Help me choose pls... Marantz SR600x or Onkyo TX-NR807

Budget is $500 to $600 dollars. At A4L, the Onkyo is $499 refurb / $599 new right now, and the SR6003/6004 are $499 and $599 refurb, respectively.

Associated gear: Oppo BDR, Dish HD-DVR, Logitech Squeezebox 3, xBox 360, Mitsubishi 720P DLP TV (plan is to upgrade to 1080P flat panel later this year), 5.1 speaker set up

I'm very concerned with all of the bad press the 6004 is getting due to the "POD", so I'm pretty sure that's off the list unless somebody can assure me the issue's been corrected.

I listen to music 75% of the time, and watch tv/movies 25% of the time, although that may shift a bit when I upgrade the TV and can unleash the full power of the Oppo. I want to use the video processors on the Oppo, and the DVR and xbox both will be connected via HDMI, so I don't think video processing capability is a major concern. (I'm assuming that all of these receivers can pass the video through from the source to the TV via HDMI without "molesting" it. Please let me know if that's *not* the case).

My preliminary conclusion is to go with the SR6003, because of Marantz's reputation for stellar sound, and the quality issues on the 6004. But after perusing this board for a couple of weeks, I'm even more confused about current AVR's then when I started, so I thought I'd throw this out there and try to get a little reassurance before I pull the trigger. Any thoughts, opinions, or comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

PS - I do not plan to go with 3D capability on the new TV, so that is not on my radar at all

If you don't try them both out, there's no point of us telling you what to buy. You have to get what one sounds best to you, not what we like better.

Recommend you consider the Pioneer 1120 instead

Winston,

Why do you recommend the Pioneer over the others? One thing that concerns me is that it doesn't have Audessey calibration. The consensus seems to be that the in-house developed calibration systems aren't as good. I forgot to include it in my original post, but excellent auto-cal is an important feature for me.

Other than foregoing some bass callibration, I find MCACC equally as effective as Audyssey MultiEq. I think you'll read that most folks will admit they are equally effective at the end of the day

What's lacking in the bass calibration? I've always heard that it's the most important part of a system's calibration, since the lower registers are the most room dependent. Do you have the 1120? I saw that you were the one that started the thread on the POD issue, so I can understand if that has left a bad taste in your mouth for Marantz in general.
