PS3 3D Blu-ray Update Delayed Until October

Ouch. Here's hoping they're delaying it so they can add checkerboard support...

Ugh, Sony and their delays. I thought I was pissed about Microsoft upping the cost of LIVE, this just took the cookie. Mainly because Sony is so good at delays. They delay everything. I would go looking for a job with them as I am sure that even the hours you work are delayed, and you can be delayed showing up on time (if at all), but the delay for being hired, they'd have to hire my great great grandchildren.

Screw em, I might just get a Panny 300.

And the odds of them making checkerboard available are less than zero imo.

Sony has delayed their HDMI 1.4 ES receivers into October also.

Since I had anticipated the September 12 firmware update I have been on the fence about how compulsive I was to purchase the Pani 350 a month ago. Now I'm glad I did.

The Sony Style store folks had told me some new 3D BD were going to be announced with the firmware update. I guess that will be delayed as well.

It's not like it matters. There's nothing available on Blu-Ray 3D anyway.

To the people that couldn't wait and bought an expensive player: Is this all to be able to play one or two discs?

Well... Ice Age 3, Coraline, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Monsters vs Aliens... In a week Monster House comes out in 3D.

Also believe the Grand Canyon IMAX movie is availble in 3D from Germany.

No word of checkerboard? But since the game update was not, I would not expect it to be.

The game update in early June does support checkerboard output for those games designed for 3D.
AFAIK the October update for the playing of 3D BR disk will not support Checkerboard.

I do not believe the PS3 game update supports checkerboard. Most DLP sets need 1080p for checkerboard and Sony announced all their 3D games will be in 720p. Also I have tried PS3 3D demo games with my Samsung DLP sets and the Sony will not recognize it as a valid 3D set.

The Avatar game is an exception since it has checkerboard encoded into its software (it also is 1080p). I have this game and it works in 3d an my Samsung.

As far as you knew, the October update was also coming out in September... until about 4 days ago. The truth is no one knows or will know until the update comes out. Maybe the sub $250 Panny DMP-BDT100 made Sony think twice about screwing over the checkerboard crowd, maybe their new 1.4 receivers hit a production delay... nothing to do but wait and see.

P.S. - Do the right thing Sony. You're better than this.

If you have the June PS3 3D update have you tried any of the games or demo available at PSN?

Sorry - I wasn't trying to imply that the PS3 3d functionality currently supports checkerboard in anyway (or take a cheap shot at you in general), I was just trying to make my point that with Sony you never really know until the firmware is available. I understand that none of the 3d games introduced in June support checkerboard and I'm not holding my breath for many future games to support the format either due to the resolution issue => 720p vs the required 1080p. I do however see them introducing Blu-ray checkerboard support as they will be directly losing market share to the Panny Blu-ray players with the new BDT100 now costing less than the PS3. But like I said, no one will know until the firmware is out.

I wouldn't put too much (really any) hope that the PS3 3D BD upgrade will support Checkerboard. Sony never sold 3D ready DLP RPTVs. And, the specs for 3D BD, as set by the BDA, support frame sequential (frame packed) 3D only.

First and foremost, the PS3 is a game console. Something 3D BD players (or even 2D BD players) can't offer.

If Samsung doesn't offer CB as a 3D output format from their 3D BD players (and they did sell 3D ready DLP RPTVs) why do you believe Sony will? Do any of their SAL 3D BD players support CB? AFAIK, none of them do.

Not trying to be a smart a$$ because all you say is true, but then why did panny offer Checkerboard? All that you said about sony(Sony never sold 3D ready DLP RPTVs) is true about panny. They must see some value $ in it or panny wouldent have gone to the trouble of doing it. Why samsung left us high and dry is beyond me. All I know is I have bought my last samsung TV.

I believe Panasonic included checkerboard output on their 3D BD players because they set out to build the most backwards compatible 3D BD players possible. Their BDT 300 and 350 players were the first to offer a 1.3 HDMI audio only output in addition to a 1.4 HDMI output.

Neither Samsung nor Sony had that in mind (backwards compatability). Samsung has added the 1.3 HDMI output on their new player(s) but still no CB output. Sony players have neither (AFAIK).

Lee,
I am not sure I understand what additional functions you are referring to that the other players do not have. Any device with an HDMI 1.4 transmitter chip can output HDMI 1.3 formatted content.

GOOD NEWS!!!

From Sony's PS3 blog...

Hi everyone, I wanted to share some news out of Tokyo Game Show. We’ve announced that the PS3 system will be able to play back 3D content on Blu-ray 3D discs with the next system software update (v.3.50), slated for release on September 21. We know that many consumers have purchased 3D TVs already and more of you will be purchasing them as the holidays approach – so we’re excited to offer this firmware update that makes all 38 million PS3s worldwide compatible with Blu-ray 3D discs.

I am glad, but also believe somebody at Sony needs to be fired, and information within the company especially people speaking to the press need to know WHAT they are talking about before they speak. First it's September, then it was announced it would be October, and it's now September again. This makes me happy, but it also adds to my already lack of confidence in the integrity of what they tell the press. I half expect them to come and say "Sorry, we meant November 21... In the year 2095!" >.>
