Lost, the final season

I have had the BD box for two days and only had the time to look at the featurettes and listen to the commentaries.

The PQ seems rather good, but I did not find it to be stellar. I even suspect a tiny little bit of EE, but I may be wrong and, even if I am not, it's admittedly negligible. Apart from that, several nights scenes did not fare too well, at least on my gear: sometimes, the blacks looked very grey and the picture offered rather poor shadow detail. But the overall PQ was always more than ok. I'd rate it a 7 or 8/10.

As for the supplementary material, you get a few featurettes (including the much talked about 12 minutes with the new people ruling the island) and 4 commentaries (LAX, part 1, Prof. Linus, Ab Aeterno and Across the Sea). The featurettes are nice, but practically non informative about the mythology (except for a few details). Two of the commentaries fare better in this regard (Ab Aeterno and Across the Sea), but the fact that the finale remains without commentary is, to me, rather inexcusable, especially because a finale commentary by Damon and Carlton is explicitely promised in the commentaries to LAX and Across the Sea.

All in all, buy this set if you want the episodes of the final season + a seasoning of extra details on the mythology. But do not expect from this set ultra big revelations about the mysteries left unsolved. At one point in a commentary, Damon and Carlton even mention explicitely a theory, saying it's an interesting one, and immediately add that they do not want to confirm or deny it. Quite frankly, after listening to the two commentaries they have recorded, I ended up finding their humour quite condescending and very often insulting to the fans. But that's only me (?). Let not that prevent you from giving "them" your tough earned dollars (or Euros)!

I don't know! What is missing from the season 6 DVD set?

Since the Lost blu-rays didn't come with episode guides/booklets I have created them for each season as each was released. I have now finished the one from season 6, and updated/fixed the previous seasons.
So if anyone wants them...

Season 1

Download

Season 2

Download

Season 3

Download - US Version
Download - UK Version

Season 4

Download

Season 5

Download
Download - HMV Bonus Disc Version

Season 6

Download

On each booklet just print page 2 on the back of page 1 and so on. but beware, I have offered multiple versions of some pages in some booklets.

I'm thinking of doing a book for the complete collection which will combine bits from all the books, if some people are interested.

Wow. Beautiful job!

In a review I read, the reviewer stated the complete collection boxset has a bonus disc with even more special features but did not outline what those are. Anyone know? Also, what's in the BB set that's different?

something (for the BestBuy one) about 20 min of extra scenes and other stuff

it wasn't very clear at all

i read something about how some extra scenes with Hurley as the new Jack and some extra commentary on the finale were big box set only (and no I am NOT falling for that, don't screw over the loyal people who have been buying all along and then hide special discs in some giant boxed set only it may even lead me to just wait a while until the price for the standalone eventually falls way down)

"The New Man In Charge" is also part of the stand-alone Season 6 BD set.

Right, I know New Man in Charge is on the season 6 set. I wonder if there are any add'l commentaries on the complete collection set. I found it odd that Cuse and Lindelof didn't record a commentary for the finale, at least there wasn't one on the season 6 set.

The only difference in content between the two sets is that the Complete Series set has an extra discs with some additional featurettes.

There's no commentary on the finale because Lindelof and Cuse have been in Radio Silence on the subject ever since the episode aired. They want people to interpret it for themselves.

I thought they said they were going into radio silence for a few months and would talk again on a blu-ray.... maybe they realized after reading all the comments that they had no way to escape....
I thought the finale was absolutely awesome, right up until the final 5 minutes and then it brought up all sorts of things that still seem a little questionable to me, can't help but think the parallel universe take
might not have been better, or if they really wanted the purgatory or sorts take, well then done it in a way that didn't bring up all sorts of issues and problems. They also did seem to abandon the whole
we will clearly explain the smoke monster and everything with science stuff though.

Got my disc 1 rental today. To me it looks just as good as the previous seasons, but then I also thought Seasons 1 and 2 looked the same as all the others whereas some people thought they looked a bit worse (though I only watched the episodes with commentaries). The OP is correct in that some of the night scenes don't reach into the deepest black level.

Just a few quick screengrabs:

the shot that shows jack's reaction when cindy the flight attendant shows herself at the temple. that had a lot of detail. also perhaps the wideshot of the temple exterior? all in the premiere.

lost has always been some of the best looking imagery on blu-ray. can't wait for tomorrow.

I found `The new man in charge' poorly produced, not very informative and sometimes quite offensive to fans. I vastly prefer the four commentaries provided for season 6.

I hear that the Complete Collection has a hidden disc in it...apparently there are clues to finding the disc by looking at the other stuff that came with the package...is this true?

Yes.

Everything I've heard has suggested that they're keeping mum for a few years, at least. They are well aware that a good portion of their audience waits until DVD/Blu-ray to catch up with the show.

With Best Buy having the S6 BD set for the same price as Amazon today ($47.99), I made a lunch time trip to the big blue & yellow box.

Not sure if it has been posted here...in addition to the regualr 5 disc S6 BD set, Best Buy has a SIX disc version for the same sale price. Disc 6 is a standard DVD with additional bonus footage. I assume this footage is taken from -or maybe is ALL of - the on-disc content found in the mega box set? Anyone know?

Either way, pretty decent price.

My bonus disc that I got with my blu ray season 6 set seems to be very similar to the complete collection extras...the bonus disk content description on the limited Best Buy edition is WRONG. See the pics for Menu vs Box comparison

As far as the box set's exclusive disc content, I found this:

A unique series of featurettes that takes viewers on very personal tours of Oahu where the series was created, with key cast and crew as they reflect.

Exploring the global phenomenon that is Lost, bonus showcases events ranging from the series cast and crew at San Diego’s famed Comic-Con convention to international voice recordings, local events and even fan parties, all of which helped make the show into a worldwide favorite.

A closer look at some of the props with cast, writers and producers, exploring their significance, stories and emotional ties to the characters.

Humorous yet emotional look at every character who died on the series
16 hilarious Lost “Slapdowns” featurettes showcasing celebrity Lost fans who confront Executive Producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse to ask press questions about the final season, including the Muppets and cast members Nestor Carbonell, Michael Emerson, Rebecca Mader and more.

Looks like the Best Buy exclsuive disc has this covered.

Guess I essentially now have the BD boxset - at least as far as disc content, or the majoirty of it, is concerned. Nice.

edit: according to the box set bonus breakdown over @ AICN, looks like the Best Buy extra disc IS the box set bonus material (in 480p, but hell...it was "free")

That's because they have no real explanation. They really should've went into radio silence years ago..

Is the extra disc the same for the complete collection and Season 6 Best Buy exclusive? Is the disc included with the complete collection a bluray with HD features?

Wow. Thanks for letting us now. Very cool news. I was hoping the BB exclusive would be the Complete Collection's bonus disc. Actually, looking at the BB disc, it also contains all of the extras from the S3 Walmart bonus disc and the S5 BB bonus disc, as well as additional extras. Very cool bonus. But the anal Lost fan in me wonders what happened to the advertised S6 extras.

This has me confused but I think I'm going to return my season 6 BD to Amazon for the BB set that has the extra DVD.
From what I'm reading, you get just about everything from the bonus mystery disc on the mega box set but only in 480p instead of 1080i.

I played around with this disc last night. Either it's EVERYTHING from the boxset, or (more likely) some stuff from said set + the stuff shiftyeyes mentioned as being from various WalMart/BestBuy bonus content from previous seasons.

Either way, more content that the standard 5 disc BD release - only real drawback being it's only DVD format - not quite as pretty to look at. But since I already owned S1-5's respective BD sets, going w/ just the S6 set made sense. Nice to get at least some of the on disc goodies from the mega boxset.

Play around with the disc 6 menu, BTW - several "easter eggs" there.

It does sound like this Best Buy exclusive is rather limited. I picked up the only one my local store had on the shelf yesterday (release day), an hour after the store opened. So, you may want to grab a copy ASAP, THEN return your Amazon order.

I had a Best Buy rewards coupon I was hoping to use on the complete series set, but it was long gone by the time I got there yesterday.
