You've listened to music with boosted bass and various room modes for a long time and your preferences have been shaped by that. Give it some time, and let your mind recalibrate.

With those modifications, I have really enjoyed the setup for movies. Whether it is intended or not, there seems to be alot more "going on" with the surround speakers than what I had with my Denon 4800.
Last night, I listened to music for the first time. I was very much not impressed. It didn't sound good at all to me. It may not be the way it is supposed to sound, but I have always preferred the bass and treble bumped up. To my ears, the sound was very lifeless w/ Audyssey. I'm thinking that for music I want either Audyssey turned off (and thus use the bass and treble controls to get the sound I want) or use Manual EQ. I tried both, and they sounded alot better to me (not sure what "default" Manual EQ settings were being used because I didn't go in and configure them).
Is there a way to make the system change from Audyssey to OFF or Manual EQ based on the input? Or do I have to go into the Setup and modify this everytime I listen to music?
I also experimented switching between the Digital Coax input and the analog input (I wired both up) to my Rotel CD player and there was definitely a difference. I didn't spend long enough to determine which I like better (there was no clear winner), but there definitely was a more significant difference in sound than what I would have expected. I don't know if the difference is just the DACs in the Rotel versus the Denon or whether the 4311ci does something different to the sound w/ analog inputs (different EQ settings).
Just curious, I thought that you would need an additional 2-channel amp to run both Wides and Heights. I also have an external amp running the LCR speakers. If you aren't using a second amp, how do you have the Wides and Heights wired, and what is the selection under Amp Assign?
I ask because I just ordered a 2-channel amp and if I don't need it, I will return it. Thanks.

Personal Memory Plus (OM p71) will remember preferred settings by input/source, and "Auto Surround Mode=ON (OM p 100) also recalls modes per input. But something's not right. You shouldn't need to turn off Audyssey for good SQ with music! To clarify, you can indeed use the bass/treble controls along with Audyssey. But most folks use DynEQ instead, and when DynEQ is on, that disables bass/treble. Incidentally, for best SQ I always listen in native format (2 ch in Stereo Mode, MC in MC) without expansion or weird Denon SIM modes, DSX or whatever. BTW you can make custom settings to Stereo Mode (OM p99).
I find that when critically listening to good recordings at volume, they require little EQ tweaking at all. Often at lower volumes I'll use DynEQ on Stereo recordings but with RLO=10. Given that the quality of recorded music varies, there are several ways to enhance poor recordings. You can use the Audyssey Flat curve to boost highs. You can use Restorer mode 3 HQ (OM p92).

No you don't need it. You just go to amp assign, set it to 11 ch, and then set the extenal amp to fronts instead of heights. You should be good to go.

AJ, if you have an ext amp for LCR you don't need any more amps!! There's 9 amps inside, dude!
edit: NetViper answered with some details. BTW as this has been asked and answered several times it's summarized in the first post of the thread.
A pioneer system with mcacc and a Onkyo 886 pre. When I listen to music I almost always use Dolby PLII (Music or movie depending what sounds better). I don't listen that loud and I don't use dynamic eq.

If you listen at low levels, that is all the more reason to use Dynamic EQ. Are you saying you have tried DEQ and you don't like the sound?

I guess I misunderstood the Denon Amp Assign screen. When I select 11CH, I didn't realize that I could select either Height or Front for the External Amp. Testing for understanding, if I select Front, then both the Height and Wide connections are enabled, and the Front LR connections are disabled?
Now that I look at it, it makes sense. I won't have to re-arrange my equipment rack to make room for another amp, and I can return the 2-channel amp that I ordered. Thanks!
^AJ, don't feel bad. The night I got my first Denon, I got so baffled by the OM, I couldn't get it to play anything for about 3 hours! I'm glad you have it sorted out and it will be so much easier and cheaper.
Just leave the preout connections to your ext amp the way they are now. Connect Heights speaker wire to the AVR Heights speaker posts. Then OM p 64 walks you thru the Amp assign. Step 4 =11 ch, then Step 6 = Front (this reassigns the internal amps that used to be available to drive the Fronts to the Heights speaker posts). Run autosetup. Do that little DSX enable I mentioned to NetViper on OM p90 (set DSX set to ON-Height/Wide) and then hit the DSX button on the remote.
And if anyone wants a challenge after that, try getting DenonLink4 enabled!
Hi all, got my 4311 last week, I finally had a chance to post my results. BTW, YES, the 4311 is made in Japan. I am noticing the sound is quite bright too.
I have rf-82, rc-62 and rb-61 as surrounds. Tried 3 different dm-a409 mics, one from the 4311, one from 2112 and one from a 991. The results are pretty much the same. Attached are the graphs after running the 8 position using the dm-a409 that came with the 4311. I followed the audyssey how-to to the dot. Mic is on a tripod about 13 feet from the mains and center, about 10 feet from the surrounds.
I remember someone reported using the dm-a505z that came with the 4308 and got much better results (no boosted highs). Should I try borrowing the mic from someone with the 4308?
How did you generate and view those graphs? Is that something the 4311 can do on its own hooked to the display, or do you need a third-party product or computer connected to the 4311?

No, don't feel bad at all. Denon's own customer service reps don't understand how this AMP works. They told me flat out that I cannot run the receiver the way I am doing it. Dummies.
Well looks like I'm going to call j&r tomorrow and pick up a 4311 to replace my rx3010. I need audyssey as my Yamaha isn't bringing it with its dsp functions. Any idea what firmware I can expect to receive with this coming from jr?

They're right in there (after you run Autosetup) right here:
Menu->Auto Setup->Parameter Check->EQ Check
You pick Audyssey to see the Std curve, Flat for the curve with no HF rolloff. These are only very rough approximations.

Does J&R currently have the best price on this in terms of authorized dealers? I'm strongly thinking about making the switch from Pioneer.
I've have my 4311 for about 3 weeks now and it's been flawless, until tonight.
My wife was watching DirecTv via HDMI on the main zone. I was listening to music via an Airport Express connected by optical on zone 2. She finished watched tv and shut it off (with a harmony remote). But the 4311 was smart enough to turn the main zone off and keep the music playing in zone 2. How cool! But when I shut the music off and turned the DirecTv back on, there was no OSD overlay at all. I switched to Blu-ray to see if it was only this HDMI input, but still no OSD. Hmmm. I haven't shut down the receiver off yet because there's some good football on right now. Searching the threads, it looks like over a year ago there were some issues that were later fixed with a firmware update.

Generally AV Science, Electronics Expo and J&R are some of the authorized resellers that provide nice discounts. Give them all a "call" to see which one has the best deal going.

What firmware version is loaded depends on when it was mfr'd ... although you'll want to check for an update when you connect it to your network.

Any ideas?
There are individual power on/off controls for each zone. Check the Video Convert setting didn't somehow get set to OFF. Otherwise, try a soft reset (power off for a few minutes after the football game).
I was streaming music via AirPlay and it sounds fine in Stereo but if I switch to PLII Music the subwoofer output stops. Any suggestions on what settings to change?
My avr-a100 has been unplugged for a couple
of months.
When hooked it up yesterday there were no sound
just picture on both HDMI input 1&2 that
