To be honest, I had high expectations after reading so many great reviews. What it boils down to, though, is a very nice presentation and some good patterns, but nothing that you can't find anywhere else. At almost 40 bucks (retail) it's simply not worth compared to the fantastic and free AVS HD709.

The most useful pattern to me is one that only the AVS disc seems to have. That's the Flashing Primary Colors pattern, which allows you to align not only blue, but also red and green using a filter.

The WOW disc's big plus is that it has lots of reference material bundled, making it easy to see what your calibration efforts actually look like.

Thanks! The reference material is what I'm looking for, but that's too pricey for me.

I really like that flashing primaries pattern as well. We're fortunate to have the built-in filters to be able to take advantage of it. From what I understand, not many TV's at this price point have them.

The LGs are unbeatable when it comes to tweaking. Most TVs don't even have a blue filter. By the way, the built-in OTA test pattern, the first one, can also be used with the blue filter, but adjusting Tint is almost impossible because the overlay is in the way

Ok, how about the Panasonic DMP-BDT210? It's at my max price point (200) but it does have integrated WiFi (in case the ATV2 dies or I like the other options that the ATV2 doesn't offer). It's a 2D-3D player but that shouldn't interfere with 2D Blu-ray or DVD, right?

Otto, I don't know if I would want to spend 200 bucks on a stand-alone BR player. You don't have a 3D TV at this time, so you won't be using that feature. You already have your ATV2, so you got those apps covered. I would get the cheapest brand-name BR player out there, just to get an idea. You can always buy a better one when you need more features. Check the Fry's ads. They always have players on sale for less than $100. I just couldn't recommend the 2010 LGs due to the 24Hz bug.

I tried that out to my soundbar. Sound seemed really lacking compared to just running the audio directly from my cable box, or even TV speakers. weird.

I bought the 210 to replace the 570 and I adore it. Amazon has it for a lot less than $200 right now.

Plus you get a free copy of Avatar 3D which sells pretty well on Ebay right now.

There you are The only thing I didn't like about the 210 is that the WiFi dongle is about another $100 It fits in the back if I remember correctly which is a lot nicer than the LGs (even the new BD640) but........ I don't really need the WiFi now cause I have the ATV2 so I 'spose that if I did want it later by that time the price would be reasonable.

I also can recommend the Panasonic BDT-210. Amazon has the 110 if, as you said, you don't particularly need the internet stuff for $129. Best Buy and Fry's have it listed for $150.

Thanks Henry. Fry's is on my Saturday to-do list so we'll see. We usually get a big print ad in the Saturday paper and I can always do the CrossFit1 bit and take the ad (if it's there) to BB and price match I guess when it comes down to it, all I really need is a reliable Blu-ray player that upconverts very well and can play a variety of discs. I really need to stop buggin' my "homies" here and just make a friggin' decision.

Another vote for the Panny's. Looks like I need to do a side by side spec comparison to see if they are similar (other than the WiFi).

Djams: I downloaded AVSHD 709 AVCHD twice and the size is not matching what's stated it should be on page 1 of the thread. I keep getting a file size of 4,692,443,136. Can you tell me what you got if you also used the AVCHD file?

I'm only asking Djams because I'm assuming he downloaded most recently.

@sheshechic

Ding! Ding! Ding! You win the "what BR player do I buy" contest I'm going to go and hunt down the Panasonic 210. Henry's point was well taken but this will have to be a one-time purchase and after weighing all of the pros and cons (some of which are still unclear to me ) I'm gonna do it. I just hope that it (or any other player for that matter) will be able to play the DVDs that I've transferred from VHS on my Sony. It should because they were finalized but we'll see.

That's the same size I got. Didn't even notice that it didn't match

It seems to work just fine.

Edit: I just went and looked - the file sizes listed are for the compressed files prior to extraction. If you check the size of the .7z or .exe file I'll bet you'll find that it matches. Actually, as long as you successfully extracted the .iso image, you should be all set

Congrats! You should start the AVS HD709 download before you head out - it takes forever. Don't forget to pick up at least one bluray movie while you're out

Thanks. Hopefully I can pull a CrossFit1 and get BB to price match. I want to buy from a B&M so I hope there's one available. I'm stuck on hold now with AT&T trying to get my MicroCell back up and running so as soon as we're done......

Victory is mine!

I went to Fry's with an Amazon printout for Panasonic BDT210. As I walked in, an employee handed me a little yellow printout that said "Fry's will meet any internet price" and then listed the conditions. Bolstered with confidence, my Amazon printout and little yellow paper in hand, I marched off to the HDTV section. Found the blu-ray section and started rummaging thru it. A salesperson came up to me and asked if he could help, I told him what I was looking for, and he said he didn't think they had any but would go an check. Having gone thru this before with Fry's, I started pulling the 110s out of the rack. Lo and behold, there were 3, unopened or repackaged 210's on the bottom. The salesperson came back and was apologetic that they didn't have any in stock while I was standing there with one under my arm Sheepishly, he took me over to the register.

I showed him the Amazon ad (which I dl'd yesterday) and he immediately pointed out that the price at the top, under price ranges, listed a used one at 174. I pointed to the middle of the page where the price was listed as 160. He said that it has to be an authorized internet dealer, and the dealer listed under the Amazon heading was for someone else and not Amazon. No way says I, I want this price! So, I made him register on the Amazon site like he was going to buy one and when he did so, a price of 166 came up. I'll take it I said! He called a Manager over and before he could even say anything, I handed my little yellow paper to him and pointed to the Amazon screen.

I am now sitting here in my family room with a brand new Panasonic DMP-BDT210P which I only paid 166 for! I win

My daughter called me and when I told her my story, she said that Blockbuster was going out of business (which I knew) and they were selling their Blu-rays for about $10 (which I didn't know). So, off I went. The pickings were kinda slim but I found Oceans 13 (we liked those movies), used, but with no visible scratches, for $8. Another score for me I do get a free, 3D Avatar disc from Panasonic as well once I return the card. I may sell as sheesh suggested or just keep it. The 210 will play 3D's as well on a 2D tv.

Software is updating as we speak so as soon as that is done, it's play time!

BTW, wifey called from Disneyland and the deal was blessed because of the way I handled Fry's. Does life get any better

Does anyone here have a list or know of a list of what changed in each firmware update? I just had mine updated from 06.02.16 to 08.02.16 and the only differences i've noticed is that there are new options for "cinemanow" and "mlbtv" and a "coming soon" in the netcast menu.

Any other changes? Thanks very much.

I have the biggest smile on my face. I'm so happy for you, that you had a good experience.

I'm not sure if I'll sell my Avatar either since the next tv will most likely have 3D. All the new mid price tvs have it now.

Do you plan to try the AVS HD709?

Thanks. I was afraid that it wasn't successful since it didn't match. I suspected that everything might be okay when the second one matched the first.

I've burned it to dvd and now I just need to find the time. Too early or too late won't work since my eyes are usually too dry at those times (Lasik's fault) and I don't see as well.

Again just to be safe....

Well I tried my gamecube earlier through av1 (composite) and the picture was horribly blurry (expected as much). So I did tons of adjustments to the sharpness. About 600 total value changes (counting one adjustment such as 50 to 51 as 1 and so on) and did both types of picture wizard calibrations and such.

Left it on at 100 sharpness and edge enhancer on at high (which i also adjusted between off, low, medium, and high about 60 times) for about 30 minutes.

Now again I am worried that I did permanent damage to the tv. I'm not going to mess around with it anymore but what do you guys think? Did I do damage to it?

One of the downsides of using the headphone out is that the TV volume necessarily impacts the signal. I need to turn up the TV volume a fair bit to get the sound at a level similar to using composite outs from my old TV.

One of these days I'll spring for a new receiver. heh

I did dl the MP4-2c.7z file (think that's the correct one for my Mac. Only took about 3 minutes to dl and the size is 22.6MB compressed and 1.71GB decompressed. I hope that's the correct one. I'll try to burn it today. Yeah, I think I'll keep Avatar as well. The 210 will play the 3D (in 2D) so we'll see.

You want to get the AVCHD .7z file. The one you downloaded does not create a bluray 'format' on the disc.

We don't know for sure what any of the firmware updates really did, because there is no change log anywhere. The big one was the one from 06.x to 08.x, which updated the Netflix interface to 2.0 and added a few apps, like you mentioned. The "Coming Soon" placeholder will very likely stay there forever, as I don't believe there will be another firmware update

No need to worry. You can't really damage the TV. There is no burn-in or anything like that. Mess with it all you want!
