From one gamer to another, how far away are you going to be sitting? Have you played a lot of games on large displays? I only ask because I find that at a screen size over 42" I have to be about 8-10ft. away or I'm stuck turning my head slightly to take in the entire screen. It may not seem like a big deal, and I don't know what type of games you play or your viewing setup, but it's something to think about. I actually went with the 42ld550 over the 47ld650 partly for that reason since our couch is only 5-6ft. from the TV.

And just to add to the input others have given, after also thinking about picking up the ld520 rather than the 550, I'm very happy I went with the internet capable model. I really like having the automatic software updates, especially after the most recent upgrade in the Netflix interface.

With the 47" you're also getting 200k dynamic contrast vs. 100k for the 55" (take that for what you will), .4 faster response time (definitely a worthwile gaming stat in my opinion), one more HDMI port, one more component input, and an additional USB port. Just my two cents though, they're both nice TVs.

Check posts #306 & #314 for all the settings.

I suggest doing OTA/Cable Cinema first to get familiar with the button pushing and menus.

Try the OTA/Cable Expert 2 Daytime as your second setting. See how you like it. It's a brighter setting for daytime and also great for sports.

Then if you have a DVD player or Blu-ray, do the HDMI Expert1 & 2.

When you do the HDMI Expert 1 and Expert 2 settings, enter values as indicated, then set any user video controls up on your Blu-ray or DVD player.

Please comeback and let us know how you like or dislike the settings and we can help you get the most out of your TV given your room lighting conditions, program material, and picture tastes.

I own the 55ld520 and absolutely love it. I use it to play mw2 and there is no issue with lag or pixilation at all. The only problem I have found with it is some times when watching network programming like the office for example there is some light screen juddering but I think that has more to do with the video source than the tv itself because when watching espn for example there is no juddering at all. This tv is truly a steal I got it at best buy for 1299 free shipping and a free 19lcd thrown in with it, I highly recommend it, my father in-law came over last week to watch the bears games and he bought one yesterday!

If you have any other questions about it let me know also if you do get it I can give you some settings that I have come up with.. they are a combo of phases, henrys and some of my own little touches

thanks

that is pretty much exactly what i use the 55ld520 for and it is great except i would replace that gross ps3 what an xbox

Okay Henry, here are the promised ATI HTPC video settings for HDMI Expert1 & 2.

I've gone over these numerous times and and these seem to be pretty decent and in some ways, even more balanced than what I got out of HDMI Expert 1 & 2 for DVD Blu-ray.

The thing I notice is I get some color/brightness/contrast imbalance depending on what internet video source I am viewing, which, I guess is to be expected. But overall these are pretty good and look very good when playing a Blu-ray through my HTPC.

One thing I am wondering about with any of the settings is the possible difference between the models and LCD panels in the "LD" line. Based on your comments and others, I don't think the settings always translate 100% from say a 42LD550, to a 52LD550, a 60LD550, etc. The settings may be close, but in some cases not translate well, which we've already mentioned elsewhere in this thread. In addition, a few posts back I posted an updated Expert 2 Daytime setting with Energy Saving set to minimum and Dynamic Contrast set to Medium. I remember you saying on your TV you don't care for the use of Dynamic Contrast because it crushes or masks details in dark areas I believe. On my 42LD550, it seems to do the opposite. It seems to bring out details in darker areas while also reducing "white crush" in adjacent very bright areas of the scene (such as a bright sky with puffy clouds).
Anyway, I guess I'm " just sayin' " as they say.

So, once again for all the other viewers of this thread, these settings were made with my HP s5560f HTPC with the ATI HD5450 graphics card.

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing remote lag. It's like the batteries in the remote are constantly going dead or something. This is really annoying when you are trying to navigate the picture settings. Sometimes I have to hit a button 7 or 8 times for the tv to respond, I guess I just don't want to go through the hassle of contacting best buy or LG over just the remote. If anyone is experiencing this let me know.

I don't have any lag or button trouble on my remote (42LD550). Check to make sure you don't have any compact florescent lights or possibly any other IR radiating devices (IR repeater ?) facing the TV. Otherwise I would think you could get another remote to try. Awhile ago, I bought an Insignia LCD for our daughter and the remote was flakey and I called Best Buy, they gave me a number to call, and the CSR just sent me another remote for free. A replacemnt remote is only $20 online. I'm buying another just to have as a spare. Sometimes they get mysteriously "broken" by sitting on by other poeple.

As I mentioned previously I purchased the 46LD550 over the weekend and got the HD cable set up on Monday. I havent had a lot of time to mess around with the settings yet as I am still building stands and plugging in equipment but I wanted to give some initial feedback and inquire about a couple of minor concerns.

I was able to tryout Phase's "Simple Picture Settings" from Post #65 last night and my wife commented that it was "definitely better" than the original factory cinema settings. I rely on her feedback as I am somewhat color blind which makes small distinctions difficult for me. I know "definitely better" doesnt sound like much but I will add that she thinks I am silly for wanting to try some of the more advanced settings so apparently it looks good enough to her for us to leave alone (I dont plan on leaving it alone).

As for the set itself I am relatively pleased overall. The size, features and picture for the price I paid is borderline ridiculous. Honestly, short of going with an off brand I dont think I could have found a 46" 1080p 120Hz LCD for less. The picture is really good overall with the exception of what I will call "noise" in the background especially on darker scenes, it looks almost snowy at times. I dont know if this is normal or if the cause is the settings, the TV itself or my signal as I have only tried it hooked up to the cable box and an older 480p progressive scan DVD player (no Blu-Ray in the house yet). The other occasional issue is a slight studdering effect which is usually noticeable on facial closeups when the subject moves, it kind reminds me of a less annoying/noticeable version of the old Max Headroom commercials. Again, this may be my signal or it may be something that will be reduced when I try some of the more advanced settings, I cant be sure at this point. The standard sound is good as well, I havent really pushed the limits but I probably never will as that is what my external surround sound is for (hooking that up tonight). The matte panel is doing an awesome job minimizing the huge reflection issues I have which lead me to lean towards this line in the first place. Standard definition looks pretty good as well once we made the switch to Phase's settings, I think it will look even better with more effort.

Overall, I think that this is an excellent TV for the price. The couple of minor issues that I have noticed to date are not worth the extra $150-$250 a different model or brand would have cost me. I would not hesitate to reccommend this TV to friends or family, in fact I probably will steer my parents in this direction shortly.

I will drop in with updates as I get more time with the set and try additional settings. If anyone has any feedback or tips on my two issues I would love to hear it, even if it is just telling me that it is normal and I should get over it (that is what my wife says).

Once again, thanks to everyone on this forum for helping with the advice and settings. This whole process of purchasing and setting up a new LCD would have been infinately more painful with your help.

Is the "noise" present when viewing a DVD and what input are you using for the DVD player?
If you can, try using a regular antenna (even rabbit ears) and scan in some OTA channels see if noise or the stuttering is present compared to cable local channels. Others have mentioned the "stuttering" when connected to some cable boxes. I have gotten that in the past on a few newer digital TVs in the past when connected to older DirecTv and Dish satellite receivers. The larger the screen, the more you will notice even slight artifacts that you never saw on a smaller or older TV. Also, what input are you using for the Cable? If it is the RF (antenna) noise can be introduced by old or oxidized cable connection.

Otherwise, congratulations on the new TV! ")

On a different note. I've been enjoying watching TV programs from HulLu on my HTPC. The video quality is so good sometimes I forget it's online TV, especially "Live" shows like news or SNL.

If I'm not online much lately, I just got a new Yamaha RX-V765 AV receiver and am configuring that with the LG 42LD550 and my other equipment.

Thanks a bunch for those ATI settings. I'll try them tonight.

As far as the different panels, I think we're on to something here. Unfortunately, I have never looked at a 550 other than my own 60", but I might go to Fry's today and see if they have any on display. Your settings do work great with my TV, though, and make it look so much better than the default ones. I wonder how the IPS and VA panels used in the LGs differ other than in their viewing angles.

I currently play on a 50' plasma. I am only about 7 feet from the screen but I play just fine. I usually play split screen HALO with a buddy and its fun fun. I also rather enjoy watching blu-rays on my big screen. Im still scared to get the 47' because it would be a downgrade in size for me. I have only ever owned tv's above 50'

Damn thanks for all the input man. This is exactly what I was looking for when I came to this board. I checked out the 47ld650 and the 55ld520 at frys as they were both on display and I love both of them. I reallllllly would love to have the 55ld650 but it's out of my price range. I am leaning more towards the 55ld520 now as I dont think ill ever use netcast and 240hz bs 120hz cant be that big a deal. thx

No problem and I don't miss the netcast really or the extra hdmi, I use hd cable, xbox and my pc for blu-rays so for me it was definitely worth it to buy the 55ld520 because I don't need the extras

I get something like this, but not as bad as you claim. When navigating the menus and such it does feel very sluggish moving from one option to another; not nearly as snappy as many other TVs I've had (Panasonic Plasma, Vizo LCD)

I guess I've just gotten used to it, but It is definitely an irritation.
( I have the 42LD520 for the record )

Soo..... anything on the remote problem? If your TV is mounted higher than you are sitting like on a wall or shelf, it's important that the bottom edge of the TV isn't obstructed (like a shelf edge, etc). Just checking because I don't know if you saw my previous post about your remote problem.

Hmmm.... my remote operation is very instant and responsive. Perhaps there is a problem with either the remote sensor on the TV or the remote itself.

I've always had sluggish remote operation on my 4 yr old Mitsubishi . I have a learning remote and it works much better than the original factory remote. IR emitters on remotes can vary in output.

Here's a way of checking. If you have a video camera and several other remotes, have someone 10 -15 feet away aim each remote at the camera while you view the Vid Cam monitor screen. The IR emitter will show up white on the cam monitor. Look to see if the light signal looks weaker or off angle from the LG remote than other remotes you have.

Found this baby today:

http://www.amazon.com/EcoStrip-1503E...sr=1-1-catcorr

Plug your bias lighting into it, the other end into the USB port, when the TV turns off it cuts power to the strip so the lighting turns off as well, love it
post #681 of 5047
Got my 520 in, settled on it seeing as the 550's net capabilities is worthless to me, the tv is being used mainly as a pc monitor anyway, and the cheaper price did me in. Neither had enough component outputs so I figure a decent switch down the line is better so I never have to worry about components(more than 1) again.

A question though. There seems to be a tiny bit of blackness, only like a quarter inch, between the picture and the bezel. Is that normal? I'm getting it on my ps3 too so I'm guessing it's not a problem with the output on my pc.

this is a good idea, and would work well for me so my xbox360 wasn't sucking power just sitting there.

just don't put your cable box on this strip. you would lose your tv guide and dvr recording.

Sorry it took so long to get back. I went into best buy with it and just asked them to swap out the remote. I handed it to the theater expert and he used it to turn off the display model of my tv and then he handed back to me and said that I was going to have to bring in my tv because the ir sensor was bad and the remote was working just fine. I told him to go get a new remote and I would show him the difference, we went back and forth for a while but he went back and got a different remote. I took my old remote and pointed it at the display and went into the menus and sure enough the directional pad wouldn't respond, I then used the new one and it worked just fine so I tossed the old one on the counter took the new one and said thanks for your help. It was my victorious moment for the week

i had the same problem with my 520 with my computer only, i had to go in and change the overscan/underscan issue in the control panel and the ccc, but i only had it happen with my pc and nothing else.

There you go. The guys at Best Buy sometimes are so sure they know more than a customer it is really irritating. Why bring in and exchange the whole TV when it could just be the remote ?

Score *1* for customer assertiveness *0* for less than desirable BB associate response.

Already went through the CCC and fixed that, it does that for every new display device, but there is still a tiny bit of black and like I said I see it on my ps3 as well.

Been a while since I posted, so go easy on me...

Looking to upgrade from a 43" Sammy DLP. Have read good things about the LG xxLDxx line as well as the Samsung xxLNxx. I have been particularly intrigued by the specs on the 47LD650, but it's not available locally. Reviews on Costco's and Amazon's websites are glowing. But I have read in a few threads on AVS about "blooming" and lack of lighting uniformity on these models. Equally disconcerting for me, several reviewers have mentioned difficulty dialing in a decent picture when watching sports; they described a picture that looks blurry, especially from distance shots (like from the overhead).

I watch a lot movies and network tv as well as football. Wondering if anyone can speak to whether this is a chronic "issue" or is resolvable. Since I would be buying online, there's a bit more risk involved for me and I want to do my due diligence.

Any help would be appreciated.

I bought LG 32LD550 TV last week, and few days ago i noticed that when i watch movies on TV via PC(RGB and HDMI) movie is lagging every 10 sec...This is so annoying...

This happens when watching all kind of movie format( .avi, .mkv)...
I set resolution to 1920x1080 60Hz, and PC mode...

Today i try to connect the same PC that was on LD550 on my old 42" 50Hz LG TV and with this TV there is no lag!!

Any solution?

Please help!

I'm curious if anyone has compared viewing angles of the different size 550's. I read a quick review on the 55" in which it stated the viewing angles were so so(comparatively speaking?)...but I'm interested in a 42" for my bedroom and I was under the impression that it was an IPS panel. Is the 52" the only size that LG is sourcing that's not an IPS?
