My HGS-12 may need an upgrade. Please Advise.

Hi folks. So I've had an HGS-12 for about 10 years now. I bought it (blemished) here in NYC. When I had it at my previous house, I was completely impressed. When I moved to my current house, I think I remained completely impressed. However, after this weekend, I now question my judgement:

There's been a little bit of a rattling on low passages. I always thought it was the fixtures being it's in the basement with a lot of paneling. Then I watched 'Where the Wild Things Are' on blu-ray with the kids, I kept noticing the rattle was more consistent. I thought "gee, there must be a lot of low passages in the movie". So I investigated further by sitting next to it and realized it was the woofer that was rattling. Now I'm thinking it's been the woofer all this time. And it's not all the time. It's with certain 'sounds'. Like the scene in The Incredibles DVD. The scene where he throws the round vehicle onto the night guards.

So after some further changes, I deduced that the only way to keep the rattling under control is to bring the volume down on the sub but then I ask, what's the point? I no longer get that kick anymore.

So now I have 2 questions: Has anyone heard anything like this? Is this common?

And is it time to upgrade to a newer sub? I've just been reading the last 30 minutes and have seen makers like SVS, HSU, Elemental Design, Rythmik, Epik Empire, Craigsub.... All these names I've never heard of 10 years ago. Is it time to take the plunge?

If so, I'd like to stick around $500 but being I paid $1k+ for the velo, I guess if it blows the velo away, I'd spend about $800-$900 or so.
Room dimensionos: W-20'xL-13'xH-6.5'
movie to music ratio: 80 / 20
Current Speakers: Monitor Audio Silver i series (not sure if this info matters)
I'd like to stick to the same size or less as the velo. If bigger, I guess I can accomdate somehow.

Please help...

You might want to post this in the Velodyne Support Thread:

You got some good years from the HGS 12, but by todays standarads it is best suited for a small room.

As far as a new sub Rythmik is a favorite for ultra-clean sound quality with its servo.

Did just that. Thanks!

I also added additional info for recommendations as the sticky thread above suggested.

The HSU VTF-2 MK3 is a very good sub and is currently on sale for $509 plus shipping. HSU is widely respected for sound quality with music, and they do well for HT use as well.

Overall, a very good, well balanced sub that should meet your needs, (unless you are stuck with having to use a small form factor sub like the HGS-12).

LOL... I never thought the HGS-12 to be a small form factor. There must be monster subs out there. Thanks for the link. I will read up on it later this evening. I've already read from another thread of someone having a rattling sound on their sub (non-velo) and they're hinting to a possible damaged driver. So suggestions for new subs like this is very welcome!

Yes, one of the newest best performing subs for its price, ~$1375, the CS (craigsub) 18.2, is 20 X 20 X 40 inches high.

I saw that. Thank you. I will rush home tonight to see if I can get there by 6pm EST to make that call. Afterall, there's been no complaints other than the rattling...
