FFE FFE*
96 kHz ok nok FFE FFE

                  5 channels
            FLAC WAV
            16 bit 24 bit 16 bit 24 bit
22.05kHz OK FFE FFE FFE
44.1 kHz OK OK FFE FFE
48 kHz OK OK FFE FFE
96 kHz ok X FFE X

                  6 channels
            FLAC WAV
            16 bit 24 bit 16 bit 24 bit
22.05kHz OK OK FFE FFE
44.1 kHz OK OK FFE FFE
48 kHz OK OK FFE X
96 kHz X X X X

OK  = plays well
ok = plays with some degradation in display update and control
FFE = "File Format Error" message, file isn't played
FFE*= "File Format Error"message, file is played anyhow but stutters a lot
X = display isn't updated at all, control degraded, file starts playing but stops (often right away)
So, what's the verdict? Obviously with my SR7005 and its current firmware multi-channel WAV is not supported when playing in USB mode. I haven't tried streaming such files but I don't think that will make a difference.

Just about all WAV files with more than 2 channels are rejected with a "File Format Error". The silly thing is that 4 channel/24 bit/48kHz WAV file also triggers this error message, but the file is actually played by the amplifier but with lots of stuttering. Stereo WAV files are played well.

Looking at FLAC, two results are puzzling: 2 channels/24 bit/22.05kHz and 5 channels/24 bit/22.05kHz both trigger "File Format Error" messages, and the files are not played. The same resolution and sample rate with 3, 4 and 6 channels work fine ?!

You can notice that the FLAC decoder is put under stress when the number of channels increase. The display update becomes less smooth, with the progress counter sometimes jumping several seconds. This is noticable with 4 and 5 channels 16 bit / 96 kHz files.

24 bit / 96 kHz is a no no with 4 or more channels. 96kHz is not supported at all for 6 channel audio.

I've also tried some of these files with my UD5005 Bluray player. It does not recognize FLAC files at all, but has no issue with playing the high resolution multichannel WAV files. I'm not sure whether it will do Apple Lossless...

This certainly seems to be contradictory to what Kal wrote in his review of the AV7005...maybe the SR processing isn't as fast and powerful as the AV's? The units are supposedly very similar. Kal is an AVS member maybe he'll see your post and be able to shed some light on why his experience with the AV7005 differed from yours with the SR7005.Maybe if you sent him a PM referring to the Music in the Round AV review and your tests with the SR he could help...sorry I can't be of any assistance. I have a SR7005 and a UD5005 but am a total newbie regarding streaming hi-res FLAC,WAV,etc.Still just doing the DVD-audio and SACD thing...

My new SR7005 sounds great and the GUI seemed to work perfectly right out of the box with all sources including Pandora. However, while I can now use the GUI to select Pandora as a source, after that, there is no on screen GUI - the only menus I can see are on the receiver itself. This happened several days ago in the middle of a listening session - no changes to settings. I have reviewed connections, settings etc. to no avail. GUI works with HD radio and other sources. Any ideas?

Have yet to find a av receiver that can bring two channel magic. Been on a 4 year tour through $1500 models and haven't gotten there yet. Next stop is this model. Also considering onkyo 809 plus a parasound classic 2100 preamp which allows pass-through. Price is $1200 bucks either way. Outboard front three channels to emotiva xpa-3. either way gets me state of the art receiver. i want great 2 channel......your thoughts?

I think it's like some of the high-end Denons... they won't replace it rather just continue to sell it. The market must not justify a new model and the SR6006 pretty much matches it feature wise. I spoke to a dealer a while back and he stated it was still listed as active in the lineup. I'd love up pick one up at a nice close out price... I had a SR6005 which I loved.

Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 91.2 watts
1% distortion at 112.1 watts

Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 74.6 watts
1% distortion at 89.6 watts

Little surprising on this i guess. They did the same for marantz sr8002 and if u compare them the sr8002 did substantially better.Wonder why? Glad i still have mine.
Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1 percent distortion at 119.0 watts
1 percent distortion at 133.8 watts

All channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1 percent distortion at 109.1 watts
1 percent distortion at 117.7 watts
^^^

which, in real life, doesn't amount to a hill of beans... comparing those numbers, the greatest "advantage" the 8002 has over the 7005 is with seven channels driven (35 wpc)... which would amount to just around 1.5db of spl... which is insignificant...

also, in real life, people don't listen to pure sine waves being driven through all channels continuously...

now, what might be an interesting comparison is what happens with a nominal 4 ohm load... anyone got measurements for that?

As it turns out Denon will be discontinueing the 5308CI and the AVP very soon, while the 4810CI will be replaced by the 4313CI next spring. Going forward the 43XX series will be Denon's new flagship model.

Ok, so I installed my new SR7005 with the MM7025 and the wireless Ipod dock station and so far... I´m not impressed with it.

These are my 2 main reasons:

1.- I run the Audissey, and it gave me the strangest numbers ever. It detected all my speakers as Large, so considering my fronts are B&W CM9´s and the center and surrounds are infinity´s beta 20´s and c250, I think it´s not so bad.
The strange part came with it set the crossover at 40!

So I set the speakers to small (given the advice in here and because I like the result) and turn the crossover to 80 or 100 (I don´t remember really).

2.- For the second part, I feel no bass in the music played and I can´t find a way to manually increase the bass.

Otherwise, the unit is really nice, well built and the ipod docking station is awesome.

But so far I can´t say as in audio quality, this one outperforms the Harman Kardon 247 it replaced.

Any help will be really appreciatted.

regards

^^
1. When you run AUTO SETUP, if the AVR detects a speaker can handle below a 50hz signal, it sets the speaker to LARGE and to a 40hz crossover.

2. You were correct to reset ALL speakers to SMALL with minimum of 80hz crossovers (leaving any set above 80hz as is). This config should pass all lower level bass to the sub so perhaps try playing some music with heavy bass. What surround mode are you using to listen to music?
^^ Thank you very much for the information.

I set the B&W CM9´s to 60hz, the center to 90 and surrounds to 80hz. Not a particular reason to do so, but I´m just checking how it sounds.

The surround mode I´m using for music is DTS Music or Dolby Music. But for some reason I´m not able to select between all the SR7005´s array of choices. In fact, yesterday I played a bluray movie, which has DTS surround sound and the SR7005 didn´t selected DTS, it set itself automatically to "All Ch In".

I´m still trying to figure this device out. Yesterday I set the eq to manual and I was able to equalize the sound at my will.

I must recognize the sound is better from this unit thank from the HK 247, the sound is "warmer" and I hear things I didn´t hear before, I realized that now, when I played a movie I´ve played many times in the past, now it sounded differently.

Still I´m struggling with the bass.

THis will be an interesting trial and error weekend.

Menu choices will be available based on the audio being received. The 7005 doesn't select DTS or "All Ch In", rather it simply receives what the source sends it. In the above case, you have the BDP set to LPCM so the BDP decodes the audio and passes it to the 7005. Set the BDP to "bitstream" with secondary audio set to OFF and it will pass the compressed DD/DTS audio to the 7005 to decode, although in the end it doesn't matter which device does the decoding as the audio quality will be the same either way.

What about audio's quality, clarity and technology? SR7005 presents features that aren't available in its predecessors. And, everyone knows that amount of power can be good for any high efficient (sensitive) speakers. But, power isn't a factor that prevents me from buying an AVR, while the opposite comes true for the Amp.
The power difference isn't huge and has insignificant impact on Audio level; as My sweet spot is 14 feet away from my mains; so I am using an Amp to power them and SR7005 to power the surrounds speakers, which in my opinion saved me a lot of $$$ that I invested on speakers.

Hey, thank you very much for your answer, but when I tried to do what you recommended, the Playstation3 was already set at bitstream.

In fact, my old Harman Kardon did select DTS, Dolby, etc. and I didn´t changed anything in the PS3, so I don´t know what I´m doing wrong, because I´ve checked all the SR7005´s settings and they are set at what they are supposed to be.

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

do you have secondary audio turned on? etc. check the ps3 thread for further suggestions...

jd is correct (as always)... the avr is passive... it doesn't tell the player "give me this"... it takes what it gets...
^^ Not that I´m aware of, in fact, I checked yesterday for that.
I will double check that today.

^^^ Ok, so I double checked my PS3 a few minutes ago and noticed that one adjustment wasn´t set at bistream, so I did it and now the 7005 is doing the decoding.
Thanks JD and Ccoteng for your input.

QUESTION so how much power "or full power as say in goa lol" rofl nvm ......... do u get when bi amping to r/l efc
post #1318 of 2151
^^
Not much more if any more at all than just single wiring which is one of the reasons using the feature serves no real benefit. If you want more power, get an external amp that is at least 250W+.
^^^

no more than you get when you do not bi-amp... potentially less...

So whats the benefit ,,,, cleaner sound ? pls give me all the info on it u guys have ,,,,
