HDMI Passthrough on receiver and 3D question

HDMI 1.3 AVRs should pass 3D 1080i, but not full 3D 1080p which an HDMI 1.4 AVR is required. The cable doesn't change either way as long as it's a hi speed 1080p cable.

I have a Samsung UN55C8000 (3D TV), Samsung C6900 3D bluray player, and a Denon 3808CI - 3D doesn't display correctly running the video through the Denon. I believe this is the same issue folks without a 1.4 HDMI receiver are experiencing.

I run HDMI from the bluray to the TV, then optical audio to the receiver to enjoy bluray (what limited content there is). However, I lose Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master capability.

If someone has a TESTED silver bullet, I'd love to hear it before I purchase a new receiver.

Rather than upgrade your 3808, sell the Samsung BDP and get a Panasonic with dual HDMI outputs.

Has that been proven? I thought that was still speculation (that 1080i 3D would work with HDMI 1.3 receivers.)

According to Thomas J. Norton in the September HomeTheater issue: "But the only guarantee of passing 3D over HDMI 1.4 through an AVR or surround processor is if that device is HDMI 1.4 and has the HDMI 1.4 firmware needed to pass 3D. An HDMI 1.3 AVR, surround processor, or other device in the source-to-display chain might pass along a 3D source, but there are no guarantees that such a connection will be free of glitches, let alone work at all." I think MJH is saying the same thing...

Yep, selling my C6900 (around $200 used - if one can get that much for it knowing its 1.3 HDMI AVR limit) and buying the Panasonic dual HDMI output (best price I've seen is $375 + shipping) is a good option to provide full 3D functionality using my Denon 3808.

However, I've decided I'd rather spend the $$ on a new 1.4 HDMI receiver just because I like new toys and use the Denon on another non 3D Sammy.

A couple posters in the 3808 thread have noted they have done it without issue, although likely depends on the 3D format being passed and the particular AVR being used.

The only ones I'm aware of are the Panasonic 300 and 350. Amazon.com has the 350 for $380 through Abe's of Maine. I got lucky and found a demo at BB/MHT for 1/2 price.

Well take this for what it is worth. I just asked the monoprice technical people and they say that ALL of their splitters will do HDMI 1.4. So if that is correct why not get a splitter for $40 and split the signal instead of buying a new receiver?

I would get an email in to them first and get them to confirm that then buy the product. That way if it doesn't work return and refund

EDIT: Upon pushing the tech people a bit further they said HDMI has said to remove 1.4 markings on all products blah blah blah. OK no issue there so do they do 3D and they said YES may not do ethernet (no way they do ethernet IMHO)

What splitter do they recommend?

I don't have this issue as I don't have a 3D display. If you have a long run then powered is the way to go. Short run any of them should be fine. Select the cheapest have them confirm that it will work for 3D and test it out. Then if it doesn't work then you ask for the money back

This is a work / doesn't work issue -- shouldn't degrade the picture within normal application

Guess it depends on which tech you talk to ... I just chatted with a Monoprice tech who apologized for that misinformation and stated that although they currently have (3) HDMI switches that will pass 3D video, they currently have NO HDMI splitters that will pass full 1080p 3D video.

HDTVSupply claims to have a few 3D HDMI splitters of which the lowest priced is a 1x2 cable adapter, although apparently the only 3D BDP it's been tested with is the Samsung C6900.

Don't you love it. I really thought the CSR was wrong which is why I was saying get it in writing....

Well if people need 3D NOW then maybe they are best off getting a new receiver. I am sure that within a very short time frame there will be affordable splitters and matrices out there.

Does not the Samsung BD-C6900 have 2 HDMI Outputs? From Samsung C-6900 Spec Page..

If not the Samsung DB-C7900 has 7.1 Analog out's (Online for $257)
That should solve the problem so far as the audio goes.
