Just picked up the new Insignia NS-BRDVD4 from Best Buy - Page 2

Thanks for the prompt response Ohio.

Someone brought my attention to this entry about the player in Canada:

Quote:

It is region switching! Leave the tray open press the home/setup button and then enter the code 9113 and a sub menu "configure player" pops up on the left. from there you can change the regions for DVD and BD. But once you power it off, it resets it's self. enjoy people! Update the firmware and it will do Netflix. I have a Netflix account but no connection to the player to test it out.

Has anyone tried this out? I suspect it won't work in the USA the NS-BRDVD3 wasn't hackable but it's probably worth a try

The (Eject the tray, press Setup, then 9113) code actually works on a NS-BRDVD3 with the firmware Best Buy mailed out over the summer that added Cinema Now and Pandora. I confirmed it last night, and my player was bought new from Best Buy USA last year when they were on sale.

But is the insignia ns-brdvd4 (US) hackable? I know the insignia ns-brdvd4-CA (Canada) has the remote hack...

I did not know that. I already own an NS-BRDVD3. Will it work if I just run the latest net update?

Hrm.

So the trey open-setup-9113 code does indeed open a menu on the NS-BRDVD3 (the previous model KFelon mentioned, and the US version, not Canadian). Unfortunately, regardless of what I settings I choose, the player will only play region 1. (I tried setting it directly to the other discs' specific region (2) as well as setting the player region-free.)

Later...

I read there's been an update released this month that has upgraded the Netflix app to a more Roku like level, including Search capability. Have you installed the latest firmware update? Could you tell us more about how the NF UI looks, feels, whether it works smoothly or not, better or not? Wash the dishes? Park the car? Pictures of how it looks?

Like last year with the BRDVD3s, there's a ton of these (this soon!) at the Dealtree ebay stores.

I have a friend who received this player as a gift, but a direct Ethernet connection is not an option. Has anyone successfully connected this model using a wireless adapter or wireless bridge? I'm trying to avoid her having to spend a lot of money (powerline adapters are way too costly, she could buy a WIFI equipped player for that).
Any one will work fine. I use several refurb linksys wrt160n routers ($30) running dd-wrt firmware to convert to bridge mode with all my players, including insignia. Most any linksys router will work. Bridges that cheap are hard to find.

I can't speak to the NS-BRDVD3, but I just bought a NS-BRDVD4, and it is noisier than hell on a Blu-ray disk. All kinds of clicking and whirring until the movie actually starts playing. If I didn't have it in a closed glass cabinet, I'd be returning it. Pretty picture though.

I received this as a Christmas present and also would like to connect it via WiFi. Anyone else use either an adapter or bridge to do this? Which one would work best as I'm looking for a cheap solution.

Thanks!

Mine is noisy as all hell also. Also takes quite a long time to load a Blu-Ray disk. I even updated the firmware right out of the box.

It is hackable with the Setup-9-1-1-3 trick
Hack shows as another entry in the Start menu : "Configure player"
Option will be available as long as player is plugged to the wall. If disconnected, just run the hack again.
I confirmed it with true Region B locked BDs and Region 2 PAL DVDs I have.
Will convert 50Hz material to 60Hz even if display is capable to accepting native 50hz material ( confirmed with my 2 LCDs)

I picked up this player last night, it's on sale for $89.99.
The "Eject + Setup + 9-1-1-3" trick works. Both Region B blu-rays and Region 2 dvds works!

Sounds like this would be a great option for importing UK TV on BD.

Does anyone know if it supports DLNA streaming?

Does NS-BRDVD4 support avchd disc?
mp3 on usb ?
Thanks
I also picked this up today and tried the region free jack. I can confirm that it works on the Insignia NS-BRDVD4 (Canada).

I'm having trouble getting this to play the HD formats though. It is not showing up on my Yamaha RX-V665. I have the receiver set to straight and that's what it is displaying right now. I set the audio settings on the blu-ray player to bitstream HD and still couldn't get it.

Do not update firmware if you are using for multi regions.

The new February 2011 firmware for the NS-WBRDVD2 disables the Configure Player remote hack.

Yes. Every blu-ray player supports AVCHD and MP3. You can also confirm by looking in the manual.

Thanks for the response but have you played an avchd disc in yours?
I searched the manual for "avchd" and there weren't any references to it.

My apologies. There isn't a word about it in the manual. I have played AVCHD DVD's in my NS-BRDVD3 and several other brands over the years. Since the BRDVD3 and 4 are very similar, and I've never seen a player that wouldn't play AVCHD, I'm 99% certain the BRDVD4 will play them. Since you hadn't gotten any response, I thought I'd throw that out there. You should be able to get confirmation in the insignia forum.

EDIT: There are posts over there which mention AVCHD playback on the BRDVD4, so it will indeed play them.

Hi there. I just purchased an Insignia BRDVD4 Blu-Ray player from Cowboom. It seems to work fine and I was able to switch it to Region-Free using the "Eject + Setup + 9-1-1-3" process.

I have the BRDVD4 connected to the Internet so I can use the Netflix streaming feature; every time I power it up, I'm prompted for a firmware update.

From reading this thread I know that the February firmware update [Version 27] will disable the Region-Free process. My player is currently on Version 9. Does anyone know what the most recent firmware version is that still keeps the Region-Free ability?

Thanks!

The Dec 2010 firmware keeps the region change feature and adds another profile option, Profile 5

it's under Previous update

Indeed it does - thank you!

I also have a region-free Insignia BRDVD3, currently running firmware version 29. I have heard that the current firmware for the BRDVD3 [version 34, January 2011] has the new Netflix search capabilities that my BRDVD4 now has, but that the version 34 firmware removes the region-free capabilities.

Same question as before: what is the latest firmware for the BRDVD3 that retains region-free capabilities?

Thanks!

Does anyone else have problems with this player's ability to play recorded DVDs (DVD-R, DVD-R/W, etc.)? I had a friend transfer some old VHS material onto DVD and it would freeze and single-frame advance along with audio drop-outs.

Never had this problem with my Oppo 970.
I'm able to play videos from flash drives connected to the USB port on my NS-BRDVD4, but the player didn't recognize my external hard drive when connected to the USB port.

Has anyone had success connecting an external hard drive to this player and getting it to recognize the drive and play videos from it? How did you have it configured, etc?

Thanks much for any info.

Yes. Must be FAT32, and it helps if it's externally powered. Can't read files > 4GB.
