@ Kilian.ca For all I know, you're right re SACD through HDMI. As I had said, my receiver is primitive, and as such does not
allow HDMI sound
at all. I use either coax, optical or (for SACDs) 6 channel analog from the DVD or BD player to the receiver, and wire HDMI direct from these players to the TV for picture. A bit more wire, but works really well - I've always believed in direct connections.
You see, Kilian old chap, unlike many folks on this board, I am decidedly NOT
obsessed with endless "tweakery" - and I have to respect the (considerable) limitations of my AV system and budget, and getting the best possible result. I also have a life, and I have not "run the test" within your self-imposed 48h time limit mainly because I haven't had a chance over the last few days. I have the new Sony BD + a new Sony TV (KDL40EX500) which I'm stil getting used to, AS TIME ALLOWS
My main recent preoccupation has been trying to get everything to work with my blOOdy Harmony remote (which I love and detest simultaneously
) - all my wife and daughter want to do is watch a video, and they haven't much patience with endless fiddling around.
I also don't have the luxury of a "man-cave" where I can shut the door and tinker with this gear for hours on end. We have exactly one TV at our small house (in the living room ... shared resources!!), and anyway my wife had never seen the point to all this gear, until a couple of years ago when we purchased (during one of her rare weak moments) a modest HK AVR and surround speakers. She now acknowledges the improvement, realizing that good sound is a necessary part of the experience.
Sorry for the long rant. I'll report back re SACD compatibilities, etc re the Sony BDP. (I don't have any non-hybrid SACDs, but I can
tell whether the SACD layer is playing)
