I will not need any of the wi-fi, downloading or internet ability so no comment on those. One thing that does bug me (besides the previously mentioned loss of forced 24p) is the fact that the deck powers down after 30 minutes of inactivity. I am not sure if it will shut down if there is a disc in the player, but if you turn it on to let the electronics warm up.....30 min. and it powers down. I like to let my equipment idle along and warm up before "critical" listening for maybe an hour or longer (or until I am ready for the experience). As far as I can figure out, it is not defeat able.....other than that, so far so good. One other note ...the remote codes are the same as for my S-760. My 999ES DVD players were switchable between 3 different "flavours" of IR. That was a handy option to have, but I guess the players are so inexpensive now that those nice feature are gone....maybe the 1700ES (no sign of this one in Canada though) will have this.

Cheers,
P.E.Hannon

So us version comes boxed with 3d bluray movie?

I have both the 570 and 770 players. The wi-fi connectivity seems identical to me, which is to say, very good to excellent!

S770 also has 1GB built in memory. Not sure what the S570 has.

The S570 is the only other one in the Sx70 series that has the 1GB memory included besides the S770, almost a requirment to have if you ever play any BD's from Lionsgate, which was my test disc for loading times.
-My older Panasonic with 1GB I had to buy and install myself, even with that, took more than twice the time to load over the Sony S770.

For those of you that have had both the 570 and the 770, have you noticed a difference in DVD upconversion performance between the two? Does anyone that has both players have a test disc (like S&M)?
Thanks
I only have the 770 but am happy with the upconversion of the unit.

I did too! Same price, delivered and no tax, one day after you did.

I don't need the 3D nor do I need the WiFi, since my new Sony 60EX700 already has the same internet content. But I want all the other features that come with this player.

Anybody with a S770 able to comment on upscale quality vs. the Toshiba HD DVD players? I've always found those to be the best looking picture (I have a Samsung BD-P1000, Panasonic DMP-BD35, Toshiba A1, A2, A30). I currently use the A30 for SD and HD DVDs, and the Panasonic for BDs.

I can't compare it to a Toshiba since I do not have that model but I am happy with the upconversion on the 770. To me it looks good.

I wish there were some reviews for the 770 available online but I can't seem to find anything.

Did u compare to ps3?

I do not own a PS3. This is my first Blu-Ray player.

I owned the 770 and the toshiba xa2. I think the 770 is at least it's equal for DVD up conversion. The 770 is a smooth and quick operator with a picture and features that beats the 1000es in my opinion for both blu-Ray and DVD. I returned it for 2 reasons.

1. It has no color, contrast, gamma, etc controls to make possible adjustments.
2. I felt my pioneer elite 23fd had a slightly superior picture. I kept the pioneer and returned the Sony. The Sony was almost a keeper. Excellent player overall.

Any truth to rumour that S770 will convert SACD DSD stream to 176.4/24 PCM?

Most other players convert to bog standard 88.2/24 PCM.

This is one of those ES products I like to call "ES lite" or ESA... Differences are warranty (+4 years), IR jacks, and...that seems to be it. Oh and the ES badge/logo--can't forget about that. The instruction and service manuals will probably be shared by these two,

Trying to register my BDP-S770 so I can get Netflix, Pandora, etc. but when I try and register on dash.chumby.com/dash/new, I get "Registration failed due to missing device SUIT. Please reboot your device and try again."

Anyone else run into this?

Anybody tried if this can read NTFS formatted USB drive ?
Can anyone confirm or deny that this can stream 5.1 audio from internet sources such as Amazon VOD? I was reading in another review that it can't do it!??? I'd really like to know. Thanks.

Well I finally purchased the Sony BDP-S770. Overall I'm very impressed with the 770. It is definitely a more solidly constructed player than the other current Sony blu-ray players. As expected, blu-rays look great. I have a PS3 and, in my admittedly non-scientific, side-by-side comparison testing, both appeared to provide equal PQ. The 770 also has impressive PQ when streaming Netflix. I streamed/watched 2 hours of Battlestar Galactica this weekend and the image was as good as I've seen for Battlestar in HD on the Syfy channel.

Is there no review of this player available yet?

Not that I'm aware of. One reviewer told me that he is considering a review, but is first trying to confirm that the 770 isn't 570 hardware in a different case.

To that end, I was hoping one of the posters that said they had both the 570 and 770 would reply to my earlier post asking if the DVD upscaling performance was different between the two. Even better would be some test results using a disk like Spears and Munsil.
Is the 770 any faster then the 570, as far as disc loading or menu navigation? Or about the same?
what would be the difference between the s770 and the 1700es? does the 1700 include super bitmapping/hd reality enhancer?

I haven't tried it, but I did write Sony tech support to ask them. They said that the 770 does not support NTFS. Below is the relevant part of their response:

I understand your concern regarding the Blu-ray Player's compatibility with the NTFS formatted drives. The player can only recognize Mass Storage Class(MSC) devices (such as flash memory or an HDD) that are FAT-compatible and nonpartitioned, Still Image Capture Device (SICD) class devices and 101 keyboard.
Hey all! S770 here and loving it so far, but I have one very minor issue:

When I first start a disc/track, it seems like the first couple seconds are cut off.

For example, I have a BBC disc that starts with a "Hello, and welcome to your blah blah blah." Well, when I start it with this player, it starts at the "welcome to your" part. It's not the biggest deal in the world, and on most tracks I can press the skip back button to get the missed part (unless I get an operation not permitted thing), but it is slightly annoying.

Any ideas?
