Small, musical, budget friendly subwoofer

Just looking to complete a 2.1 system to play from my computer for music. I listen mostly to classical but also like rock, pop, alternative too. I already have Polk RTi4's so just need a complementary subwoofer. Looking for a musical sub with tight bass for a small room. Don't really need to shake the house or anything. Would like it to be compact if possible, but not absolutely necessary. I'm thinking an 8" sub with a budget of $100-$200 would fit the bill. I was looking at maybe a used Polk PSW111 or find a Velodyne sub off of craigslist, but I wanted to see if anyone had better suggestions. Thanks.

How are you defining musical? If you mean the subwoofer should be capable of articulating the lower octives of musical instruments and sound natural while doing that task....If you require the sub to output a SPL that is at the very least natural sounding, then the least expensive subs that can pull off that assignment run between $800 and $1200. The low end of that price range is usually internet direct subs that eliminate middleman cost. If you are willing to give up some musical articulation performance and accept a sub that can properly decipher movie passages well, The Emotiva Ultra Series 10 Subwoofer is on sale for $289.00 and free shipping. After that, there all just boom boxes so it really wouldn't make much of a difference which one you buy...you won't like how it sounds with music or movies.

I was hoping that wasn't the case. In general as far as musical sub, something that give warm sounding bass without distortion or boom. Like I said I listen to a lot of classical music so if I'm listening to, say, Bach's Cello suites, the tones don't sound any less than the highs. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I definitely don't want a boomy, muddy mess for a subwoofer. I'm not looking for extremely low, loud, gut-punching movie sub as I will not be using this sub for movies at all. I was hoping that there would be something reasonable that still delivered decent, quality, musical sound.

Although it is slightly out of your budget, the Emotiva Ultra SUB10 is your best choice. Its small and it has alot of output. It is very musical and has no boom at all... Its the best you can get for (music) the price and is no slouch for movies either..
