I've scoured the owners manuals and cannot find any differences between the s770 and 1700ES... none. Well, label and warranty, of course.
Super bitmapping and HD reality enhancer don't seem to be spoken of in the booklets; but having said that, I own a s770 and the 2D picture is outstanding and one big surprise is that the 3D is - to my tired eyes - about 10% better (more depth) on the same TV compared to the former Panasonic 350.
Something very interesting in the setup on the player for 3D is a setting in the 770 menu for television screen size - and I have an 46HX909, entered 46" set, and this ???might??? account for the very slight improvement. What I think of 3D is still really not something I could express here; it DOES work but between flicker at times, bright scenes or portions of picture, and disc, and just not liking the heavy, uncomfortable glasses, well it's a high price to pay for the effects rendered.
The loss of the ES lines in the mail and some B&M stores (unless you special order and wait) seems to be a difference in name only, and warrantee. It would appear the days of the 30 pound players have come to a close (sure, this fall they'll announce a new 60 pound model for those who see and/or hear a difference... maybe)
