Panasonic TC-L32C22 - minor flaws

There is no official thread, so I'll just throw in my two cents. Won't comment on PQ - fine with me. For those ehh... not IT-oriented ;-) - keep in mind that 720p TV is ALREADY more than a regular DVD can output, so don't expect picture to look better than on properly working CRT TV. If you play HD DVD or Blueray - oh yes, this will be a boost.

Back to grumbling:
1) What idiot designed built-in speakers firing down and back? Yes, they are facing down - to the desk, and not towards you - but towards the wall behind the TV. Almost down, with few degrees angle up towards the rear wall. I reduced the Bass and increased the Tremble, but it is still echoing sometimes like in a shoebox. And this is a TV that cost almost $500 a few moths ago, from such a reputable brand as Panasonic?

2) A lot of lag when switching inputs via designated button on remote or on TV set. If you have to go 5 clicks to change from TV input to PC input, you go - click... wait 2 seconds ... - click again, and so on - 5 times. If you click quickly like you used to, only the first click will register. OTH, if you enter the Inputs menu and scroll Up/Down via navigation keys, you can click as fast you wish, there is no lag (when you stop scrolling, the will be a lag before the chosen input kicks in, but this is less annoying).

Both drawbacks are not enough to replace the TV with another one - I'm convinced this is a good 32" model for the price ($400 currently), just to let you guys know of these features that nobody wrote about.

FYI, you can select the input by pressing the Input button on the remote and then the corresponding number on the keypad. Switching from HDMI1 to PC requires two keypresses: Input, 7.

My gripe with this set is the inability to disable overscan over HDMI. Reading the manual before I bought it, I saw the "Just" aspect ratio and assumed this was the "Just Scan" or "1:1" mode, but unfortunately it isn't. Higher-end Panasonics have an "HD Size" setting that can disable overscan, but this one is missing that option. If anyone knows of a way to disable overscan on the TC-L32C22, I'd love to hear it. Any tricks like with some Samsungs where you can rename the HDMI input to PC to disable overscan? Any service menu settings?

Justed picked one up at BB as it went on sale today. To my surprise I like it so far more than the Samsung LN32540 from Sam's.

As to be expected, the Sammy's black level and shadow detail performance are tough to beat. However, not having any equipment, I was not able to eyeball the white balance settings correctly, and consequently colors looked like they needed professional calibration. On the other hand, the Panasonic's color accuracy seems spot on right out of the box. In addition to the usual setting changes needed to squelch store torch mode, I did temporarily drop the color down to 40 until I get a chance to set it properly.

I always find it interesting to experiment with fellow owner's settings. Any happy owner's?

I just brought this TV Home from Best Buy also. I thought $299 was a steal! I have not even opened the box. I am pretty much a Novice and do not want to dive into any service menu settings.

Do you (or anyone) mind sharing the usual setting changes that you thought worked best for this TV?

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I haven't seen anything to natively disable the overscan, but you can do some overscan compensation within Ubuntu.

I too picked one of these up today. I got mine at HH Gregg for $249 open box. I went to Best Buy to look at this TV and couldn't justify spending the money on another TV.

I just happened to go over to HH Gregg which is in the same parking lot because they always have a lot of open box stuff and this TV was sitting on their table open box with all accessories. The manager walks by and says I'll sell you that TV for $299. I replied that Best Buy has it on sale for $299 in the box. He said that it wasn't the same model, so I left.

I walked out and looked at the Best Buy ad and it was the same model. I went back in and found the manager and showed him the ad. I offered $249 and he said fine.

I brought it home and was truly pleased with the picture quality. I don't hear the "shoebox" echo that was in a previous reply. This was definately a step up from the Sceptre 32" (though I do love the Sceptre and its going in the play room, only has 1 HDMI) that it is replacing. The 2 HDMI inputs is nice along with a VGA input.

My only gripe with the TV is the lack of EPG, which I do understand because most people now either have a cable box or sat dish which has its own program guide. I only have OTA antenna in our bedroom.

In general, if you watch your TV with low ambient light you need to turn the Backlight down considerably - also, I calibrated the Brightness to 60. Those changes gave me the biggest improvement. The rest of my settings were crude eyeball guestimates after playing around with it today. Using the "Custom" Picture mode, I have the following at the moment:

Backlight: 35
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 60
Color: 40
Tint: 0
Sharpness: 35

Color Temp: Normal
A.I. Picture: On
C.A.T.S.: Off
Video NR: Off

Thanks for sharing! This is a bedroom TV that we pretty much watch in the dark, so the low backlight should be good.

I also bought this TV, price matched the Best Buy ad at 6th Ave.

The speakers actually sound good, and the placement doesn't bother me.

There are a few qualms, though, mostly after watching The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray.

I don't know if it was the TV, because the ambient lighting feature is off, but the brightness in dark scenes seemed to be jumping up and down on its own. Most notable the penultimate scene in the film (Two-Face w/ Gordon).

A lot of noise in the background which I don't know how to fix.

Also, the actors have this creepy soap opera-like feeling in their movements on screen that is normally attributed to 120hz TVs, though this TV is only 60hz.

Still, I watch TV on it, play games and overall it is fantastic. Even my SD Wii games look good. The Viera Link feature allows me to control the PS3 with the TV remote (for Netflix Stream, DVDs).

Complaint #1 - Easily fixed with external speakers which everybody should have anyways.

Complaint #2 - Universal Programmable Remote. Everybody has one right? Not perfect but if u like everything else about this TV...

I just wanted to point out that I never had any issues with my remote, when navigating TV, the menus or using Viera Link. No lag.
